I was the typical“I can't”child-whatever my mother told or asked me to do was immediately followed by my cry,“I can't.”As a result, very few tasks or goals that I set out to achieve were ever completed.
One evening,my mother called me into the family room.“I want you to read this article,”Mother began.“It's about Marlo Thomas. She tells how a simple poem that she was forced to learn by her father changed her life·She went from saying‘I can't’to‘I can’·According to this article, she was able to reorganize her life and her career by learning the principles(原则)in the poem.”
I took the small magazine from Mother and looked down at the pages. There was Marlo-my idol. Beside her photo was the poem my mother had spoken of,a simple poem entitled,“I Can”.“I want you to memorize that poem,”Mother said firmly.“Mama,”I belly-ached.“I can't learn that poem. It's too long.”
“It's not too long and you can learn it.1 want you to know it perfectly by this time tomorrow,”said my mother. Unwillingly,I went back to my bedroom with the magazine. With a heavy heart,I threw myself into the bed and began my task.
“Can't is a word that is the enemy to ambition,”I began.I repeated the line.I repeated it again and again.“An enemy ambush to shatter your will…”I continued the process until I proudly recited the poem the following evening. It has now become my principle.Marlo 1 homas did not know me,but her story forever changed my life.
Saying “I can” helped me to get through the worst moments of my life: Saying “I can” encouraged me to complete things I would have otherwise seen as out of my reach. A simple poem learned at seven is a poem that will support me to seventy-seven,maybe even longer. One evening my mother asked me to ,

Everybody has heard of fast food, but have you ever eaten slow food?Well, you might just want
to try it. Here are some Americans talking about slow food.
Karen:I’m very excited because I start to run my own business—a new snack bar called Good Food. It is special because we only have slow food. What is slow food? Well, it is more than just healthy food. Show food is also about growing food in a good way so that the environment is not hurt. Come and try my food—I think you’ll like it.
Mark: I’m a farmer from California. I grow food in a special way—a way that is better for the environment. I sell a lot of my food to the restaurants and snack bars in the city. And I also visit schools a lot and try to teach children about food, for some kids think that fast food is the only food.
Joshua: I had the best lunch with my friend Susi in the slow food snack bar last Thursday, I had the great tomato and cheese salad—much better than a pizza and a Coke. A farmer came to our school to tell us about slow food . which I had never heard of before. And now I want to find out more about it on the Internet.. I think it’s really a good idea. It was a winter morning, just a couple of weeks before Christmas. While most people were warming up their cars, Trevor, my husband, had to get up early to ride his bike four kilometers away from home to work.On arrival, he parked his bike outside the back door as he usually does. After putting in 10 hours of work, he returned to find his bike gone.
The bike,a black 18-speed Kona, was our only transport.Trevor used it to get to work, putting in 60-hour weeks to support his young family. And the bike was also used to get everyday things, saving us from having to walk long distances from where we live.
I was so sad that someone would steal our bike that I wrote to the newspaper and told them our story.Shortly after that, several people in our area offered to help. One stranger even bought a bike, then called my husband to pick it up.Once again my husband had a way to get to and from his job. It really is an honor that a stranger would help someone they have never met before.
People say that a smile can be passed from one person to another, but acts of kindness from strangers are even more so.This experience has had a spreading influence in our lives because it strengthened our faith in humanity(人性的信念) as a whole. And it has influenced us to be more mindful of ways we,too, can share with others. No matter how big or how small, an act of kindness shows that someone cares. And the results can last forever. When their bike was stolen?
A. On Christmas Day.
B. On the way to work.
