When I was in Germany, one day at Christmas-time I went to a post office to send a letter. To my 41 I found people queuing some paces away from the person at the savings deposit window. 42 so? Each did his business 43 but the line never moved a step 44 . I was very 45 , so I walked to the window to find out the cause. There was a notice on which was written “Thank you for your 46 for other’s privacy”—a polite 47 to keep people away from nosing into other’s 48 (money matters are regarded as privacy in Western countries). I was deeply impressed by the 49 and stayed a while to watch: they were waiting so 50 at a distance that they seemed quite 51 to the practice. The 52 thing happened at a public telephone box. 53 waiting for their turns always kept their distance—enough to be out of 54 . It’s another typical example!
From then on I 55 to watch their ways of doing things, manners, treatment 56 towards others. I found the Germans always mindful of other’s privacy. They avoided putting others in an embarrassing situation. For instance, they never 57 about age, incomes or the place to buy such a coat, 58 would they comment on the others or jewelry others wore. Their laws 59 reading diaries or opening letters without permission. That shows 60 matters are not allowed to be disturbed.

Lose-Win is weak. It’s easy to get stepped on. It’s easy to be the nice guy. It’s easy to give in, all in the name of being a peacemaker.
A girl named Jenny once told me about her 36 in the world of Lose Win during her eighth grade year before she finally broke 37 :
My 38 with my mom all started one day 39 she said to me sarcastically(讽刺地),“Wow, you’re sure sassy today.” I 40 it so literally (字面地) that then and there I decided to close myself off from her and never 41 back to her. So every time she would say something 42 I disagreed with her I would just say, “Okay, 43 you want, Mom”
But I really got cold quickly. And my 44 began to build. One night I talked to my mom about the school homework and she said, “Oh, that’s 45 ”and then went back to mop the floor.
“Don’t you ever 46 ?”I thought. But I didn’t say anything and stormed off. She had no idea I was 47 upset. She would have been willing to talk to me had I 48 her how important it was to me.
At last, I just blew up. “Mom, this has got to 49 . You tell me everything you want me to do and I just do it because it’s 50 than fighting. Well, I’m sick of it.” This all came as a 51 to her.
After my blowup, we felt like we were 52 all over in our relationship. But it’s getting better all the time. We discuss things now and I always 53 my feeling with her.
If you adopt Lose Win as your basic 54 toward life, then people will wipe their dirty feet on you. You’ll also be 55 your true feelings deep inside. And that’s not healthy.

The question of whether war is inevitable is one which has concerned many of the world’s great writers. Before 36 this question, it will be useful to introduce some 37concepts. Conflict, 38 as opposition among social units-or individuals-directed against one another, is 39from competition, which 40 opposition among social units 41seeking to obtain something which is 42 inadequate supply. Competitors may not know about one another, which those who 43in a conflict do. Conflict and competition are both 44 of opposition. The meaning of opposition has been stated as a process by which social unit function in the disservice of one another, opposition is 45contrasted to cooperation, a 46 by which social units function in the service of one another. These47are necessary because it is important to emphasize that competition between individuals or groups is inevitable in a world of limited 48 , but conflict isn’t . Conflict, nevertheless, is very likely to occur and is probably an essential and desirable 49of human societies.
Many authors have 50 their arguments that war cannot be avoided on the idea that in the struggle for existence among groups of animals, only those which are best 51 remain alive. In general, however, this struggle in nature is competition, not conflict. Those who fail in this competition 52 starve
to death or are 53 by other types of animals. This struggle for 54 is not similar to human war, but is like the competition of 55 for jobs, markets, and materials. The most important quality of this struggle is the competition for the necessities of life that are not enough to satisfy all.
