One winter during college in New York, I took an 8: 00 a.m. history class. The professor was very __36 in class. He just looked at his lecture notes and __37__ looked up at us. I felt that I needed to get rid of my boredom, so I created a little __38__ for myself. I tried to find something from his lecture to ask a question about, forcing me to __39__ rather than letting my eyes close. The first time I raised my hand, he was surprised, but obviously pleased to have a question to answer. __40__ , his answers were always interesting. I continued to do this every day in the course and found my-self ac
tually __41__ the material. The professor became a bit more __42__ and some other students also joined me in asking questions. My little game had __43__ me from being bored, __44__ it was expected to do. I learned a lot about world history in the discussions with him. The professor obviously knew his material, but had a hard time __45__ it on to his undergraduates in an interesting way. On the last day of class we gathered our books and headed for the door for the last time. The shy professor stepped directly in front of me as I reached the door. "Thank you for making this class so interesting,"
he said. I was so surprised. To me, it had been a pleasant way to pass the time; I had no idea that my asking questions had an effect on him and the others at all. That moment has stayed with me for 30 years. Each of us can have a(n) __46__ not just on our own experiences, but on those of others, and I’ll never forget the professor who taught me a lesson about the power of acts of kindness, intended __47__ not.

My grandparents were married for over half a century, and played their own special game from the time they had met each other. The goal of their game was to write the word "shmily" in a 31 place for the other to find. They took turns leaving "shmily" around the house, and as soon as one of them 32 it, it was their turn to hide it once more.
There was no 33 to the places where "shmily" would appear. Sometimes, "Shmily" was written in the 34 left on the mirror after a hot shower, where it would reappear bath after bath. 35 , my grandmother even unrolled an entire roll of toilet paper to 36 "shmily" on the very last sheet.
It took me a long time before I was able to fully 37 my grandparents' game. It was 38 their funny little game; it was a way of life. Grandma and Grandpa held hands every chance they could. They 39 kisses as they ran into each other in their tiny kitchen. Before every meal they bowed their heads and gave their 40 : a wonderful family, good fortune, and 41 .
But there was a 42 cloud in my grandparents' life: my grandmother had breast cancer, which had first appeared ten years earlier. As always, Grandpa was with her every
43 of the way. He comforted her in their yellow room, painted that way 44____ she could always be surrounded by sunshine, even when she was too 45 to go outside. Then one day, what we all 46 finally happened. Grandma was gone.
"Shmily." It was written in yellow on the pink ribbons of my grandmother's funeral bouquet. As the crowd 47 and the last mourners (哀悼者) turned to leave, my aunts, uncles, cousins and other family members 48 and gathered around Grandma 49 . Grandpa stepped up to my grand-mother's casket and, 50 with sorrow, he began to sing to her. Through his tears and grief, the song came, a deep and throaty lullaby (摇篮曲).
SHMILY: See how much I love you.

On a cold November afternoon,my mother and 1 were walking home from a 21 .We were dressed 22 .1 was feeling a little 23 as 1 was carrying our shopping, and decided to throw away something. So I started to walk towards a 24 when I noticed a poor man walking out of the restaurant in front of us.He 25 over to another nearby dustbin and started looking through it.
I suddenly felt very guilty because 1 was about to throw away a new drink just because it was
26 .1 walked up to him and handed the 27 and some snacks over to him.The man looked up 28 and took what I gave him.
A huge smile 29 across his face and this 30 me to feel indescribable satisfaction.I felt I couldn’t be happier 31 myself. But then he said:“Wow,this is my son’s lucky day!”
With that,he thanked me happily and started off on his bike,I 32 heard him whistling a song as he rode away.
I got a warm 33 inside.I now understand 34 is meant by the saying “giving is getting”.
Although it only 35a little action and a few words,I gained and learned more in those two minutes than I did in the rest of the month.Everyone in the world needs 36 ,everyone can 37 help and everyone will be helped by 38 kindness.
The image of that man’s happiness caused by my small gift appears in my mind every 39 I have the chance to do something nice.
This is the 40 of charity.

Monty Roberts, owner of a horse ranch (牧场) in San Ysidro, once told us a story. “When a young man was a senior, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to__36__and do when he grew up. Two days later he received his__40__back. On the front page was a__41__red F. The teacher said, “This is an__42__dream for a young boy like you. You have no money. Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. ” Then the teacher__43__, “If you will rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will reconsider your__44__.” The boy asked his father what he should do. His father said, “Look, son, you have to make up your own__45__on this. However, I think it is a very__46__decision for you.”__47__, after a week, the boy__48__the same paper, making no__49__at all. He stated, “You can keep the F and I’ll keep my__50__.”
Monty then turned to us and said, “I tell you this story__51__you are sitting in my 4,000-square-foot house in the middle of my 200-acre horse ranch. I still have that school paper framed (装框) over the fireplace.” He added, “The best part of the__52__is that two summers ago that same schoolteacher brought 30 kids to camp out on my ranch for a week. When the teacher was leaving, he said, “Look, Monty, I can tell you this now. When I was your teacher, I was__53__of a dream stealer. During those years I stole a lot of kids’ dreams.__54__you had enough determination not to give up on yours.”
Don’t let anyone__55__ your dreams. Follow your heart, no matter what.

“ Down-to-earth” means someone or something that is honest, practical and easy to deal with.It is 36 to find someone who is down-to-earth.A person who is down-to-earth is easy to talk to 37 accepts other people as equals.A down-to-earth is just the 38 of someone who acts importantly and proudly.
Down-to-earth persons may be 39 members of society, of course. But they do not let their importance “ go to their 40”.They do not 41 themselves to be better persons than others of less importance, someone who is filled with his own importance and 42 , often without cause, is said to have “his nose in the air”.There is no way a person with his nose in the 43 can be down-to-earth.Americans use another expression that means almost the same 44 “down-to-earth”.The expression is “both-feet-on-the-ground”.Someone with both-feet-on-the-ground is a person 45 a good understanding of reality. He has what is called “ 46 sense”.He may have 47 , but he does not allow them to 48 his knowledge of what is real. The opposite kind of person is 49 who has his “head-in-the-clouds”.A man with his head in the clouds is a dreamer whose mind is not in the 50 world.
Sometimes 51 a dreamer can be brought back to earth. 52 words from a teacher can usually bring a day-dreaming student down-to-earth.
Usually, the person who is down-to-earth is very 53 to have both-feet-on-the-ground.
54 we have both our feet on-the-ground, when we are down-to-earth, we act 55 and openly toward others. Our lives are like the ground below us, solid and strong.

My father was in the navy, which meant that my mother was married to both my father and the sea. As was often the case, we had to pack our belongings into boxes and 21 those we had grown to love. We would arrive at our new home and find ourselves once again 22 at the pier (码头) waving good-bye to my father as his 23 pulled him away from us. My mother would turn my brother and I around before the ship was out of 24 , wipe our tears, and take us back home to start the process of
25 in the new environment again.
Throughout the years of changing 26 , schools and friends, there remained one constant in my childhood — my mother. For both my 27 and I, she was the cook, maid and teacher. She played these roles while 28 some type of part-time job. Leaving a promising career is just one of the 29 which my mother made for my family as we moved around the world with our father every three years or so.
30 she had to deal with only a small budget, my mother, 31 , managed to make each house to be the very home that is safe and 32 .
This probably sounds like a depressing way to live, 33 with two small children: “single” parenthood, short-term friendships, and the inability (无能) to 34 a career or establish a home. But it was not for my mother. She turned this 35 into adventure for us all! Each relocation (变换位置) was a
chance to 36 another part of the world. My mother greeted each new culture, climate and neighborhood. Each new house was a 37 to rearrange furniture, make curtains and 38 pictures. Every part-time job was an opportunity to learn something new and work with interesting people.
No matter how difficult the life was, she was always having a 39 attitude. She always had strength in the face of struggle and change. My mother was so 40 all those years during my childhood — she was my island in a sea of change. She is my hero.
