Students often meet with questions as follows: bullied b
y someone, worried about a weak subject, puzzled by family problems or concerned about pets at home. All the questions above may make you not concentrated on your study. Who can you turn to if you are such an unlucky student? A great person to share your thoughts and feelings with is your school counselor (顾问).
Add school counselors to the list of people you can turn to when you need help. They know how to listen and can help kids with life's challenges (挑战). Counselors have special training in how to help kids solve problems, make decisions, and stand up for themselves. That doesn't mean your counselor will wave a magic wand and the problem will go away. But it does mean he or she will help you cope with it. Coping is an important word to know. Sometimes, kids and grown-ups have difficult problems. Coping means that someone is trying to handle these problems and make things better.
Your school counselor is available for you and wants to make your school experience the best it can be. The counselor's job is to take your problem seriously and help you find a solution. The counselor also wants to help you learn as much as you can in class, be a contributing member of the school community, and be a positive influence on your environment. What makes a person a scientist? Does he have ways or tools of learning that are different from those of others? The answer is “no”. It is not the tools a scientist uses but how he uses these tools that makes him a scientist. You will probably agree that knowing how to use a power is important to a carpenter. You will probably agree, too, that knowing how to investigate(调查),how to discover information, is important to everyone. The scientist, however, goes one step further, he must be sure that he has a reasonable answer to his questions and that his answer can be confirmed by other persons. He also works to fit the answers he gets to many questions into a large set of ideas about how the world works
The scientist’s knowledge must be exact. There is no room for half right or right just half the time. He must be as nearly right as the conditions permit. What works under one set of conditions at one time must work under the same conditions at other times. If the conditions are different, any changes the scientist observes in a demonstration must be explained by the changes in the conditions. This is one reason that investigations are important in science. Albert Einstein, who developed the theory of relativity, arrived at this theory through mathematics. The accuracy of his mathematics was later tested through investigations. Einstein’s ideas were shown to be correct. A scientist uses many tools for measurements. Then the measurements are used to make mathematical calculations that may test his investigations.

The World Trade Organization(WTO), established on January 1, 1995, is an open, non-discriminatory trading system. As a successor to the GATT, established in the wake of the Second World War, it is to help world's trade flow freely, fairly and predictably.
While the WTO is still young, the multilateral(多边的)trading system that was originally set up under GATT is already 50 years old. The system celebrated its golden jubilee(50周年纪念)in Geneva on 19 May, 1998, with many heads of states and government leaders attending.
The past 50 years have seen an exceptional(罕见的)growth in the world trade. Merchandise exports grew on average by 6% annually(每年地). Total trade in the WTO has helped to create a strong and prosperous trading system contributing to unprecedented growth.
China was an original member of GATT, but for historical and political reasons it was withdrawn from GATT by the government in Taibei in 1950. But over the last several years, China hopes to be seeking to resume(恢复)its contracting party status. China has become a member of the WTO before the body starts a new round of negotiations(谈判)late this year. Premier Zhu Rongji paid a nineday US visit from April 6, 1999. He is the first Chinese Premier to visit US. President Clinton agreed to have talks on China's entry into the WTO with a new round of negotiations in Beijing.
Now China has joined the WTO. China's entry into the WTO is not only of economical but also of political importance. China has made attracting progress since its reform and opening up to the outside world. It is growing more and more powerful in economy. China cannot be without the world just as the world cannot be without China. The entry of China into WTO will further strengthen the comprehensive national power of China; it can also quicken the economic development of the world.

Forests have always been useful and important to man who makes use of them in many ways. Every day trees are serving man everywhere. Trees supply man with fruits and building materials in the form of wood. Without trees it would be impossible to build houses, boats, bridges and so on. Furniture such as desks, chairs and beds is made of wood. Trees can stop man from terrible heat. They're also useful in preventing good and rich top soil from being washed away during heavy rains.
If there were no trees, heavy rains would wash away the rich top soil that is so important to plants. The result is that the land will become a desert. There are plenty of desert areas in the world. A long time ago these desert areas used to be very rich areas, but man in the past had no enough knowledge about science of nature, they cut down too many trees in the area where they lived and never planted new ones. By and by the rich top soil was blown and washed away by strong winds and heavy rains. In the end the rich land changed into useless deserts where nothing could grow.According to the passage, ______.

Sociologists(社会学家), working in western countries, have found that a large number of women wished they had been born men. The number is said to be as high as 60% in Germany.
"Women often wish they had the same chances as men have, and think it is still men's world. " said Dr. James Helen, one of the sociologists who did the study.
Many men say that they have more duties than women. A man has to make money to support his family and to make the important decision, so it is right for men to be paid more. Some are even against their wives working at all. When wives go out to work, they say, the home and children cannot be taken good care of. If women take full-time jobs, they won't be able to do what they are best at doing: making a nice home and bringing up the children.
Some women disagree. They say they want to get out of their homes and to have freedom to choose between work and home life. Women have the right of equal pay and equal chances.
Anne Harper has a very good job. She also believes in "Women's Liberation", "I don't wish I were a man," she says, "and I don't think many women do. But I do wish people would stop treating us like second-class people. At work, for example, we usually do the work that men do but get paid less. There are still a lot of jobs only to men—usually they are the best ones. If you are a man, you have a much better chance of living a wonderful life. How many women scientists are there…or engineers?"Many men think ______.
A.women can't do what men can
B.men have to work much harder than women
C.men can make money more easily than women
D.women's duty is mainly to do housework at home
Some women have different ideas. They say that ______.

B.women want more freedom in deciding the kind of life they want
C.if women are given equal pay, they can do everything instead of men
D.women are no longer interested in taking care of their homes
Anne Harper thought that ______.
A.women should live a better life than men
B.women should be really liberated
C.women should be given better jobs than men
D.women should live a more wonderful life than men
