Who wants to carry a bulky bag to school? No children. Nobody wants one shoulder to be lower than the other, and paining(疼痛)too. In India, most of us would look at the reduction(减少)of textbooks as a way out. But in a country like America, there are always more choices. A company called goReader has created a "school bag" which is the size of a laptop computer(笔记本电脑), weighing about 2.5 kg. The goReader has a color screen and can "hold" all the textbooks that a student may need, says a report in ’The Asian Age’ newspaper.
The company plans to work closely with the publishers(出版商) of textbooks so that these books can be supplied on the Internet. All the students will have to do is to download(下载) their textbooks. Making notes and marking important parts of a lesson can be done just as lots of students have done on their textbooks before.
At present, the plan is being tested out in a university. Richard Katzmann, the owner of the company is having his creation tested at Chicago’s DePaul University, where he studied. People often said Thomas Edison was the greatest genius(天才) of his age. There are only a few men in all of history, who have changed the lives of other men as much as the inventor of the first useful electric light. But Edison could never be pleased only because someone said he was a genius. “There is no such a thing as genius,” Edison said. He thought what people called genius was mostly hard work.
But Edison was a thinker as well as a worker. From his earliest days as a child he wondered about the secrets of nature. He tried to understand them, and then he tried to learn what he could usefully do with them.
Edison enjoyed thinking. He knew that most people would do almost anything instead of the difficult work of thinking, especially if they do not think very often. But he knew, too, that thinking could give men enjoyment and pleasure.
Edison could not understand why anyone could not be interested in life. As he loved to think, he also loved to work. On the day he became 75 years old, someone asked him what idea he had about life. “Work,” he answered, “Discovering the secrets of nature and using them to make men happier.” He said he had enough inventions in his mind to give him another 100 years of work. What is genius according to Thomas Edison?
A.Hard thinking. | B.Hard work. |

More and more people think it necessary to study in an English-speaking country and it didn’t take long at all for me to decide to come and study in UK.
I have been used to school life since I came here two months ago, and I am starting to enjoy most of my time in here. School starts at 9 o’clock every morning, and every Monday, Wednesday and Friday we have long days, in which we have 9 lessons and school finishes at 4 o’clock. Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday we have short days, in which we have only 6 lessons and finish at 1 o’clock. After lessons, we have 2 hours of activity time, when you can choose from a number of activities, including many sports, such as rugby(英式橄榄球) , football, basketball and tennis.
As a boarder(寄宿者), the quality of food is something I consider very important, and Merchiston has not let me down. The school kitchens are run by a professional company, and the quality of food is excellent, and they are always trying to make the diet healthy. One of the obvious advantages of being a boarder is that we can have breakfast in the school, which means we don’t have to pull ourselves out of bed as early as the day pupils! How many lessons do the students have every week in this school?

Have you ever been so worried about something that you have a headache or even can’t sleep at night? Then you cannot pay enough attention during a test or in your study. If so, then you know that is stress. You are worried too much about something. The bad feeling in your mind can make you angry, sad, or scared, and can even give you a stomachache or a headache.
However, some kind of stress is good. Excitement might happen when you are called to give a speech at school. You feel nervous but excited. This kind of stress can help you to get things well done. And you may do a better job in your test if the stress pushes you to prepare more beforehand.
On the other hand, bad stress can last long if you are unable to come over your problems. You may not feel well, if your parents are having a quarrel, if a family member is badly ill, if you’re doing poorly at school, or if anything else makes you unhappy. That kind of stress isn’t going to help you. And it can actually let you do worse in your daily life. The best way to fight the stress is to have a balanced life. Make sure you get enough sleep and eat properly. Have some regular exercise. You should take some time for fun. Get advice from your parents, teachers and friends. Soon after that, you’ll probably get away with your stress.

Mike Myers is a teacher at Chauncey Rose High School in Terre Haute, Indiana. Last year, he taught his students about the world’s rain forests. They learned that rain forests are important because the plants and animals of the rain forest give us food, wood, and medicine.
Destruction of the world’s rain forests is a serious problem. Unluckily, rain forests are disappearing at a rate of 80 acres per minute! As part of a class project, Myers’ students bought three acres of rain forest in Central America. They paid $25 per acre. The students hope that the land they bought will be protected and not destroyed. The students became so interested in rain forests that they decided to get a closer look at a real rain forest.
So last June, Myers and four of his students took a boat ride down a river. They saw alligators and crocodiles. In the middle of the week, a guide took Myers and his students into the rain forest. “The monkeys were not happy that we were in their forest. They broke small branches off the trees and threw them at us,” one of the students said, “It was a great learning experience for all of us,” said Myers.
Each student chose something specific about Costa Rica to study involving the plants, animals, food, and culture. During the last few days the group had time to do fun activities. They went whitewater rafting and horseback riding, and visited Costa Rica’s active volcano.

There are many colours in nature. But do you know that a colour has weight? I think you’ll say “no”. But I am afraid you are wrong. If you don’t believe, you may do a small experiment(实验).
First, put two objects with the same weight into two boxes. Then cover the boxes. Wrap(包裹) one box with a red piece of paper, the other with a white piece of paper. Now hold the boxes with your hand one by one. It is certain that you will think the red one is a little heavier.
Why does it happen? A scientist found that different colours have different weight in a man’s mind. So he did many tests and at last he got the result. That is to say, every colour has its own weight in our mind. The heaviest colour is red, then blue, green, orange, yellow and white. The scientists told us that colours also have smell. Can you smell the colour? Of course not. Then why did the scientists say so? That is because every colour represents a kind of light wave(光波)------ a certain wavelength(波长). It reaches our brain(大脑) through organs(感觉器官)
According to this discovery, scientists say that people accept the colour they like, and refuse the colour they hate. So your body and mind will be healthy by using the colours you like. Or you’ll be nervous or even get ill. If you stay in a room with red windows, wallpapers and furniture(家具) for two hours, you’ll feel you have been there for four hours. But if the room is blue, you’ll feel you have been there for only one hour. Another example, if a person walks out of a red room and into a blue room, his temperature will fall. That means our body temperature will change when we see different colours.Which is the lightest colour in a man’s mind?
A.Red | B.Blue | C.Green | D.White |
Which of the following is NOT true?
A.Different colours have different weights in a man’s mind. |
B.The colour “blue” is the second heaviest colour in a man’s mind. |
C.People can’t smell the colours. |
D.The colour you don’t like will keep you healthy. |
What will happen when you get into a cool coloured room from a warm coloured room?
A.You will feel excited. |
B.You will be happy and contened. |
C.Your temperature will fall. |
D.You will be nervous. |
According to the passage, how long will you feel if you stay in a red room for an hour?
A.Two hours. | B.Fours hours |
C.Six hours | D.Eight hours. |
