Growing up, I had a scar on my face — a perfect arrow in the center of my cheek, pointing at my left eye. I 36 it when I was three, long before I knew that scars were a 37 thing, especially for a girl. I only knew that my scar brought me 38 and tenderness and candy. As I got older, I began to take 39in my scar, in part to stop people laughing at me, but mainly as a reaction to the thought that I should feel uncomfortable. It’s true. I was 40 the first couple of times someone pointed at my 41 and asked, “What’s that?” or called me “Scarface.” But the more I heard how 42 my scar was, the more I found myself liking it.
When I turned fifteen, my parents — 43 the advice of a doctor — decided it was time to 44 on what was now a thick, shiny red scar.
“But I don’t mind the scar, really,” I told my father as he 45 that I would have the operation during my summer vacation. And my friends, along with my boyfriend at the time, 46 as I did, that my scar was 47 and almost pretty in its own way. After so many years, it was a 48 of me. But my father said it was a deformity (畸形). I don’t know what 49 more that day: hearing my father call my scar a deformity, 50 realizing that it didn’t 51 to him how I felt about it.
I did have the operation that summer.
In my late twenties, I took a long look at my scar, something I hadn’t done in years. 52, it could be seen in the right light, but no one 53 me about it anymore. As I leaned uneasily toward the mirror, I felt a sudden 54.
There was something powerful about my scar and the proud person I 55 because of it. I have never been quite so strong since they cut it out.

We lived in a very quiet neighborhood. One evening I heard a loud crash in the street. 36 that evening my wife had asked me to go to the store to get some soft drinks. It seemed like this would be a good time to let my teenage daughter Holly37 her driving, so I sent her to the store in my truck.
At dinner my son talked about how much he liked my 38 . I enjoyed having it, but I said: “Guy, my heart is not set on that truck. I like it but it is just metal and won’t last forever. Never set your heart on anything that won’t last.
After hearing the loud noise, the whole family ran outside. My son shouted: “ Dad! Dad, Holly crashed your truck.”
My heart sank and my mind was 39 with conflicting thoughts. Was anyone hurt? Who else was involved? As I ran to the door, I heard a voice in my heart say: “Here is a chance to show Holly 40 you really love. She’ll never forget it.”
The accident had occurred in my own driveway. Holly had crashed my truck into our other vehicle, the family van (搬运车). In her inexperience, she had41 _the brakes and the gas pedal. Holly was unhurt 42 but when I reached her, she was crying and saying:“Oh, Dad, I’m sorry. I know how much you love this truck.” I held her in my arms as she cried.
Later that week a friend stopped by and asked what had happened to my truck. I told her the whole story. Her eyes moistened(湿润) and she said: “That happened to me when I was a girl. I borrowed my dad’s car and 43a log that had fallen across the road. I ruined the car. When I got home my Dad knocked me to the ground and began to kick me.”
Over 40 years later, she still felt the pain of the night. It was a deep wound on her 44 .
I remember how sad Holly was the night she crashed our truck, and how I comforted her. One day, when Holly 45 on her life, I want her to know that I love her a thousand times more than any piece of 46 .

I never thought about the dangers of growing up during the war because I was only six then. My parents were 36 and both were busy with their work at a hospital. I was often left in the care of my grandmother. Grandma gave Aunt Tracy and I the 37 of taking lunch to my grandfather, her estranged (
分居的) husband, who lived 38 in an apartment at the other side of the village.
As usual, 39 we left, Grandma repeated, "There may be war at any time, so stay on the side of the road. Be 40 not to spill (
溢出) the food." Aunt Tracy and I 41 the lunch box and hurried to Grandpa’s place.
"Keep down and take cover!" Tracy cried out as we heard some 42 . As we squatted (
蹲) at the roadside, I started to feel 43 . Grandpa preferred his food served 44 . If we couldn’t get there on time, his lunch would turn cold! Not wanting the war to slow us down, I said, "Let’s just run for it!"
We tried all the ways we could think of to cross the road, but 45 seemed to work. Suddenly Tracy said, "Bullets travel in a straight line, so we can run in a zigzag (
之字形)."Taking a deep breath, we set off again and ran wildly back and forth across the road., 46 we managed to reach Grandpa’s apartment.
As an adult, I now know what my young mind couldn’t understand then: it’s impossible to go through life without 47 . We may come across difficulties in our life, but we need to be brave, face the problem and carry on.
