Dear Liz,
My stay in Thailand has certainly been the experience of my life.
Life is busy and exciting.Bangkok is just like any other big city with a population of 10million and heavy traffic.I'm very lucky because my host family is in a nice quiet area outsidethe city. There are Mr.and Mrs.Phairat, their son Sanan, who is 18,the daughter Chinda, whois 16, and Grandpa and Grandma.
I go to an international school with Sanan and Chinda. The school teaches about 70 percentin English, and 30 percent in Thai.I've learned some spoken language, but Thai writing is very difficult. The cooking lesson is my favourite.I'm learning all about Thai food and culture People don’t use chopsticks here, but spoons and forks. When I come back,I'm going to cook you a real Thai meal.
Last weekend we visited some temples. We also drove to Pattaya beach near Bangkok.Ithought it was great, but Sanan and Chinda say that next month they’re taking me to PhuketIsland, where the beaches are even more beautiful. The month after next,we’re going to travelto Mr.Phairat,s hometown in the north of Thailand. The Phairats own land there, and theyhave two elephants.I’m going to ride those elephants — and even wash them.Sanan andChinda say it’s really fun.
I'm amazed by everything in this country, especially by the elephants.Elephants are animportant pan of Thai culture and way of life. They have been a traditional symbol(象征)ofThailand for many years in times of war and peace. In the seventh century,a Thai king trained 20,000 elephants for battle.
I’ll tell you all about my Thai boxing(拳击)lessons next time I write.
Love,

You can be proud of yourselves, even if you can only make one or two of these green changes. The goal here is to limit carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, which are closely connected to the big problem of global-warming (全球变暖).
WAY 1: Bring your own cup to Starbucks. You’ll get a 10-cent discount, and it’s one less paper cup to end up in a dustbin. The store won’t create more waste when they throw away a cup.
WAY 2: Turn off your computer. When in standby mode, your PC is still using energy. Turning off a monitor (显示器) for 40 hours a week may only save $5 amonth, but it reduces CO2 by 750 pounds.
WAY 3: Reuse plastic bags. Instead of throwing away 100 billion plastic bags a year, try and get a second, third, or tenth use out of them. Better yet, next time you shop, try a reusable bag. The amount of oil it would take to make just 14 plastic bags would run your car for one mile.
WAY 4: Use recycled paper in the bathroom. Most of the toilet paper we use is made fromtrees found in forests. If every family replaced(替换)one roll of toilet paper with a recycled one, 424,000 trees would still be standing.
WAY 5: Plant a tree. Adding green to your garden is beautiful and earth-pleasing. Just one tree will help make cleaner air and save the environment from 5, 000 pounds of hot carbon dioxide each year. How many ways are mentioned(提及) in the passage?
A.Two. | B.Three. |
C.Four. | D.Five. |
What will happen if our PC is turned off when it isn’t in use?
A.It will help to save a large amount of money. |
B.It will help to reduce a great deal of CO₂. |
C.It will save the amount of oil that runs your car for a mile. |
D.It will be like planting 1.7 million acres of new trees. |
Which ways suggest recycling or reusing of things?
A.Ways 3 & 4. | B.Ways 2 & 3. |
C.Ways 3 & 5. | D.Ways 2 & 4. |
How do these ways do good to our environment?
A.They all help reduce the use of energy like electricity. |
B.They all cut down the number of the use of paper. |
C.They all produce less greenhouse gases as a result. |
D.They all help protect our trees and forests. |
What is the best title for the passage?
A.Ways toSave Money | B.Waysto Be Earth-Friendly |
C.Ways to End Global-Warming | D.Waysto Limit Carbon Dioxide |
