In the West, some people believe that personality can be predicted according to the time of the year the person was bor. From China comes the belief that the year of birth influences one’s personality. In the past century, a new belief ahs arisen: the idea that personality is related to one’s ABO blood type. People with blood type A, for example, are considered more likely to be serious, hard-working, and quiet, while people with blood type O are likely to be popular and outgoing, yet often unable to finish what they start. Though this belief continues to be strong, some people question whether it is true.
The blood-type personality theory(理论) started in Japan in 1927 when Furukawa Takehi noticed personality similarities and differences among his workers. This idea soon went out of fashion, but was brought back by a Japanese television host named Toshitaka Nomi in the 1970s. The belief is still strong in Japan and is increasingly popular in neighboring countries. Some young Koreans have taken to the theory. A recent study showed 76 percent of Koreans aged between13 and 64 believing in the blood-type personality connection. Though most Asians might believe in the blood-type theory, for many it seems harmless and not something to be taken too seriously.
Is the belief true? The scientists in Asia largely think the belief as a modern-day superstition(迷信). Most studies have failed to find any strong connection between blood and personality. Generally, scientists are against making predictions or important decisions based on this questionable theory. The writer uses blood type A and O as an example to explain ________.

Success is a key goal for most people. We are always trying to find the way to success, which means power, pride and glory (荣誉). There have been many stories of success I was told since I was a child. From then on, I have been hoping to be successful.
What is success? Different people have different opinions. To start with, some people, such as workers and waiters / waitresses, are looking forward to becoming rich, which allows them to buy what they want. They treat it as success. What’s more, some contestants, such as players, sportsmen and singers, are always trying their best to win. As long as they win, they believe that they are stronger than others. Last but not least, there are some other people who enjoy helping others. As the saying goes, the roses in her hand, the flavor (香味) in mine. Through helping others, we can also feel happy and successful.
In my opinion, success is quite simple. It means you can live the life you want and you can feel happy very often. Sometimes, money cannot bring you happiness, and you can’t have the feeling of success, because money is just the tool (工具) to achieve your goal but never the goal. Therefore, look for what you really want and then work hard for it. Then you are close to success.

Our 4th-grade class is studying how things have changed over time. To get more information, I spoke with my great-grandmother to find out what her school was like when she was my age. The following is what she told me. |
My school was called Algoe School. It was built in 1902 and was a one-room school. There was only one teacher, but the students were from different grades. Algoe School sometimes had as many as 18 students, but once there were only two.
We all had jobs to do every day. The teacher rang the school bell every morning. There was a flagpole (旗杆) in front of our school. We raised the flag every morning. At noon break, one student cleaned the blackboard. Some students swept the floor. And two students had the job of walking to a nearby farm to bring back a big bag of drinking water.
In winter, our school was heated by a wood-burning stove (炉子). On very cold mornings, we all sat around the stove and the teacher gave us lessons. Although it was very cold, we all felt happy.

Reporter: How long have you been a firefighter?
Wilson: Eight years.

Wilson: First, I had to take a lot of tests. Then, I went to firefighting school for 13 weeks. I learned how to put out fires and how to use equipment (设备).
