The year I went to college was a very difficult transition(过渡期) for me. 21 is probably true with many people. I got quite homework and 22 thought about going home.
Although the 23 time for many students is getting 24 from home, my mailbox was frequently 25 . One day when I went to the mailbox, there was a postcard 26 out at me. I sat down to read it, 27 a note from someone back home. 28 I became increasingly puzzled(困惑) as 29 postcards were like this; It was a full news report about a woman named Mabel and her newborn baby. I took the card back to my room and 30 about it.
Several days later I 31 another postcard, this one 32 news about Maybelline, Mabel’s cousin. Soon after, another card arrived and then another, 33 full of news of different people. I befan to 34 look forward to the next one, 35 to see what this author would come up with 36 . I was never 37 .
Finally, the cards 38 coming, right about the time I had begun to feel 39 about college life. They had been such a happy distraction(调剂) that I have 40 all the postcards and still bring them out to read whenever I need a lift.

My parents had always prepared for hurricanes. It is what people do in Florida because “you never know”. For us, that awhite metal cabinet (储藏柜) in our utility room (杂用间)filled with cans of food. We could eat anything out of the cabinet because “you never know” when a hurricane will come.
As a kid, I was about the white cabinet. I thought it was kind of strange to have food in the utility room. But, one look from my mother me from opening the door to glance inside.
One year, Channel 4 reported that Hurricane Dora was for the northern part of Florida. Soon the storm got and the wind blew. Then, the tall pine trees started to sway. And, “sway”, I meant “fall over or crash down on anything in their way”. We were lucky, as the went other directions and didn’t take our power out.
However, when my mother started cooking, the power was out. I calculated it was time to crack open that white cabinet. But, Dad thought it was time to up the charcoal grill(烧烤架 ) outside where it was raining and windy. To this day, I never a man’s love for his grill.
Our power came back for a while. So, my mother began cooking everything she could and it away, to the neighbors, to friends without power, to anyone with . I was hoping that the fried chicken was going to find its way to our . But, it didn’t. And, just as the last of the food was sent out and she began to work on our dinner, yes, we lost our . It was time for 20 minutes’ eggs on the grill.
Oh, the white metal cabinet. No. We never it. We weren’t “that bad off” as I understand it. And, for years I how bad off we would have to be to eat out of that cabinet. Perhaps it was just the of it, the thought that it was there watching our backs we wanted a can of beans or some potted meat. I don’t know if that was what was in there. Anyway, I never looked inside.

My wife and I moved into our home two years ago. We had a yard with a lot of .Very often when we have flowers, Denise or I would plant some between the rocks, just to add some to the area.
Last summer, I found a tiny little in the yard that I could not immediately identify. I knew I didn’t plant it and Denise said she didn’t either. We decided to let it growing until we could find out what it was.
Weeks passed and as I made my way back to the plant, it appeared to be a sunflower. I decided to the weeds around it. As I pulled rocks from the area to get to the weeds, I noticed something . The sunflower had not where I saw it begin. It actually had begun under a big and grown under and around it to reach the .
That’s when I that if a tiny little sunflower didn’t let a big rock stand in its of developing, we too have the ability of doing the same thing. If we ourselves like that little sunflower, we can reach where we to go and get what we need for growth.
We need to believe in ourselves knowing we have the to achieve our goals. Like the , it knew it had the ability to get over the rocks because it had in itself that it would succeed. Stand tall like the sunflower and be who and what we are, then the environment will begin to us. We will find a way to go under or any “rocks”in order to reach our goals.

In 1982, Steven Callahan was crossing the Atlantic alone in his sailboat when it struck something and sank.He got into a life boat, but his supplies were .His chances of surviving were small. when three fishermen found him 76 days later, he was alive —much than he was when he started, but alive.
His of how he survived is fascinating. His cleverness —how he to catch fish, how he evaporated(蒸发) sea water to fresh water—is very interesting.
But the thing that my eye was how he managed to keep himself going when all hope seemed lost, and there seemed no in continuing the struggle .He was starved and9 worn-out.Giving up would have seemed the only possible choice.
When people these kinds of circumstances, they do something with their minds that gives them the courage to keep going. Many people in desperate circumstances in or go mad.Something the survivors do with their thoughts helps them find the courage to carry on difficulties.
"I tell myself I can it," wrote Callahan in his book.-Compared to what others have been through, I'm fortunate.I tell myself these things over and over, up courage..."
I wrote that down after 1 read it.It me as something important. And I've told myself the same thing when my own goals seemed off or when my problems seemed too terrible. And every time I've said it, I have always come back to my .
The truth is, our circumstances are only bad to something better. But others have been through the much worse, that is, in comparison with what others have been through, you're fortunate.Tell this to yourself over and over again, and it will help you through the rough situations with a little more courage.
