The latest reform in testing is the computerized test. Test questions and answer choices are presented on the 21 and students can answer with a tap of the keyboard or a click of the mouse. Before the actual test begins, there usually is an instruction showing how to use the computer to 22 the questions. Scores are displayed on the screen at the end of the test so that a student has immediate feedback 23 having to return several days later for results.
Some computerized tests are “adaptive”. This means that a test question is selected from a large pool of items based on how the test taker has responded to the 24 questions. The first question presented is of medium difficulty. If the test taker answers 25 , the next item will be more difficult. If he or she answers incorrectly, the next question will be easier. The computer 26 questions by level of difficulty and many other factors such as sex, race and age references, subject area the question is drawn from, and form of question, before presenting it on the screen. In this way, the questions are “adapted” to find the true skill 27 of the test taker.
Among all the conveniences of computerized testing, there are some 28 . No longer can you have a quick look at the 29 test, answer the easy questions first, and come back later to finish the difficult ones. Test items are presented one at a time, and you must choose an answer in order to move on to the next question. Once you have confirmed your answer, you cannot go back to 30 it if,later on, you realize that your answer was wrong.

It was a cold winter morning. Half asleep at the train station, I stared into the distance, 36 for the train to take me to my 37 in Boston. The word was quiet. The very few people on the street kept to themselves, 38 their steaming cups of coffee.
Reaching into my pocket as the 39 was approaching, my numb hand searched for the $ 20 bill to pay my fare. The pocket was 40 ! I searched through my bag and then I felt 41 . Unless the money dropped from the sky, I’d be 42 there.
“What’s the matter?” A short, elderly man stood before me.
“Oh, nothing…. Well, I 43 my money and now I can’t pay for the ticket. I’m going to 44 my match class, and the train is leaving.”
“Here, use this.”
The man held a $ 20 bill. I looked up, 45 . People just didn’t do that anymore. Everyone worried about their own 46 , rarely stopping to think about others, especially teenage strangers.
“Thank you, but no, I can’t.”
“ 47 it – go!” The man pushed me 48 the train. I bought a round – trip ticket, and he refused the change I 49 to give him back. I did not know what to say – a million thoughts raced through my mind, yet I stood 50 .
For the train ride I was silent. I began to see the world through 51 eyes. That man made a difference with such a simple 52 .
A week later I was at the train station again, with an extra $ 20 53 I saw the man. And there he was.
“excuse me, sir, I believe I owe you this.” I 54 the money into his hand.
Failing to refuse, he said, “Just remember to do the same for someone in your shoes someday.” I smiled, content.
The elderly man is my hero. For many, heroes are famous, but my hero is a 55 stranger who taught me a lesson in life. I will never forget his kindness.

But at 38 , a different story is told. How we treat our loved ones, young and old. Later in the kitchen, as I 39 our meal, my daughter walked up to me, very still. When I turned, I 40 knocked her down. “Get out of the way!” I shouted with a frown(皱眉头). She stepped away silently, with her little heart 41 . I didn’t realize how harshly I had spoken.
That night, when I lay 42in bed, God’s quiet voice spoke to me, “While 43 with a stranger, you are calm and polite, but with those you love, you are QUICK to excite—Go look around on the kitchen floor, you will find some flowers there by the 44 . Those are the flowers she brought for you. She 45 them herself—pink, yellow, and your favorite blue. She stood there quietly, and you never saw the 46in her eyes.”
By this time, I felt sad and small and now my own tears had begun to fall. I quietly went and knelt by her 47 , “Wake up, my dear,” I said. “Are these the flowers you picked up for me?” She smiled, “I found them out by the tree. I 48 them in a napkin, just for you. And she whispered, “Mommy, that’s Ok—I still love you 51 .”I hugged her and said, “I love you too, and I love the flowers.”

Once again, I was in a new school. So was a girl in my class named Paris. That’s where the 31 ended.
I was tall and she was small. I was one of the oldest in the class while she was the youngest. I was 32 and shy. She wasn’t. I couldn’t 33 her, considering her my enemy. But she wanted to be friends.
One day, she invited me over and I said yes — I was too 34 to say no. Actually no one has invited me over to play before. But this girl, who wore the latest 35 , wanted to see me.
She lived on the fourth floor in a two-room place with her mother, her stepfather, her two brothers and her sister. When we got to the room she 36 with her sister, she took out a big case of Barbies(芭比娃娃)- which was my next 37 . I would have thought she’d outgrown them. I has never played with them. But we sat on the floor of a walk-in cupboard laughing as we 38 crazy stories about the Barbies. That’s 39 we found out that we both wanted to be writers when we were older. We both had wile 40 .
We had a great day that afternoon. Our jaws ached from 41 so much. She showed me her outfits, which had 42 come from a designer clothing store down the block. The woman who owned it used her 43a model sometimes for her newspaper ads and gave her clothes44 .
Paris had the whole neighborhood 45 . The bookstore owners lent her fashion magazines, the movie theater gave her free 46 and the pizza place let her have free slices. Soon I was 47in her magic world. We slept over at each other’s houses, spent every free moment together. My dark hair grew out and I learned to love being 48 .
Paris, my first real friend since childhood, helped me 49 the through teenage years and taught me an amazing and very surprising thing about making friends: your “worst enemy” can 50 to be your best friend.
