Reading is the key to school success and, like any skill, it takes practice. A child learns to walk by practicing until he no longer has to think about how to put one foot in front of the other. An excellent sportsman practices until he can play quickly, correctly and without thinking. Educators call it “automaticity (自动性)”.
A child learns to read by sounding out the letters and finding the meaning of the words. With practice, he stumbles less and less, reading by the phrase (短语). With automaticity, he doesn’t have to think about the meaning of words, so he can give all his attention to the meaning of the text.
It can begin as early as first grade. In a recent study of children in Illinois schools, Alan Rossman of Northwestern University found that automatic readers in the first grade not only read almost three times as fast as the others, but also got better results in exams.
According to Rossman, the key to automaticity is the amount (数量) of time a child spends reading, not his IQ. Any child who spends at least 3.5 to 4 hours a week reading books, magazines or newspapers will probably reach automaticity. It can happen if a child turns off TV just one night for reading at home.
You can test yourself by reading something new which is suitable (适合) for your level. If you read aloud with expression, with a sense of the meaning of the sentences, you probably are an automatic reader. If you read brokenly, one word at a time, without expression or meaning, you need more practice.
“Reading is the key to school success” means that reading            .

A.helps school develop faster
B.is a key to a successful school

D.can improve students’ learning results

Children with “automaticity” can read faster because they            .

B.do not have to think while reading
C.read by themselves without any help
D.pay attention to the meaning of the text

Rossman tells that any child who             will possibly be an automatic reader.

A.turns off TV one night 4 weeks
B.reads books by the word quickly
C.spends an hour reading every day
D.gets the same grades as others in exams

The underlined word “stumble” in the passage means “          ” in Chinese.

A.结结巴巴地读 B.全神贯注地读
C.心不在焉地读 D.声情并茂地读

The best title for the passage is “          ”.

When the weather is hot, you go to a lake or an ocean. When you are near a lake or an ocean, you feel cool. Why? The sun makes the earth hot, but it cannot make the water hot. Though the air over the earth becomes hot, the air over the water stays cool. The hot air over the earth goes up, and then the cool air over the water moves in and takes the air near a lake or an ocean, you feel the cool air when it moves around you. You feel the wind and the wind makes you cool.
Of course, scientists cannot answer all of our questions. If we ask “Why is the ocean full of salt?” scientists will say that the salt comes from rocks. When a rock gets very hot or very cool, it breaks, and rain falls into the cracks(裂缝). The rain then carries the salt into the earth and the rivers. The rivers carry the salt into the ocean. But then we ask “What happens to the salt in the ocean?” The ocean does not get saltier every year. Scientists are not sure about the answer to the question.
We have known a lot of things on the earth, but there is still a long way to go about the study of our world.
Judge the following sentence true (A) or false (B) according to what you read. (判断正A误B)
Scientists can answer all our questions.
Now scientists know what makes people feel cool near a lake or an ocean in summer.
Scientists say that the salt in the ocean comes from rivers and lakes.
A rock breaks when rain falls.
Scientists are not sure about some questions because there are still many new things for them to
know.

How important is your appearance(外貌)?Although everyone wants to be good-looking ,are beautiful people always happier people? For example, it must be a problem to be a really beautiful woman, because some people may be more interested in looking at you than talking to you. They think of you as a picture rather than a person. There are also some people who think that women who are exceptionally(格外地)pretty and men who are particularly handsome must be stupid. They believe that only unattractive(无魅力的)people can be intelligent.
On the other hand, no one wants to be really ugly, and have a face that even your mother doesn’t want to look at ;and no one wants to be plain, either-that is ,to be neither attractive nor unattractive ,and have a face that is easily forgotten.
Being attractive is like being rich it can help you find happiness, but it doesn’t always make you happy. So maybe the best thing is not to worry too much about how you look, but simply try to be an interesting person .For interesting people have interesting faces, and interesting faces are almost always attractive.
根据短文内容,判断正(T)、误(F)。
Everyone wants to be attractive.
No one likes to talk to a very pretty woman.
Some people think that handsome men are unintelligent.
A plain face is easily forgotten.
The more beautiful someone is, the richer he/she is.
