I was interested to read a newspaper article about a new concept in old people’s homes in France. The idea is simple 41 revolutionary -- combining a residential (住宅的)home for the elderly with a nursery school in the same building. The children and the residents eat lunch together and 42 activities such as music, painting, gardening, and 43 for the pets which the residents are encouraged to keep. In the afternoons, the residents enjoy reading or telling stories to the children, and 44 a child is feeling sad or tired, there is always somebody attending to (照顾) him. There are trips out and birthday parties, too.
The 45 are enormous for everyone concerned. The children are happy because they get a lot more individual 46 and respond well because someone has time for them. They also learn that old people are not “different” or “frightening” in 47 way. And of course, they see illness and death and learn to 48 them. The residents are happy because they feel 49 and needed. They are more active and more interested in life when the children are around and they take more interest in their appearance, too. And the staff(全体职员) are happy because they see an improvement in the 50 and psychological health of the residents and have an army of assistants to help with the children.

Five months after my husband Steve died, I woke up one morning to the maddening sound of a leaking faucet(水龙头). I knew it needed repairs badly, but it1me so much just to think of it.
All our2life, I was the "artist" bringing to our house much imagination. Steve was the"3" one. He had a real gift for handling chores(家务活),4me from unpleasant repair jobs.
But how could such a good man have his life cut short so suddenly! I had been so sad and angry that I completely5the house. That leaky faucet somehow awakened me to the fact that I now had to6the challenge of getting things fixed.
I got a workman named Ahmed. Entering the house, he stopped before a picture of Steve and me. "Doesn't your husband7this kind of work?" he asked. "It's not hard."
"He died months ago. When he was alive, he did all the repair jobs8." I said quietly. Ahmed looked at me9, but he didn't reply. He fixed the faucet, adjusted the dishwasher door, and replaced a showerhead. Apparently he was gifted as Steve had been.
He did a(n)10job. I asked him to name his fee. "No charge, Ma'am," he said. "My father died early, and the neighbors helped my family through."
By fixing a faucet, Ahmed mended my soul. Although I would sure carry the pain of11with me along, Ahmed reminded me of the abundant12in the world.

I had worried myself sick over Simon's mother coming to see me. I was a new1, and I gave an honest account of the students' work. In Simon's case, the grades were awfully low. He couldn't read his own handwriting.2he was a bright student. He discussed adult subjects with nearly adult comprehension. His work in no way reflected his3.
So when Simon's mother entered the room, my palms(手掌心) were sweating. I was completely4for her lisses on both my cheeks."I came to thank you," she said, surprising me beyond speech.5me, Simon had become a different person. He talked of how he6me, he had began to make friends, and for the first time in his twelve years, he had7spent an afternoon at a friend's house. She wanted to tell me how grateful she was for the8I had nurtured(培养) in her son. She kissed me again and left.
sat, stunned (惊呆), for about half an hour,9what had just happened. How did I make such a life-changing difference to that boy without10knowing it? What I finally came to11was one day, several months before, when some students were12reports in the front of the class, Jeanne spoke13, and to encourage her to raise her voice, L had sai, "Speak up. Simon's the expert on this. He is the14one you have to convince, and he can't hear you in the15of the room." That was it. From that day on, Simon had sat up straighter, paid more attention,16more, and became happy. And it was all because he17to be the last kid in the last row. The boy who most needed18was the one who took the last seat that day.
It taught me the most19lesson over the years of my teaching career, and I'm thankful that it came20and positively. A small kindness can indeed make a difference.

For example, on Christmas morning, children are excited about3with their new toys. But their4soon wear off and by January those5toys can be found put away in the basement. The world is full of6stamp albums and unfinished models, each standing as a monument to someone's7interest. When parents bring home a pet, their child8bathes it and brushes its fur. Within a short time, however, the9of caring the animal is handed over to the parents. Adolescent enter high school with great10but soon looking forward to11. The same is true of the young adults going to the college. And then, how many12, who complain about the long drives to work,13drove for hours at a time when they first14their drivers licenses?
