A mosquito is an insect that is found all over the world. There are thousands of different kinds of mosquitoes in many different sizes and colors. The female mosquito needs blood from vertebrates (脊椎动物)to lay eggs and produce more mosquitoes. She has a special part of her mouth that she uses to suck blood, and her saliva(spit)thins the blood so she can drink it.In fact. It’s the mosquito’s saliva that makes the bites itch(痒)!
A person who gets bitten by a mosquito will notice a wheal, which is a bump around the bite.
The wheal will be round, with pink or red around the edge and white in the middle. The wheal will
itch a lot.Soon the wheal will disappear, but the itch will stay.
If you’ve been bitten by a mosquito, wash the bite with soap and water.Put on some calamine lotion to help stop the itching,or an adult can find an anti-itch cream at the drugstore for you.Placing an ice pack on the bite may also help.Tell an adult you’ve been bitten by a mosquito, especially if you live in the eastern United States. But if you develop an allergic reaction and feel dizzy or sick, tell a doctor immediately. He can treat allergic reactions with sole medicine.
The best way to avoid mosquito bites is to wear an insect repellent.Repellents that include one of these ingredients are best:BEET and lemon eucalyptus.Ask a parent to help you apply them.
Since mosquitoes lay their eggs in water,it’s also a good idea to empty out buckets, flower pots, toys and other things in your yard that may have collected water during a rainstorm. And when it’s possible, you’d better wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants to keep mosquitoes away from your skin.

Kenyon Scudder once told me a story about his friend, Michael. Michael happened to be on a train sitting next to a young man who seemed worried. Finally the young man told the friend that he was a convict (罪犯) returning home from a prison far away. What he did had brought shame (羞耻) on his family, and they had neither visited him nor written to him. He hoped, however, that this was only because they were too poor to travel and too busy to write.
When he was set free he had written to tell them he wanted to go home. To make matters easy for them, however, he had asked them to put up a signal (信号) for him when the train passed their little farm. If the family had forgiven (原谅) him, they were to put up a white ribbon (丝带) in the big apple tree near the railway. If they didn't want him back, they were to do nothing, and he would stay on the train, and go far away.
As the train neared his hometown his suspense became so great that he was afraid to look out of the window. He asked Michael to watch for the big apple tree. They changed seats. In a minute, Michael put his hand on the young convict’s shoulder. "There it is," he said, his eyes filled with sudden tears. "It’s all right. The whole tree is white with ribbons."For which of the following reasons might the young man be worried?

C.He was moved by the young man. |
D.There were many white ribbons on the apple tree。 |
"You can't be too rich or too thin." It's a sayingthat has stood the test of time. Still-certain thingshave changed.
Coined by socialite Babe Paley in the 1960s-thequote was popular at a time when working out waspracticed mainly by pro-athletes and it was only thegenetically blessed who managed to be really thin.
Today possessing the discipline to consume ahealthful diet and to stick to an effective exerciseprogram can mean more than having good genes. Ifyou include sessions with a personal trainer and take the right supplements - you'll be rewarded with evenmore success.
But sometimes stubborn pockets of fat just don'trespond well to diet and exercise. That's when manypeople seek plastic surgery(整形外科) if they canafford it.

Most of us spend our lives seeking the natural world. We go fishing, sit in the garden, have a picnic, live in the suburbs or go to the seaside. The most popular leisure activity in Britain is going for a walk. When joggers jog, they don’t run the streets. Every one of them tend to go to the park or the river.
But despite this, our children are growing up nature deprived(剥夺). I spent my boyhood climbing trees. These days, children are robbed of these ancient freedoms, due to problems like crime, traffic, the loss of the open spaces and strange new ideas about what is best for children, that is to say, things that can be bought, rather than things that can be found.
The truth is to be found elsewhere. A study in the US: families had moved to better housing and the children were assessed for ADHD—attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (多动症). Those whose accommodation had more natural views showed an improvement of 19%; those who had the same improvement in material surroundings but no nice view improved just 4%.
ADHD is one of the great problems of modern childhood. One study after another indicates that contact with nature gives huge benefits to ADHD children. However, we spend money on drugs rather than on green places.
The life of old people is measurably better when they have access to nature. The increasing concern for the growing population of old people is in quality rather than quantity of years. And study after study finds that a garden is the single most important thing in finding that quality. Even problems with crime and aggressive behaviour are reduced when there is contact with the natural world.
We need the wild world. It is essential to our well-being, our health and our happiness.
According to the author, people enjoy _______ to seek nature.
A.jogging on the street |
B.sitting in the garden |
C.shopping in the supermarket |
D.running in the gym |
From the second paragraph, we can see that _______.
A.adults deprive the children of their rights to approach nature |
B.climbing trees will certainly do good to the children |
C.children probably spend less time in nature nowadays |
D.children tend to be happier as a result of their material satisfaction |
In what way do people benefit from their contact with nature?
A.Children with ADHD can be cured. |
B.A garden nearby improves the quality of old people’s life. |
C.Problems with crime and violent behavior will easily be solved. |
D.Children’s performance at school is greatly improved. |
What is the main idea of this passage?
A. Access to nature improves our life.
B. Nature treats children with ADHD.
C. Getting close to nature reduces crime.
D. Man can’t live without natural areas.
