Children model themselves largely on their parents. They do so mainly through identification. Children identify 36a parent when they believe they have the qualities and feelings that are 37 of that parent. The things parents do and say---and the 38 they do and say to them--therefore strongly influence a child’s 39 . However, parents must consistently behave like the type of 40 they want their child to become.
A parent’s actions 41 affect the self-image that a child forms 42 identification. Children who see mainly positive qualities in their 43 will likely learn to see themselves in a positive way. Children who observe chiefly 44 qualities in their parents will have difficulty 45 positive qualities in themselves. Children may 46 their self-image, however, as they become increasingly 47 by peers groups standards before they reach 13.
Isolated(孤立的) events, 48 dramatic(突然的) ones, do not necessarily have a permanent 49 on a child’s behavior. Children interact such events according to their established attitudes and previous training. Children who know they are loved can, 50 , accept the divorce of their parents’ or a parent’s early 51 . But if children feel unloved, they may interpret such events 52a sign of rejection or punishment.
In the same way, all children are not influenced 53 by toys and games, reading matter, and television programs. 54in the case of a dramatic change in family relations, the 55 of an activity or experience depends on how the child interprets it.

Each of us fails from time to time. If we are wise, we accept these failures as a 36 part of
the learning process. But all too often as parents and teachers we disallow this 37 right to our
children.
When I see a child 38 to this kind of pressure, I think of Donnie.
Donnie was my youngest third grader. His
39 of failure kept him from classroom games
that other children enjoyed. He 40 answered questions—he might be wrong.
I tried my best to build his 41 .But nothing changed until midterm , when Mary Anne , a student teacher , was assigned(安排) to our classroom .

One morning , we were working on math problems at the chalkboard . Donnie had 43 the problems with pains-taking tidiness . Pleased with his progress , I 44 the children with Mary Anne and went for art materials . When I returned , Donnie was in 45 . He’d missed the third problem .
My student teacher looked at me in despair . Suddenly her face 46 . From the desk we shared , she got a container filled with pencils .
“Look , Donnie,” she said, kneeling beside him and gently 47 the tear-stained face from his arms . “I’ve got something to 48 you.” She removed the pencils , one at a time , and placed them on his desk .
“See these 49 , Donnie,” she continued . “They belong to Mrs . Lindstrom and me . See how the erasers are 50 ? That’s because we make mistakes too . But we erase the mistakes and try again . That’s what you 51 learn to do , too.”
She kissed him and stood up . “Here”, she said , I’ll leave one of these pencils on 52 desk so you’ll remember that everybody makes mistakes, 53 teachers.” Donnie looked up with love in his eyes and a smile .
The pencil became Donnie’s 54 possession . That, together with Mary Anne’s frequent encouragement, gradually 55 him that it’s all right to make mistakes—as long as you erase them and try again .

Blind from birth, I have never had the opportunity to see myself and have been completely dependent on the image I create in the eyes of others.
There are those who 36 that since I can’t see, I obviously also cannot 37 . Very often people will talk with me at the top of their lungs. Conversely to this, people will also often 38 , assuming that since my eyes don’t work, my ears don’t either. For example, when I go to the airport and ask the ticket agent for 39 to the plane, he or she will always pick up the phone and call a ground hostess in a very low voice. "Hi, Jane, wave got a 76 here." I have concluded that the word " 40 " is not used because they are unwilling to inform me of my condition of which I may not have been previously 41 .
On the other hand, others know that of course I can hear, but believe that I can’t talk. Once I became ill and was hospitalized. Immediately after I was 42 , I was wheeled down to the X-ray room. Just at the door sat an elderly woman(judging from her voice) asked the orderly(护工) who had been wheeling me:" What is your name?" “What’s your name?” the orderly 43 to me. "Harold Krents", I replied. "Harold Krents", he repeated. "When was he born?" "When were you born?"…This continued for about five minutes before I finally interrupted, "Look, this is absolutely 44 . OK, I can’t see, but it’s go to become pretty 45 to both of you that I don’t need an interpreter(翻译)." “He says he doesn’t need an interpreter," the orderly reported to the woman.
The 46 misconception of all is the view that because I cant see, I can’t 47 . I was turned down by over forty law firms, 48 my qualifications included a cum laude degree from Harvard Law School. The 49 to find jobs, the continuous 50 of being told that it was impossible for a blind person to 51 law, the rejection letter, not based on my lack of 52 but rather on my disability, will always remain one of the most upsetting experiences of my life.
53 , the Department of Labor issued laws that demand equal 54 opportunities for the disabled. The business community’s response has been 55 . The attitude towards the disabled is beginning to change.
