I’d meant to go to Miros that day. I’d packed my bag and was ready. The motor-boat__36__ in on time. The sky was cloudy, but the wind wasn’t too strong for the two-hour __37__. I stood at my window, staring at the boat. Then I lost __38__ of her, an old light-house partly blocked my view of the harbour. A dozen passengers were __39__ their way there. I was about to join them---when a man’s face __40__ at the light-house window.
This was strange, because the light-house had been empty, unused and __41__ for thirty years. It was stranger still---because I’d seen that __42__ before. I couldn’t place it but it was, or had once been, familiar to me. I opened my window and __43__ across.
“I know we’ve met before, but I can’t remember where.”
I __44__ him to open his if he could and answer me. He did neither. The face behind the glass __45__ motionless. Seeing him more clearly now, I knew he was not looking at me. He seemed to be looking upwards, __46__ the clouds. How well I’d known that face, sometime, somewhere!
I __47__ again. “We met years ago. Was it in Athens in the 1950s? I used to live in Plaka.”
He didn’t reply nor give any __48__ that he’d heard. I went back further, to __49__ I was in the navy.” Perhaps we met at sea during the war,” and that thought at once __50__ him to mind. Commander Leftis! He was Commander Leftis of course! How could I have forgotten? I’d saved his life once. But surely he…
The motor-boat __51__ her bell. I turned my eyes. The wind had risen, but she was pulling. __52__. Laughing, I called, “Now I’ve missed her, and it’s your __53__, Commander!’
As the boat drew away, the face at the window faded. __54__ minute it was there, looking up. I could see the whites of the eyes. The __55__ it was gone.
Well, I didn’t rush to the light-house. I knew that Leftis was dead. He died at sea in 1963 or ’64. But there’s one other thing I ought to tell you: the motor-boat never reached Miros. It was lost in a storm, with all the passengers.

A few weeks ago, our dog, which we had kept for more than ten years, had to be put down. First, a tumor on her stomach got worse, and she was very 36 . Then, the pain in her back got so bad that sometimes she 37 lie down in the middle of a walk and couldn't take another 38 .
When I first found out, l was very sad and cried a lot. She was more like a sister to me than a 39 .But I was also angry at my stepfather,Steve, who told us the 40a week after it happened. He 41 because he didn' t want to worry us, and he didn't want me to get depressed(抑郁的) and fail my exams. I just thought she was 42 at the animals' hospital.
I think you know all the 43 that went through my head: She was my dog!Why didn't he tell us earlier? I didn't even get to say goodbye.
People in my family have a 44 of keeping things from me to protect me, such as only telling me that my aunt had cancer 45 she had already improved health. All I could think was: Not again !
I 46 to my mum, and she said, “I know. I'm 47 , too.” I opened my mouth to shout. And then she added, “I'm so angry with Steve that he had to 48 through all this on his own.”Hearing my mum's words, I shut up my mouth. I had been so 49 on myself. I hadn't thought about 50 Steve was going through. That dog was his baby. He'd had her for longer than he'd had us—and he had to make the decision to 51 her life, and then kept in silence for an entire 52 . All my anger melted away, and all I felt was 53 .
It makes me realize that we focus so much on ourselves that we 54 the pain of others. At that moment, my mum's words were an incredible 55 that I'll never forget.

After the quake hit northeast Japan on March 11, many moving stories that I saw with my own eyes happened around me.
I had to walk home since all the 21 had stopped after the earthquake. On my way home I22 an old lady at a bakery shop who was giving out free bread, which made my heart 23 . A man was holding a sign that said, “Please use our24 .” He was25 his house for people to go to the restroom.
My friend wanted to 26 others. He stood in the cold with a sign “If you’re okay with a motorcycle, I will 27 you to your house.” And then I saw him take one gentleman home, all the way to a faraway place!
The next day I drove to 28 my car with gas. There is a lack (缺乏) of29 now and many gasoline stations are either closed or have very 30 lines. I got 31 , since I was behind 15 cars. Finally, when it was my32 , the man smiled and said, “ 33 this situation, we are only giving $30 worth gas per person. Is that all right?” “ 34 . I’m just glad that we are all able to 35 ,” I said. His smile gave me so much comfort.
I saw a man at the evacuation (疏散) center36 when people brought food to him. It was the first time in three days that food was brought to their center. However, after he wiped the tears, his next37 surprised me. “I am very38 that we are provided with food. But people in the city next to us haven’t 39 any food at all. Please go to that center as well.” And when hearing that, I realized there is a bright future on the other side of this 40 .

In this modern world, we rush around all day, doing things, talking, emailing, sending and reading messages. We are always on, always connected, always thinking, always talking. There is no 36
for stillness.
And when we are 37 to be still because we're in line for something, or waiting at a doctor's appointment, or on a bus or train, we often 38 something to do. Some will play with mobile devices, others will read something. Being still isn't something we're 39 .
This comes at a 40 : we lose that time for 41 , for observing and listening. We lose peace.
And 42 yet: sometimes too much action is worse than no action at all. You can run around crazily, but get 43 done.
Take a moment to think about 44 you spend your days. Are you constantly rushing around? Are you constantly reading and answering 45 , checking on the news and the latest stream of information? Are you always 46 through your schedule?
Is this how you want to spend your 47 ? If so, peace be with you. If not, take a moment to be 48 . Don't think about what you have to do, or what you've done already. 49 be in the moment.
Then after a minute or two of doing that, consider your life, and how you'd 50 it to be. See your life with less movement, less doing, less rushing. See it with more stillness, more consideration; more 51 . Then be that vision.
It's pretty simple: all you have to do is sit still for a little bit each day 52 you've gotten used to that, try doing less each day.Breathe when you feel yourself moving too 53 . Slow down. Be present. Find happiness now, in this moment, instead of 54 for it. 55 the stillness. It's a treasure, and it's available to us, always.

Mom had lived in a nursing home for the past three and a half years, suffering the increasing effects of dementia(老年痴呆). They were tough years, actually 21 for us family members than for her, I believe. She suffered very little __22__ in those final years, less than she __23__ when living in her own home. This was because other people took better care of her than she did herself.
All dementia is not alike. Mom’s form 24 her short-term memory more than her long-term memory. By the time she went to the nursing home, her short-term memory was _25__ non-existent. We learned to _26___ our conversations with her to old things of the past. Usually, she could connect with these __27__ and seem to enjoy us __28___ about them. I noticed in her last year that her long-term memory was __29___., too. And it became ever more __30_ to engage her. In her last six months, we had very little __31___ of her responding, though a few times she __32__us. So, when we called her, we would just __33___ to tell her about our lives, things we were doing, things our children and grandchildren were doing. The __34__ would be short. We would tell her we loved her; she would either be __35__ or make some grunting(咕哝) sounds.
__36__ I expected Mom’s death, it was still bad news to hear. She is __37___. Even one-way conversations were more __38__ than no conversations.
So now, all we have are __39__ and a few physical items that were hers or gifts from her. On Mother’s Day this year we will send no __40__, no gift, make no call. But we will remember her.

Mr. Glen is a millionaire. Years ago, after returning from abroad to his motherland, he 1 his company. Speaking of success, Glen often tells us a story about his extra expensive “school” fee. He always 2 his success to it.

The officers looked over everything carefully, and 15 him no matter what time of entry and exit he must accept the check and if16 reusing and carrying fake goods, he would be 17 by law! Suddenly, his face turned red, and he had nothing in mind after boardingthe plane for long.
