Xia Ming was worried about his study, so he wrote a letter to a magazine.
Dear editors, I’m a slow student in my class. Most of my classmates are much better than me. So I get very stressed out. It’s difficult to keep on working hard and it’s really not fun. And I think although I spend much time studying for the tests. I can’t get good grades. My father gives me some help sometimes. He tells me not to worry about it. But what do you think I should do? Weekday mornings are very busy for US middle school students. When your school doesn’t have a bus, and you live too far away to walk, you need a carpool (拼车). A carpool is a group of people sharing the responsibility (责任) of driving to school in the morning. There are usually four or five kids in a carpool and their parents take turns to drive the kids in their cars.
Someone’s car smells like wet dogs. Some kids get to eat desserts (甜点) for breakfast and some parents shout so much that all you try to do is to stay quiet and go unnoticed. When your mom or dad drives the carpool, your classmates get a close-up look at how strange your parents can be. It might be your first sociological (社会学) study and your first time to work with others.
Teamwork is really important in the carpool because nobody wants to make everyone else late. It’s a great lesson in responsibility. Imagine (想象) sitting in the car outside of a classmate’s house, watching the clock and counting the seconds. Then you start to understand how your carpool friends might feel when you are still inside the house at 7:48. You really begin to learn all your real life lessons just moments before the start of school—in the carpool. What is a carpool?
A.Parents take turns to drive their kids to school. |
B.Parents drive kids to schools on their way to work. |

A reader wrote to say that she was feeling left out at break because her best friend wasn’t around. Here’s our advice to her—and to all kids who feel lonely sometimes.
It’s hard when a best friend isn’t around—maybe because she moved to a different school or a different class. You may feel lonely at break or lunchtime. You want to have new friends, but how do you make them? Maybe it seems that everybody else already has their friends. But remember, there’s always room for more friends.
Start by looking around your classroom—think about which kids you’d like to play with at break. Look for chances to say hi to them, smile, and be friendly. Offer to share something or express your appreciation(欣赏)to them. Invite someone to play with you or say “Do you want to sit here?” in the lunchroom. When you’re at break, walk over to kids you want to play with and say “Hi, can I play, too?” or just join in.
If you find it difficult to do this or if you’re feeling shy, ask your teacher to help you make new friends. Teachers are usually pretty good at matching up friends. The best way to make friends is to be a friend. Be kind, be friendly, share, say nice things, offer to help—and pretty soon, you’ll have one, or two, or even more new friends.
You might still miss that special best friend. But when you see each other, you can share something you didn’t have before she left: You can introduce her to your new friends! This text is written for ____________.
A.teachers | B.parents |
C.students | D.visitors |
The expression “feeling left out” means “ ____________” in Chinese.
A.受冷落 | B.被调侃 | C.挨批评 | D.遭攻击 |

A.they miss their old friends a lot |
B.they have no time to stay with others |
C.teachers know who wants a new friend |
D.they are shy or not good at making friends |

Zhang Lili: The most beautiful teacher in China
Zhang Lili is a teacher at No.19 Middle School in the city of Jiamusi, Heilongjiang province. These days, many people think she is the most beautiful teacher in China, because she saved her students from a traffic accident (交通事故) on May 8, 2012.
On that day, Zhang and her two students were crossing the road outside the school gate when a bus suddenly lost control (控制) and ran fast towards them. Zhang pushed both students out of the way, but she herself was hit (被撞倒) by the bus. As a result, the 29-year-old teacher lost her legs.
The principal of No. 19 Middle School, Jiamusi City, said, "Zhang is a great teacher in our school. She’s also the most popular teacher among the students. For the students, she is like a sister. They call her Beautiful Sister. After hearing about this accident, all the students in her class cried." But Zhang is more than a teacher and sister to the 53 students in her class. She cares about their studies and even their lives.
Zhang’s bravery and kindness moved (感动) a lot of people in China. Many people visited her and sent her beautiful flowers and cards. They all hope she can get better soon and live happily for the rest of her life.

When the bell rings, every student takes out an iPad. The light from the screens makes their young faces pretty and lively. That’s what happens every day at my school in the US. We use iPads in class.
I felt surprised and excited when I got an iPad the first day I arrived at the school. But it was not free. I spent about $100 to rent (租) it for three years.
Every iPad at my school has a special learning system (系统)
called Focus. Teachers put their teaching materials like textbooks and PPTs on it. When we have classes, we enter the system and download (下载) the materials with our iPads.
It makes the classes interesting and efficient (高效的). For example, a few weeks ago, we learned about London in the UK. Our teacher prepared a video in which we saw many places of interest in London. We could not only watch the video, but also see the words at the same time. Because of the video, I know more about the city.
We also do our homework with iPads. We can know how well we do our homework right after we submit (提交) our homework.
However, there are still some bad points about learning with iPads. Some of my classmates play games or surf the Internet in class.
I believe the key to use iPads well is to have good self-control (自制), isn’t it? In the writer’s class, every student ________.
A.gets a free iPad from the teacher |
B.plays games on iPads in each class |
C.shares an iPad with their classmates in class |
D.rents an iPad to use at school for three years |
The underlined word “Focus” is ________.
A.a special learning system |
B.PPTs and videos |
C.teachers’ teaching materials |
D.the name of the iPad at school |
When students are learning with iPads, they should not ________.
A.play games |
B.watch some videos |
C.download the materials |
D.submit the homework |
According to the example in Paragraph 4, we learn that ________.
A.students don’t like to use iPads in class |
B.iPads are not useful when having classes |
C.students use iPads to watch videos every class |
D.iPads make the classes interesting and efficient |
What does the writer think of using iPads in school?
A.Students should use iPads as often as possible. |
B.To use iPads in school is very bad for students’ eyes. |
C.Students should have good self-control when using iPads. |
D.All students should use iPads to surf the Internet in class. |
