Passage 3
A smile will tell people around you that you are a kind and friendly person. However, many people don’t smile because they think they have ugly teeth. For example, one of my classmates, Mike, doesn’t have very nice teeth, so that is why he seldom opens his mouth. He even says that he has lost confidence because of his teeth. So it is very important for us to look after our teeth. In fact, a lot of people have this problem. Some people inherit teeth problems from their parents, while others’ teeth are damaged because of bad habits, like heavy smoking, eating too much sugar or not brushing teeth often. If your teeth are in bad shape, you should see a dentist and ask for help. They can help improve your teeth and tell you how to take care of them.
Smiling can help you to feel more confidence and make people think of you as a more friendly person. If you want to keep healthy, you should not only smile but also laugh. An Indian doctor called Kataria said that young children should laugh about 30 times a day, while adults should laugh between 7 and 15 times a day. So please take this chance to smile and laugh now. What has made Mike lose his confidence?

Many people don’t smile because ______
A.they don’t like smiling | B.they think they are ugly |

A.A dentist can tell you how to improve your bad teeth. |
B.A dentist can help you to take care of your bad teeth. |
C.A dentist can tell you how to brush your teeth. |
D.Both A and B |
If you want to keep healthy, you had better _____
A.not smile often | B.laugh all the time |
C.neither smile nor laugh | D.smile and even laugh often |
How many times should a child laugh every day in doctor Kataria’s opinion
A.Either 20 or 30 times a day | B.Between 7 and 15 times a day |
C.Around 30 times a day | D.Only 30 times a day |
Anne’s best friend
Do you want a friend whom you could tell everything to, like your deepest feeling and thoughts? Or are you afraid of your friend would laugh at you, or would not understand what you are going through. Anne Frank wanted the first kind. She made her diary her best friend.
Anne lived in Amsterdam in the Netherlands during World War Ⅱ .Her family wad Jewish so they had to hide or they would be caught by German Nazis(纳粹). They hid away for twenty-five months before they were discovered. During that time the only true friends was her diary. She said, “I don’t want to set down a series of facts as most people do. But I want this diary itself to be my best friend, and I shall call my friend Kitty. Now read how she felt after being in the hiding place since July 1942.
Thursday 15th June 1944
Dear Kitty,
I wonder if it’s because I haven’t been able to be outdoors for so long that I’ve grown so crazy about everything to do with nature. I can well remember that there was a time when a deep blue sky, the songs of the bird, moonlight and flower could never have kept me spellbound. That’s changed since I came here.
…for example, one evening when it was so warm, I stayed awake on purpose until half past eleven in order to have a good look at the moon by myself. But as the moon gave far too much light, I didn’t dare open the window. Another time five month ago, I happened to be upstairs when at dusk when the window was open. I didn’t go downstairs until the window had to be shut. The dark, rainy evening, the wind, the thundering clouds held me entirely in their power; it was the first time in a year and a half that I‘d seen the night face to face….
…Sadly…I am only able to look at nature through dirty curtain before very dusty window. It’s no pleasure looking at nature through these any longer, because nature is one thing really must be experienced.
Yours,
Anne
Anne’s best friend was her diary, wasn’t it?
In Anne’s eye, what do people usually write in a diary?
About how long had Anne and her family been in the hiding place when she wrote this part of diary?
What did Anne want to do when she stayed awake on purpose until very late one evening?
Were Anne’s family finally caught by German Nazis?
If you were Anne, what would you like to do most in the hiding place? (In no more than 3 sentences)
High Housing Cost Makes Sub-Divided Flats
HONG KONG—Average home price have increased by73% since the end of 2008.This huge jump in home price has pushed more and more low income families into sub-divided flats.
What is a sub-divided flat? It is a flat that is divided into parts, so that it can house more than one family. Many sub-divided flats do not meet fire-safety standards (标准).For example, some flat owners have turned fire escape exits into part of their own rooms.
In June 2011, a fire happened in an old eight-storey building and left four people dead. That building was filled with sub-divided flats, some as small as 100 square feet. Many people believed that sub-divided flats were one of the causes for the accident. Since then, the government has paid more attention to the housing problem.
The best way to lower housing prices is to increase the number of flats; however, the best way may not be the easiest way. To lower housing prices, the government said that 20,000 new flats must be added every year for the next ten years.
Even if government could provide land for 20,000 flats a year, we would not know how much that would affect the housing market. One thing is for certain, Hong Kong’s housing problem will not soon go away and will be with us for a very long time.

According to the article, ________ can lower housing prices.

Question: First trip to the USA For my new job, I will travel to the United States next month and meet my American boss. This will be my first trip to the USA. I’m worried about correct business behavior and manners. My boss invited me to his home for dinner. Do you have any advice? Reply |

Re: First trip to the USA It’s a good idea to bring a small gift or something from your country. Don’t be surprised if your boss opens the gift right away. In the USA, people often open a gift when they receive it. In Korea, that is not polite, but it’s appropriate in the USA. Reply |

Re: First trip to the USA Many Americans are very informal at home. One time I went to dinner at the home of an American business partner, I was surprised that everyone stood and talked in the kitchen while the husband and wife cooked dinner. Besides, unlike in Korea, everyone took part in the dinner table conversation, even the man’s wife and children. Reply |

Re: First trip to the USA I agree with Lee. I was surprised that American men often cook and that both the husband and wife come to dinner table and talk. You probably won’t speak about business during dinner, so my advice is to know some good topics of conversation. For example, you can talk about travel, food, music, or sports. Of course, it’s good to ask about your boss’s family. But it’s not polite to question about age, salary, religion, or politics. |
