Our class had a weekly class meeting this week. We talked about how to deal with lies, hoates (骗局) or rumors(谣言). Here are the stories some students told.
Zhang Wei: Yesterday my friend Jim went to school without his homework. He told his teacher that his dog ate it. It was just an excuse, he made it to cover the fact that he didn't do his homework. The teacher knew about that and made him stay to finish his homework after school. Sometimes we think we can avoid trouble by making excuses when we do something wrong, but we're really making the things worse.
Chen Ping: Last week I got a menage. It said, "A little girl called Julia has got brain cancer. The girl will get three cents from America Online each time this message is forwarded(转发). So please be kind and forward this to everyone you know. If not, you will have bad luck for a year." In fact, it is just one of the silly chain letters to cheat you and waste your time.
Xu Yan: A big earthquake hit Ya'an, Sichuan on April 20th. The earthquake was strongly felt by people in Chengdu. A rumor said Chengdu would be hit by a bigger earthquake in the coming days.
For the next several days, thousands of people camped outside their houses at night because of fear. Besides, many people rushed to buy food, water, medicine and so on. Some businessmen used people's fear of earthquake to help sell their goods at higher prices. Of course, nothing happened in the end.

Craig Kielburger was born in Canada on December 17th, 1982 and spent his childhood there. He often took part in sports, and he liked to help people. When Craig was twelve, he read a story in Toronto Star newspaper about a poor boy. The poor boy was killed because he fought for the rights of children. The poor boy was just twelve year old, too. After reading this article, Craig was so angry that he decided to help the children who should go to school instead of working in factories all day in some countries. So he gathered his friends and started a group the Twelve﹣Year﹣Olds. Soon many children joined them and they called the organization Free the Children. The organization has helped develop the education in Kenya, India, China and other countries. Today, they have built more than 700 schools and school rooms in these countries. Possible Earth﹣Like Planet Next Door?
Scientists say they discovered an earth﹣like planet outside our solar system (太阳系). It is a planet that could support life.
This planet is just 4.2light years away from us. It is so close that space scientists have considered it as a next door neighbor. They say it could be reached by an unmanned spaceship before the end of the century ﹣﹣ in time for people alive today to see it.
An international team of scientists found the planet moving around the star called "Proxima Centauri". The result came out last month from the scientific magazine Nature.
Scientists have long thought that a planet with water is important for life. And it has to be neither too hot nor too cold. The newly﹣discovered planet is a little larger than earth Scientists have named it Proxima B. It moves around its sun, Proxima Centauri, once every 11days.
American scientists have been using instruments for years to look for earth﹣like planets. In 2013, scientists' best guess was that there are about one billion (1,000million) "earths" in space.
Alan Boss is the chairman of a group for outer space research. He said that Proxima B not only confirms (确认) the discovery of a planet, but also increases the number of other possible"earths" greatly.
Boss said it is possible, even likely, that most stars have at least one earth﹣like planet, which he considers surprising.
So from the early number of a billion, this new research suggests there may be as many possible earth﹣like planets as there are stars in the Galaxy (银河系). That is, anywhere from 250billion to 500billion "earths".
This makes the possibility of living things increasingly likely Boss said he believes human beings will be able to show that there is life in places besides earth in his lifetime. "I am 65," he said, "but I expect to still be alive when it happens."

B. |
There are far more earth﹣like planets than people thought. |
C. |
Proxima B is not far from earth and is just like our neighbor. |
D. |
The Galaxy will be the only place for living things to live in. |
(4)What does Alan Boss mean by saying "but I expect to still be alive when it happens"? ____
A. |

B. |
Science is developing much faster than ever in recent years. |
