Nora, a 17-year-old American, notices that when she has to do a paper for school and researches it on the Internet, she rarely reads a whole page and does deep reading. “I’ll read the beginning of a paragraph and then I'll skip(跳过) the rest,” she says.
While Nora's mother, Martha, loves sitting down with a good book and reading carefully, her daughter may be the wave of the future.
“Deep reading”, or slow reading, is a process in which people think carefully while they read. With most, that means slowing down --- even stopping and rereading a page or paragraph to really understand what the author is trying to say.
Last summer, Google CEO Eric Schmidt said he was concerned about what he sees as a decline(衰退)in slow reading. Instant messages and 140-character tweets(微博)appear to be reducing out ability to concentrate on a single idea or theme of a book, he told Foreign Policy Magazine.
It's easy to forget the benefits of deep reading in an age when anything worth doing is done fast. Experts warn that without deep reading, it is impossible to be an educated person of the world, a knowledgeable voter or even an imaginative thinker.
“If you want to have a deep relationship with a text and understand a complex idea, then slow reading is a preferred style. It is good for pleasure, too. It is not a rushed experience and you can lose yourself in a text,” said Canadian writer John Miedema, the author of the book Slow Reading.
US' Ohlone College English professor Cynthia Lee Katona says reading is a highly social activity that builds the mind and social connections. If you read, she says, you simply know more and have more to talk about with friends, partners and people you know.
Deep reading can also take a reader on a trip around the world even if they are sitting in a living room armchair, Katona says. Also, deep reading helps people develop thinking, writing and conversation skills.
“If you like beautiful things, authors put words together that are really beautiful and expressive,” she says. “If you want to write well--- and there are lots of reasons to express yourself clearly --- you should read.”

Michael Jackson was born on August 29, 1958, in Gary, Indiana, and he was the eighth of the ten children. Michael’s father, Mr Jackson realized that his sons had a lot of talents, and he knew he could train them to become fine musicians. In those days, there were lots of music groups and some of them were very good. He knew if his sons were different from others, they would have to be the best. Their group later became the Jackson Five. Michael Jackson was the lead singer of the five in the team.
Practice makes perfect. And the Jackson boys practiced! Soon the group was much better than others. When the Jacksons took their first professional (专业的) job, their total pay was only five dollars! But they kept on. They played at important parties. They entered big competitions. They worked at various clubs. Five Jackson boys first performed together at a talent show when Michael was six,and they walked off with the first prize. Then name of this group began to get around.

For the following years, Michael was always on the top among the popular singers. One million records of his were sold in New Zealand, which has only a total population of three million.
When Michael was eighteen, he entered another field of his acting career. “I plan to star in movies,” he told his friends, “but of course, my first love is music”. Michael wrote a lot of his own songs. Whatever he did, it worked! Still, with all his success, Michael managed to keep his head calm. “I just do a different job from other people,” he said, “but it doesn’t make me think I’m better than other people,” For anyone who wants to be successful, the road to success is a long hard one to travel.
In 1994, Michael married Lisa Marie, but the marriage ended in 1996. He married Debbie Rowe the same year and had two children. The couple never lived together after 1999. Jackson had three children named Prince Michael I, Paris Michael and Prince Michael II. Michael Jackson died after suffering a heart attack. I used to watch those Chinese kungfu films during the 80s and 90s. I used to love seeing kungfu actors make things far away with their fists, but at that time I knew it was not true. However, after I watched the video, I changed my idea. The video went very popular in China recently. It showed that the young man named Zhang Feng put out 15 candles in a line three meters away with air or energy generated by his flying fists.
You may say it’s not true, and you’re not the only one. But the young man actually invited two reporters from The Zhengzhou Evening News newspaper into his home to see his act and then film him doing it. The two reporters tried their best, but were only able to put out one of the 15 candles set 10 cm apart, and even blowing air didn’t put out all the candles. Zhang Feng, on the other hand, put them all out just by throwing punches. The two reporters were in awe and couldn’t explain how he did it. They said that Zhang Feng was a great Shaolin master.

Have you ever stayed in a hotel? Most Chinese hotels often provide guests with things like disposable(一次性的)toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo and slippers. Many guests like the idea because they don't have to bring their own. But if you travel to Beijing, remember to bring your own things. Starting from June, some hotels in Beijing will no longer provide guests with these disposables. They want to ask people to use less disposable things.
Many disposable things are made of plastic. People throw them away after only using them once. It is a waste of natural resources and is very bad for the environment. In Beijing, people throw away about 19,000 tons of plastic bags and 1, 320 tons of plastic lunch bowls every year! Plastic can take between 100 and 400 years to break down. So the less plastic we throw out, the better. So, wherever you travel, bring your own things and use them again and again.
Back at home and school, you can also do something to make our world a better place. Try to do these things in your daily life: Use cloth shopping bags, not plastic ones. After using a plastic bag, wash it clean and let it dry. Then you can use it over and over again. Do not use paper cups. At your school canteen(食堂), use your own bowl and chopsticks instead of disposable ones.
