[阅读材料] Speaking Mandarin Chinese
In China, there are over 100 different dialects, which are so complicated that even people from neighboring villages may not understand each other. In the information age, such barrier of language must be removed by popularizing Mandarin because it inversely affects the quality and efficiency of oral communication.
We have many things to do in Mandarin popularization. First, we should carry out a mass education on the importance of speaking Mandarin to make everyone understand that it is his responsibility to do so. In the past, little progress has been made in isolated rural areas because the natives do not bother to take pains to learn to speak Mandarin. Next, speaking good Mandarin should be compulsory in classrooms, in public offices, in movies and TV programs in China. Finally, we should attach great importance to public education because China has large illiterate（文盲的）population. A poorly educated nation has no international reputation. Popularizing Mandarin is only the first step in changing China into a better-educated nation.
Popularizing Mandarin is of great importance because it may push up our economic growth, accelerate the development of science and technology, and promote the unification of China. With a population of over 1.3 billion people, it is not an easy task. But we must do it and do it effectively.

For many years, scientists have warned that smoking tobacco is bad for health. Yet people around the world continue to smoke. The World Health Organization estimates that more than four million people die each year from the effects of smoking. That number is increasing.
Scientists have identified more than forty chemicals in tobacco smoke that cause cancer in humans and animals. Nicotine (尼古丁) is the major poison in cigarettes that gives pleasure to smokers. The American Cancer Society says nicotine can kill a person when taken in large amounts. It does this by stopping the muscles used for breathing. Also, studies have found that nicotine can be as harmful as alcohol or the illegal drugs. So experts say it is better never to start smoking and become dependent on nicotine than it is to smoke with the idea of stopping later.
Smoking tobacco is the leading cause of lung disease. Smoking also has been linked to heart disease, stroke and many kinds of cancer. American government health experts say smoking affects not only the smoker. Tobacco smoke also affects the health of people who do not smoke. Smokers may harm the health of family members and people at work. Tobacco smoke causes an estimated 3,000 non-smoking Americans to die of lung cancer each year.
Therefore, it can be seen that smoking begins to cause damage immediately. All cigarettes can damage the body. And there is no safe way to smoke.
