Earthquakes are hard to predict. but do you know what to do before, during and after an earthquake? Here’s some advice:
Before an earthquake It’s necessary to prepare yourself and your family. All family members should know how to turn off gas, water and electricity and know useful telephone numbers(doctor, hospital, police, 119, etc.). Never put heavy things over beds.
During an earthquake It’s important for each of you to stay calm. If you are indoors, quickly move to a safe place in the room such as under a strong table. The purpose is to protect yourself from objects, stay away from windows, large mirrors, heavy furniture and so on. If you’re cooking, turn off the gas. If you’re outdoors, move to an open area like a playground. Move away from buildings, bridge and trees. If you are driving, stop the car as soon as possible, staying away from bridges and tall building. Stay in your car.
After an earthquake Once the shaking has stopped, DO NOT run out of the building at once. It’s better to wait and leave when it’s safe. Check around you and help the people who are in trouble. If your building is badly broken, leave it. If you smell of hear a gas, get everyone outside and open windows and doors. If you can do it safely, turn off the gas. Report it to the gas company.

What do people do with their old, out of date but still useful computers? Most people don’t know how to deal with them. Many old computers are put away. Many more are simply thrown away as rubbish.
Finally, some companies are thinking of ways to bring down the number of old computers. Sony has agreed to help recycle old Sony products(产品). Dell, Hewlett Packard and other companies now also take back some old computers of their own brands.
In some countries, laws have been passed, too. Computer companies have to pay for collecting and recycling their used products. And 70% of computer waste must be recycled. The idea behind the laws is that computer companies themselves should pay for the cost. That will encourage them to make computers which are easier and cheaper to repair and upgrade(升级).
Yet many people are throwing away good computers, while others cannot afford them at all. Hundreds of organizations are working on this problem. They collect and repair old computers. Some also teach others how to repair computers. These repaired computers then go to schools, charities(慈善团体) or people who need them. Education is very important for the development of China. As we know, China has the largest population in the world and most of them live in the countryside. Because of the economic(经济)conditions, many families are very poor, especially those in the remote(偏僻的)areas, and they can’t afford to send their children to school. Many children have to stop attending school. Project Hope is aimed at solving this problem so that every child of school age can receive a regular education.
Project Hope mainly depends on the contributions(捐款)of the urban(城市的)people and overseas Chinese who care about the development of China’s education. The contributed(捐赠)money will be distributed(分配)by Project Hope council to the countryside to help the children who can’t afford the education. One hundred yuan will help such a child finish his primary education.
Project Hope is a good way to improve the education in the rural(农村的)areas, but it isn’t enough. So far, only a small part of the children benefit(受益)from it. So we should pay more attention to the problem and do much more to help raise the educational level of the country.
