I have been consistently opposed to feeding a baby regularly. As a doctor, mother and scientist in child development I believe there is nothing to recommend it, from the baby's point of view.
Mothers, doctors and nurse alike have no idea of where a baby's blood sugar level lies. All we know is that a low level is harmful to brain development and makes a baby easily annoyed. In this state, the baby is difficult to calm down and sleep is impossible. The baby asks for attention by crying and searching for food with its mouth.
It is not just unkind but also dangerous to say a four-hourly feeding schedule will make a baby satisfied. The first of the experts to advocate a strict clock-watching schedule was Dr Frederic Truby King who was against feeding in the night. I've never heard anything so ridiculous. Baby feeding shouldn't follow a timetable set by the mum. What is important is feeding a baby in the best way, though it may cause some inconvenience in the first few weeks.
Well, at last we have copper-bottomed research that supports demand feeding and points out the weaknesses of strictly timed feeding . The research finds out that babies who are fed on demand do better at school at age 5, 7 , 11 and 14, than babies fed according to the clock. By the age of 8, their IQ(智商)scores are four to five percent higher than babies fed by a rigid timetable. This research comes from Oxford and Essex University using a sample(样本)of 10,419 children born in the early 1990s,taking account of parental education, family income, a child's sex and age, the mother's health and feeling style. These results don't surprise me. Feeling according to schedule runs the risk of harming the rapidly growing brain by taking no account of sinking blood sugar levels.
I hope this research will put an end to advocating strictly timed baby feeling practices. What does the author think about Dr King?
A.He is strict |
B.He is unkind |
C.He has the wrong idea. |
D.He sets a timetable for mothers |
The word copper-bottomed in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to _________
A.basic | B.reliable | C.surprising | D.interesting |
What does the research tell us about feeling a baby on demand?
A.The baby will sleep well. |
B.The baby will have its brain harmed. |
C.The baby will have a low blood sugar level. |
D.The baby will grow to be wiser by the age of 8. |
The author supports feeling the baby_______.
A.in the night |
B.every four hours |
C.whenever it wants food |
D.according to its blood sugar level |

古代伟大文明的象征a symbol of great ancient civilization
Recently our class had a heated discussion about
MAY 14 marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of the state of Israel(以色列). Many Israelis, however, are not in the mood to celebrate.
Looking at the damage to her neighbor's home from a Palestinian(巴勒斯坦) rocket, Batia Katar, a 17-year-old Israeli girl, was in tears. "We can't celebrate (Israel's) independence when things like this are happening," she said.
What is clear is that Israel is not a normal country. The country has a dramatic (戏剧性) history and ancient culture but has only officially existed for 60 years. Within hours after it was established in 1948, Israel was at war with its Arab neighbors for land. It won that time, and in 1956, 1967 and 1973, acquiring the West Bank, the Golan Heights, Gaza and east Jerusalem. For good or ill, Israelis can take pride in victories with so many countries. However, it occupied much more land than the United Nations agreed, which left local Palestinians homeless.
Different from all its neighbors in religion, Israel is also far more successful economically than its neighbors. Though, it gets a great amount of support from America and other Western countries. The country is now a world leader in many industries, such as IT and modern agriculture.
However, conflict exists, just like 60 years ago. And the signal of peace is as weak as ever. Palestinian militants (武装人员) have fired more than 7,000 missiles from Gaza, mainly at Sedro, killing 13 people. In the same period hundreds of Palestinian civilians in Gaza have died in Israeli military action.
In order to create peace, the world community hopes both sides accept and follow the Middle East peace plan. Optimists believe through Israeli-Palestinian negotiations there will finally be peace.
Both Israelis and Palestinians want to live in peace without explosions that remind them that they are living in a special but dangerous place. Why are many Israelis not in the mood to celebrate the both anniversary of the founding of the state of Israel? Because .
A.the government didn't organize it |
B.they are too busy to attend it |
C.it is dangerous to celebrate it |
D.conflicts and fights still exist |
The underlined word established in the fourth paragraph means .
A.defeated | B.founded | C.attacked | D.accepted |
Israel is not a normal country because .

B.within hours after its establishment, Israel was at war with its Arab neighbors for land |

D.all of the above |
Which statement about Israel is NOT true according to the passage?
A.It became a country in 1948. |
B.It is different from all its neighbors in religion. |
C.It is now a world leader in many industries, such as IT and modern agriculture. |
D.No country has supported it since it was founded. |
It can be inferred from the passage that .
A.it is still a question mark whether Israelis and Palestinians can live in peace |
B.Israel was created as a homeland for homeless Jews |
C.for good or ill, Israelis can take pride in victories with so many countries |

A few days ago I got a call from my old college friend whom I haven’t seen for a very long time. The topic, which was about all the good old times that we had changed to a touching story when he started talking about his father.
His father’s declining health made him stay at the hospital. Because of his illness, his father suffered from insomnia (失眠) and often talked to himself. My friend, who had not been able to sleep for a few days as he had to keep watching his father’s condition, became annoyed and told his father to keep silent and try to get some sleep. His father said that he really wanted to sleep well because he was very tired and told my friend to leave him alone in the hospital if he did not want to keep him company.
After his father finished talking, he fell unconscious (失去知觉). My friend was very sorry for speaking the ill words towards his father. My friend, whom I knew as a tough person, cried as a baby on the other end of the telephone. He said that from that moment on, he prayed every day, asking God to let his father wake up from his coma. He promised himself that whatever words came out from his father’s mouth after he regained his consciousness, he would gladly take them. His only hope for God was to give him a chance to rectify his past mistake.
Often, we complain when we have to accompany or watch over our parents for years, months, days, hours or even minutes. But do we realize that our parents keep us company and watch over us for as long as we (or they) live? From the day we were born to our adulthood, and even when deaths come to us, they are always at our side.
Imagine how sad our parents will be when they hear a seemingly innocent (天真无邪的)word of “no” come out from our mouths. We can make promises to ourselves that from now on there will be no more complaints that come out from our mouths when we have to watch over or accompany our parents. No more complaints come out from our mouths when we feel that our parents have treated us like little children. There are so many unlucky ones who have neither fathers nor mothers. They long to have the things that we most complain about, but never have them.
Actually, it takes only a second to think and light the lamp that will bring us to a place where peace is dwelling.Which of the following word can be used to describe the writer’s friend?
A.Sad | B.Sorry | C.Regretful | D.Pitiful |
What does the underlined word “rectify” mean in Para. 3?
A.put…right | B.recite…by heart |
C.realize | D.recognize |
What does the writer want to tell us in the passage?
A.Your parents will keep talking to themselves when they are old. |
B.Be good to your parents when you still have the chance. |
C.You will regret in your life if you don’t show your kindness to your parents. |
D.It is not easy to take good care of sick old parents. |
