As Christmas is coming, there are presents to be bought, cards to be sent, and rooms to be cleaned. Parents are __1__ with difficult jobs of hiding presents from curious young children. If the gifts are large, this is sometimes a real problem. On Christmas Eve, young children find the excitement almost unbearable. The wish for gifts usually proves stronger. But though children go to bed early, they often lie __3__ for a long time, hoping to get a short look at Father Christmas.
Last Christmas, my wife and I __4__ hid a few large presents in the storeroom. I fear the moment when my son, Jimmy, would ask me where that new bike had come from, but __5__ he did not see it.
On Christmas Eve, __6__ took the children hours to go to sleep. It must have been nearly midnight when my wife and I went quietly into their room and began __7__ stockings. Then I pushed in the bike I bought for Jimmy and left it beside the Christmas tree. We knew we would not get much sleep that night, for the children were sure to get up early. At about five o’clock the next morning, we were __8__ by loud sounds coming from the children’s room—they were shouting excitedly! __9__ I had time to get out of bed, young Jimmy came riding into the room on his new bike, and his sister, Mary, followed closed behind pushing her new baby carriage. Even the baby arrived. He moved on the hands and knees into the room dragging a large balloon behind him. Suddenly it burst. That woke us up __10__. The day had really begun with a band(巨响)!

I had not seen my parents for a long time. Last Saturday I drove a long way to visit them, 36 neither of them was at home. So I waited patiently at their home 37 their return. Not seeing them made me really 38 .

What took my breath away was seeing my dad’s emblems(徽章)from his military service of our country 43 he was young. My father never 44 to us about the Korean Wars. I am writing my story to 52 everyone who is fortunate to still have their parents 53 to invest some time to learn about them. I am grateful to have 54 of my parents. So I still have time to talk with them. I hope that readers will 55 from my story and find the time to talk about those things in their life that mean so much to their parents.

It was a busy morning, about 8:30, when an elderly gentleman in his 80s came to the hospital. I heard him saying to the nurse that he was in a hurry for all appointment(约会)at 9:30.
The nurse had him take a 31in the waiting area, 32 him it would be at least 40 minutes 33 someone would be able to see him. I saw him 34 his watch and decided, since I was 35 busy—my patient didn’t 36 at the appointed hour, I would examine his wound.
