The Mississippi is the major river system in the United States. The Yangtze is China’s longest river.
Although a world apart, the two waterways share conservation concerns that provide a cultural bridge between students in the United States and China, as well as from around the world.
The Mississippi flows almost 3,800 kilometers from a small lake in Minnesota, gathering the waters of 250 other rivers and streams before reaching the Gulf of Mexico.
In mid-May, as spring flowers began to open, about 41 students from a dozen colleges, mostly in the Midwest, explored a section of the river in Wisconsin and Iowa, to learn about the environment, and each other.
The students, from the U.S., China and around the world, came to join the River Spirit Exchange program.
The cross-cultural educational experience - set up by the University of Wisconsin, Madison-based Environment and Public Health Network for Chinese Students - focuses on the Mississippi and China’s longest river, the Yangtze.
This three day get-together featured story-telling, hiking, camping and canoeing, all part of a larger lesson about conservation projects that can be used on both the Yangtze and Mississippi.
While the students learned about the problems challenging the Mississippi and Yangtze, Jeb Barzen, a wildlife biologist, explained they should also learn about the importance of bridging each other’s culture.
The president of the Environment and Public Health Network for Chinese Students, Xiaojun Lu, said the Mississippi and Yangtze Rivers are uniting these students from opposite ends of the earth.
Organizers say the success and spirit of this first gathering of students will lead to other trips, including one down the Yangtze.Where is the source of the Mississippi?

The United States government wants to know what the public thinks about its findings on the safety of cloned animals．
The Food and Drug Administration says meat and milk from clones of adult animals are safe to eat．They called them “as safe to eat as the food we eat every day”．

Clones are still rare．They cost a lot and are difficult to produce．
The F．D．A．says most food from cloning is expected to come not from clones themselves，but from their sexually reproduced offspring．It says clones are expected to be used mostly as breeding animals to spread good qualities．
Public opinion studies show most Americans do not like the idea of food from cloned animals．But this research also shows the public knows little about cloning．
Cloning differs from genetic engineering．A cell taken from a so-called donor animal is grown into an embryo(胚胎)in the laboratory．Next，the embryo is placed into the uterus(子宫)of a female animal．If the process is successful，the pregnancy reaches full term and a genetic copy of the donor animal is born．

China news, Beijing, Feb. 9 – Housing price in China has always aroused heated discussions among property developers and ordinary Chinese. To many property developers and local government officials, housing price in China is still low compared with many developed countries. GUANGZHOU：Young migrant workers(民工)left home alone are more likely to commit crimes，according to a recent survey． Up to 90 percent of migrant workers serving sentences in southern Guangdong province are younger than 26,according to the survey conducted by the human rights research center of Guangzhou University．
“Most young migrant workers who commit crimes were left alone in their hometowns during their childhood，”said Xie Jianshe，deputy director of the research center． The survey polled 72 criminals of the so-called young generation of migrant workers in prisons and found about 80 percent experienced a “lonely childhood,” without parental care.
Xie attributed their crimes to inadequate education from families in their chil- dhood．“They usually don’t receive higher education．Inadequate education and less care from parents greatly harmed them，”Xie said．
Among those polled，up to 76 percent said they went to cities for “better life” right. After quitting school．“Their parents，also working in cities，don’t know how to care for and educate their children，”Xie said． Young migrant workers are usually involved in robbery，gang-related crime，according to the survey．
