Not too long after I had begun to drive as a teenager, someone pulled out of a parking lot onto the road in front of m
e. I reacted 36 and pulled up very close behind her--- just to show my irritation(怒气) and let her know she didn't "just 37 with that!" We've all been there with 38 incidents and reactions. My mother was with me, and told me to turn into the 39 parking lot. Safely there, she asked me why I 40 that lady had pulled out in front of me purposely. 41 rude, power play--- I guessed. Mom said that maybe she had just had some bad 42 , maybe she was late picking up her child and was distracted(分心). Think of all the 43 of why someone does something like that. It's usually not on purpose--- but what I do as a reaction is on purpose. She always said that I 44 to think about the other side before I 45 . Usually the reaction causes more of a 46 .
I am in my fifties now, and to this day, that has always 47 my head whenever those
48 happen. I've 49 my children the same thing. We often see and hear about "road rage." No matter to what 50 that "rage" is taken, my children will say something like, "They need Grandma's words!" As adults, I don't see them react as most of us do 51 their first reaction is always anger and irritation --- they 52 it and 53 what the other person's pro
blem might be. Even if the other driver really might be 54 or doing a "power play," no more 55 reactions will occur because of their irritation.

What’s the secret of success? Is it having loads of money? Good luck? Great
teeth?
Sure, cash, luck, and a nice 36 can’t hurt. But many social scientists agree that what successful people have in common is this: They were 37.
There’s George Washington, the top general of America’s troops in the Revolutionary War, who lost two huge 38 and was nearly fired. 39 Steve Jobs, who developed a lot of failed products---and even got fired from Apple---before 40 to change the world with the iPod, iPhone, and iPad.
The 41 goes on: From Katy and Hall of Fame (名人堂)basketball legend Michael Jordan to Glee(欢乐合唱团 ) star Chris Colfer, the majority of today’s most successful people were 42 losers. They were dropped from record labels, 43_from basketball teams, or bullied in school. They felt humiliated, lost and 44.
But they eventually figured out how to move forward. And that is the key skill: the 45 to dust yourself off and try again. And again. Experts call this resilience(复原力 )---being able to 46 from setbacks. This is what turns losers into winners. Experts say that in terms of future success, resilience is more important than brains or talent. So 47 you fail a test or strike out at bat or sing off-key, don’t give up.

Instead of sending her away or 35 with her, he said to her, “Fetch me a mustard(芥末) seed from a home that has never 36 sorrow. We will use it to drive the sorrow out of your life.” The woman went off at once in 37 of that magical mustard seed.

I believe being honest is one of the greatest gifts. I know they call it a lot of fancy names these days, like 36 and straightforward. And it’s still what 37a man a good citizen. This is my code(准则),and I try to live by.
I’ve been in the taxi business for thirty-five years, 38 there is a lot about it that is not so good. Taxi drivers have to be rough and tumble(乱作一团) fellows to be able to take it in New York. You've got to be 39 to fight the New York traffic eight hours a day.
Because taxi drivers are tough, people get the 40 impression that they are bad. Taxi drivers are just like other people. Most of them will act as 41 fellows. Almost every week you read in the papers where a taxi driver 42 money or jewels or like that people leave in their 43 . If they weren't honest, you wouldn't be reading those stories in the papers. One time,I found an emerald(翡翠的)ring in my car. I remembered helping a lady with a lot of suitcases that day,so I went back to where I had 44 her off. It took me almost two days to wait for her in order to return her 45 to her. I didn't get as much as “thank you.” 46 ,I felt good because I had done what was right. I think I felt better than she 47 .
I was born and brought up in Ireland until I was nineteen years old. I came to this country in 1913 where I 48 several jobs to earn a few dollars before joining the army in World War I. After being discharged(退伍),I bought my own car and have owned one ever since. It hasn’t been too easy 49 ,but my wife takes care of our money and we have a good bit 50 for a rainy day(一时之需). In all my years of driving a taxi,I have never had___51__ with the public, not even with drunks. Even if they get a little headstrong(顽固的) once in a while,I just agree with them and then they behave themselves.
People ask me about tips. As far as I know, 52 everyone will give you something, because most Americans are 53 generous. I always try to be nice to everyone, whether they 54 or not. I believe in God and try to be a good member of my parish(教区). I try to act toward others like I think God wants me to act. I have been trying this for a long time, and the 55 I try,the easier it gets.

One cold rainy evening last October, as a medical student, I was in a hospital, gathering data
for my graduation paper.
Holding a patient questionnaire 34 some simple yes-or-no questions, I walked towards a 43-year-old patient who lay in bed alone. I was worried whether she would approve of my demands at such a late hour. 35 , she treated it with consideration. Soon I finished and prepared to leave. 36 I could stand up, she spoke up in a weak voice asking where I was from and why I was working so late in the evening.
Then she started talking about herself as well as her 37 , "My husband died about a year ago, 38 me the only breadwinner of my family. My pay as a cleaner is 39 enough for me and my three kids. I don't know what my children would be if something bad happened to me."
I didn't know what to say. I desperately tried to remember the lessons from a communication skills class I had taken years earlier, but my mind was 40.
Without realizing it, I had begun 41 her hand. Now that I didn't have anything to say, I just sat quietly while she talked. That's when it occurred to me that she was not expecting any 42 from me. She 43 wanted me to listen. All 1 did was nod my head as a way of showing my 44.
The conversation went on for about 20 minutes. Finally, she stopped talking. "I'm very sorry for keeping you here to listen to my problems, but I feel 45 now. I had no one to 46 out my problems to. Thank you so much, doctor."
Sometimes patients do not need expensive medicine or advanced technology. 47 , they just need someone with the 48 to lend an ear and spare a little of their time. For me, that is one of the best things a doctor can do for a patient, doesn't it?
