It was 4 o’clock in the morning on June 9, 2003 when I received the phone call. “This is the emergency room calling and your son was just  21  in with severe burns on his face, neck and arms. We have called for a(n)  22  and are going to fly him to the burn unit in Seattle.” Seattle was 350 miles from his college, so we knew immediately this was  23  .
The doctor described the  24  , which caused the burns. At 6 am, our son and his friends decided to barbecue hamburgers in the courtyard of their apartment. When they  25  the charcoal(木炭), it burst into flames because they had sprayed too much petrol. The flames  26  my son’s shirt tail and shot from his waist to well over his head.
27  , one of the boys was quick-minded, grasped my son, and  28  him on the grass. While it saved his life, it was not in  29  to save him from severe burns and the terrible scars.
After he  30  from the treatments, the doctors told him they would not do plastic surgery(整容) for 6 months  31  it takes that long for the skin to stop shrinking and wrinkling. So he had to return to college with scars typical of severe burns.
When I was a child, my mother told my sister, who had a 10-inch, very  32  scar on her arm, “Nancy, if you ignore the scar, other people will ignore it. It does not mean they will not  33  it, but it means it will not matter to them if it doesn’t matter to you.”
I  34  this wisdom on to my son. He kept my advice in  35  and returned to school with his head held high--glad he was alive.
By the end of the six-month waiting period, he decided that the scars didn’t  36  , so he made the  37  to give up any plastic surgery.
We all have “scars” that we believe  38  people to keep away from us. And we spend a lot of time thinking that if only we looked differently, or dressed differently, people would like us better.
But you see, people will only judge you by your looks, or your clothes, if you are judging yourself by these same  39  standards. Put your imperfections(缺点;瑕疵) out of your mind and concentrate on what you value  40  yourself, and your beauty will shine through.

The day I was given the news was a cold Saturday. My mom sat me on the floor and opened her mouth to give me the most words I'd ever heard: “Grandma Billie has been diagnosed with cancer.” Tears filled my eyes immediately. Mom continued, “Grandma is old and her body is too . There’s nothing they can do to treat her.” I knew this wasn't my mom’s fault but I was so . I was almost yelling at my mom, “So, they’re just going to let her ?”
We had to just wait for her to die. I couldn't even the thought. We went to the hospital right away. The doctor said, “Billie has a tumor in her . She won't be able to because it hurts her too much. One option is a feeding tube, but there are times when it will be uncomfortable.” At the end, the doctor sighed, “With a feeding tube, she would probably have three at most.”
My whole family on my mom’s side was really and they were all looking to God to make this easy. I couldn't handle it. If God was so wonderful and so then why did he allow all these awful things to happen to good people? Why was he letting my grandma die?
I came and visited every day after practice. Grandma would tell me the stories over and over again, but every time I was just as surprised and excited to hear them. She was getting really fast and every time I came to see her it broke my heart more.
3 weeks later, after the softball practice, I was getting ready to see grandma when mom appeared in the locker room. She opened her mouth but at first no words came out. She again, “You can’t go to see grandma today because she just died.” Silence. I couldn’t anyone else in the room. Mom sat next to me and we both held each other and cried.

Dear Malia and Sasha,
I know that you’ve both had a lot of these last two years on the campaign trail, going to picnics and parades and state fairs, eating all sorts of junk food your mother and I probably shouldn’t have let you have. But I also know that it hasn’t always been easy for you and Mom, and that even though you both are excited about that new puppy, it doesn’t for all the time we’ve been apart. I know I’ve missed these past two years, and today I want to tell you a little more about why I decided to take our family on this journey.
When I was a young man, I thought life was all about me—about how I’d my way in the world, become successful, and get the things I want. But then the two of you came into my with all your curiosity and mischief and those smiles that never to fill my heart and light up my day.
I want all our children to go to schools of their potential—schools that challenge them, inspire them, and instill (灌输) in them a sense of about the world around them. I want them to have the chance to go to college their parents aren’t rich. And I want them to get good jobs: jobs that pay well and give them benefits like health care, jobs that let them spend time with their own and retire with dignity.
I want us to the boundaries of discovery so that you’ll live to see new technologies and inventions that improve our lives and make our planet cleaner and safer. And I want us to push our own human boundaries to reach the divides of race and region, gender and religion that us from seeing the best in each other.
That was the your grandmother tried to teach me when I was your age, reading me the opening lines of the Declaration of Independence and telling me about the men and women who marched for because they believed those words put to paper two centuries ago should mean .
She helped me understand that America is great not because it is perfect but because it can always be made better and that the work of perfecting our union falls to each of us.It’s a charge we pass on to our children, coming closer with each new generation to we know America should be.
These are the things I want for you, to in a world with no limits on your dreams and no achievements beyond your reach. And I want every child to have the same chances to learn and dream and grow and thrive that you girls have. That’s why I’ve taken our family on this great adventure.
I am so proud of both of you. I love you you can ever know. And I am grateful every day for your patience, self-confidence, grace, and humor as we prepare to start our new life together in the White House.
