You may know that more people drink coffee than tea around the world. And that, after oil, it is the second biggest traded commodity(商品). You may also know that the drink comes from beans which are first roasted and then ground(研磨). But what else do you know about this popular drink?
It is said that the story of coffee started with an Ethiopian goatherd(牧羊人)named Kaldi. One day Kaldi was surprised to see that his goats were behaving(举止) very strangely. Instead of grazing(吃草) quietly, they were jumping around, almost dancing. He also noticed some red “cherries” from a plant that the goats were eating. He tried some himself and was surprised by the feeling of happiness and excitement. He felt like dancing too!
But it wasn’t used as a drink at first. It was used as food. The coffee berries, mixed with animal fat, were used by monks(和尚) to stay awake during long hours of prayer(祷告). From Ethiopia, coffee was later cultivated(培育) in Yemen and the first hot drink was developed there around AD 1000. Three centuries later,Coffee houses appeared in Cairo and Mecca.
For many many years the plants were protected safely. But some beans were smuggled(偷运) out of Arabia and taken to India. In the 17th century, coffee was soon grown in a new continent. From India to Indonesia, a century later the beans were once again smuggled to Brazil. Brazil is now the largest coffee producer in the world.
It was the caffeine(咖啡因) that made the goats dance and kept the monks awake. Although it is found in other soft drinks and tea, coffee has the most caffeine. In the short term(短期), a couple of cups of coffee can prevent fatigue and delay sleep. But several cups a day, every day, can cause anxiety(焦虑) and restlessness(坐立不安).

Mr father woke me up early one summer morning when I was fourteen and announced(宣布): “Get up, you’re going with me to cut the grass in the garden.”
The idea that my father thought I was old enough to help him in his business made me feel proud and excited. From sunup to sundown, my father, my younger brother and I worked in the large garden. By the end of the day I was too tired to say a word but I felt good. This was my first time to help my father in his business. I got $ 6 for my work that day.
One day my father found some leaves I had missed and pulled me aside. “Take away these leaves!” he said, “and don’t make me have to tell you to do it again.” The message was clear. Today I value(珍视) the importance of doing a job well the first time. It will never fail to impress(给……留下印象) the person you are working for.
After two years, my father told me and my brother that he felt we were old enough to cut the grass by ourselves. Every Saturday during my last two years of high school, we set off early in the morning with the same strong wish we had gained while working under our father.
Looking after the garden was neither exciting nor high paying, but that didn’t matter. It taught me that any job was a good job and that whatever I was paid was more than I had before.
A newspaper reporter once asked me how someone could possibly live with hard work and low pay. “If you’re only thinking about hard work and money, you probably don’t want to do any better than you are doing.” I answered. In every job, from cutting the grass to washing dishes, I’ve learned much. I’ve learned something that helps me in my next job.
If you work hard enough, you can learn from any job you do.

Dear Sir or Madam,
Last Thursday, I traveled on the 8:00 a.m. train from Glasgow to London King’s Cross and I was quite angry with the service of your company.
The train didn’t come on time and it was forty minutes late when it left Glasgow. A man at the station said sorry to us, but he didn’t give us any reasons for the delay (误点) . We then had further delays on the way and had to wait another thirty minutes. As a result, I missed my plane from London to Frankfurt and had to wait for several hours.
What’s more, the service on the train was also very poor. The trip took more than five hours. Unluckily, we could buy nothing but some soft drinks on the train. Worst of all, something was wrong with the air conditioning (空调系统) and it got hotter and hotter in the train. Before we reached King’s Cross, the temperature was over 40°C.
Because of your poor service, I feel you should pay me compensation (赔偿).
I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully
David Roberson

There are several ways you can find out about the countries and places you wish to visit. You can talk to friends who have traveled to the places, you can go and see a colour film about them, or you can read a travel book.
It seems that there are three kinds of travel books. The first are those that give a personal, subjective(主观的) idea of travels which their writer has got himself. These books can be useful if the writers share their traveling experiences with others. The second kind are those books which give objective(客观的) information of things to be done and seen. If a cultured person has written such a book about the facts of a place, then it is more useful. The third kind are those books which are called “a guide” to some place or other. If they are good, they will describe and explain the place in detail. Like the first kind , they can be interesting and exciting, but their main purpose is to help the reader plan his travel in the most practical way.
Whatever kind of travel book you choose, you must make sure that the book does not describe everything as interesting, exciting or fantastic. You must also keep an open eyes on its date of publication(出版) because travel is very practical matter and many things change quickly in the 21st century. Finally, you should make sure that it’s easy to find the useful information for you travel.

A.travel maps B.travel books
C.travel films D.travel places
