Elizabeth lived on the other side of a valley. One winter there was a very big flood, and a lot of houses down below Elizabeth’s were washed away. Her house was quite small, her husband was 25 and she had six children to support. Ten dollars a week, which was the total of their income, didn’t leave much for 26 . Expenses were always greater than Elizabeth had 27 , but she didn’t hesitate to help one of the families that lost everything in the flood and she 28 her house with them until it was 29 for them to move into their own houses.
Elizabeth’s friend was very 30 when she saw Elizabeth do this. She couldn’t understand why Elizabeth wanted to give 31 so much work and trouble to help others.
“Well,” Elizabeth 32 to her friend, “at the end of the First World War, a woman in the town where I then lived found herself 33 , because her husband had been killed in the war in Germany and she had a lot of 34 , as I have now.”
“The day before Christmas, this woman said to her children, ‘We won’t be able to have 35 presents for all of us. I’ll go and get it.’ She came back with a little girl who was in 36 clothes and crying in deep sorrow. The girl was an orphan(孤儿). ‘Here’s our 37 . She said to the children.
“The children were very 38 to have such a present. They 39 the little girl, and she grew up as their sister. I was that 40 present.”

I often read of incidents of misunderstanding or conflict. I'm left . Why do these people create mistrust and problems, especially with those from other ?
I was growing up in Kuala Lumpur in the early 1960s, children from different races and religions played and studied in harmony. At that time my family lived a stone's from Ismail's. And no one was bothered that Ismail was a Malay Muslim and I was an Indian Hindu—we just our differences. Perhaps, our elders had not filled our heads with unnecessary advice, well or otherwise.
We were nine when we became friends. During the school holidays, we 'd the countryside on our bicycles, hoping to the unexpected. At times Ismail would accompany my family as we made a rare shopping trip to town. We would be glad of his .
When I was twelve, my family moved to Johor. Ismail's family later returned to their village, and I touch with him.
One spring afternoon in 1983, I stopped a taxi in Kuala Lumpur. I my destination. The driver acknowledged my but did not move off. Instead, he looked at me. “Raddar?" he said, using my childhood nickname (绰号).I was astonished at being so addressed (称呼).Unexpectedly! It was Ismail! Even after two we still recognized each other. Grasping his shoulder, I felt a true affection, something to describe.
If we can allow our children to be without prejudice, they'll build friendships with people, regardless of race or religion, who will be their side through thick and thin. On such friendships are societies built and we can truly be, as William Shakespeare once wrote, “We happy few, We band of brothers".

In the process of my growing up I cannot remember hearing the words ‘‘I love you” from my father. When your father never says them to you when you are a child,it gets for him to say those words as he gets older. In fact,I could not honestly remember when I had last my love to him either.I decided to my pride and make the first .After some hesitation,in our next phone conversation I burst out the words.“Dad...I love you!”
There was a silence at the other end and he replied,“Well, same back at ya!”
I chuckled and said,“Dad,I know you love me,and when you are ,I know you will say what you want to say.’’
Fifteen minutes later my mother and nervously asked,“Paul,is everything okay?’’

I hear a lot of people talking about New Year’s resolutions(新年计划). Some say, “I can’t keep them and I never make resolutions.” Perhaps the real is that we have trouble changing. We get in our way of life and even if things aren’t good, they are familiar.
As the years go by, our resolutions seem to lose some . In spite of the fact that my own eagerness seems to , I still like the idea of making resolutions. It is the of not giving up that is important.
I think of the year like a carpet of new fallen snow that has not yet been by footprints or marks of any kind. It before us so perfect and beautiful, but it won’t remain that way for long. we know it, we must get out in the snow and make our own marks and tracks. Soon, we will see all kinds of and paths in the snow. We will see everything from , icy mud to the prints of snow angels made by children at play.
It’s all part of our . As we close out the old year, a new set of months lies ahead of us and we think, “Maybe, just maybe I can do .” Perhaps, this time, we can lose those pounds, a bad habit, improve our behavior, build a better relationship. Even though there are situations in our lives that can get us , we can look forward to beginning again and doing what we can do to our lives according to how we are able.
As the New Year comes around, what kind of marks will you make in the ?
