College was the best of times and the worst of times for me. I met the best friends of my life, had 21 experiences, but I also folded under more 22 than I ever had to deal with before. 23 bad grades, I ended up being asked to take a semester off at the end of the first semester of my senior year.
So I went back home to 24 with my father and stepmother. To their credit, they understood me and were very cool about my coming back. I felt their 25 from the moment I walked in the door. They 26 to let me feel like a failure.
One morning not long after I had come home, my father woke me up saying that my stepmother 27 on the kitchen floor. I went downstairs trying to perform CPR on her 28 it was too late. She was already dead of a massive heart attack.
I’ll never 29 the look on my father’s face when he was given the official news of her passing. I knew at that moment that I had to be 30 because he needed someone to lean on. It was as if our roles had 31 and I was being the protective parent while he took the time to 32 .
I guess the lesson I took from it is that even in our 33 moments we can still be of help to someone who is 34 something much harder. It’s so easy to close ourselves off to the things going on around us, and 35 feel that we are the only ones 36 . Helping someone else could actually help us 37 ourselves.
Needlessly to say I went back to college the next semester, and I studied harder and got my 38 . My father and I developed a bond that was 39 closer than it already was, and I have a much better ability to keep 40 times in perspective.(适当地)

One year ago, I traveled 15,000 kilometers from Australia to the US. I am from a beachside town in the 16 of Sydney, and thought there would be almost no 17 differences between my home country and my18 . I was surprised at how wrong I was, and at 19 different the two countries could be.
The United States is 20in almost every aspect. The buildings are gigantic (巨大的) and so are the people who 21 and work in them. At mealtimes, the portions (份额) often 22 to me to be big enough for three or four people. I once 23a baked potato which turned out to be bigger than my head! This was a big 24 for me.
The longer I spent in the US, the more I started to 25 smaller differences like the culture of 26in restaurants. In Australia we don’t tend to give a tip 27 the service has been really excellent. In the US you tip for 28 everything, even at the hairdresser. Waiters and shop assistants 29 to be given 15 percent of the bill, although in places 30 New York or Washington DC, a tip can be as much as 20 percent.
31 , I also became more wary (谨慎的) of believing the stereotypes (成见) I had heard at home as I traveled. Not all Americans are ignorant of geography, for example.
Despite this, certain stereotypes about places did seem to 32 true for me. There is an immense (强烈的) sense of speed in New York. Everyone 33 to and fro, and very seldom takes time to 34 the moment. This is very different from the Australian lifestyle. Australians are laid back. Even in a major city like Sydney, we “Aussies” take time to “stop and smell the roses”---very different from our American counterparts.
Navigating (驾驭) the culture divide between Australia and the US was challenging at times. But I took up that 35 and learned a lot from it. It was an adventure.

I walked into the grocery store not particularly interested in buying something. The sorrow of 1 my husband of 37 years was still too painful. And this grocery store held so many sweet 2 . Bob often came with me and almost every time he'd 3 to go off and look for something special. I'd always see him walking down the walkway 4 the three yellow roses in his hands. Bob knew I loved yellow roses. With a heart 5 with pain, I came to the meat shelf, I searched for the 6 small steak and remembered how Bob had loved his steak.
Suddenly a woman came beside me. She was in a soft green dress. I 7 as she picked up a large pack of T-bones, 8 them in her basket, hesitated, and then put them back. She saw me watching her and she smiled. "My husband loves T-bones, but 9 , at these prices, I don't know."
"My husband passed away eight days ago," I told her. "Buy him the steaks. And value every 10 you have together."
She smiled and I saw the feeling in her 11 as she placed the package in her basket and 12 away. I turned and pushed my cart forward too. Several minutes later I saw first the green suit and then 13 the pretty lady coming to me. In her arms she carried something. On her face was the 14 smile I had ever seen.
As she came closer, I saw what she held and 15 welled down. "These are for you, " she said and placed three beautiful yellow roses in my arms. She placed a gentle kiss on my cheek, then smiled again. I wanted to tell her what the roses 16 , but still unable to speak. I watched as she walked away as tears clouded my 17 . I looked down at the beautiful roses and found it almost 18 . How did she know?
Suddenly the 19 seemed so clear. I wasn't alone. "Oh, Bob, you haven't 20 me, have you?" I whispered, with tears in my eyes. He was still with me, and she was his angel.

Night after night, my mother came to my bed, even long after my childhood years. She would 21 down and push my long hair out of the way, and then kiss my forehead. I don’t remember when it first started 22 me-her hands pushing my hair that way, for they felt work-worn and rough 23 my young skin. Finally , one night, I shouted out at her, “Don’t do that any more-your hands are too rough!” she made no 24 and left quietly. But never again did my mother do it with that familiar expression of her 25 .
With the passing years, my 26 returned to that night time after time. By then I 27 my mother’s hands and her goodnight kiss. Sometimes the incident seemed very 28 , sometimes far away, but always it was 29 in the back of my mind.
The years have passed, and I’m not a little girl any more. Mom is in her seventies, and those hands I once 30 to be so rough are still doing things for me and my family.
Now, Mom no longer has Dad and lives 31 . One night on Thanksgiving Eve, I found myself 32 to her house to spend the night with her. As I slept in the bedroom of my youth, a familiar hand hesitantly ran across my face to 33 the hair from my forehead. Then a 34 , ever so gently , touched my forehead. I burst into tears.
In my memory, thousands of times, I 35 the night my young voice complained. Catching Mom’s hand in hand, I told her how 36 I was for that night. I thought she’d remember 37 I did. But Mom didn’t know what I was talking about. She had already forgotten and 38 long ago.
That night, I fell asleep with a new 39 for my gentle mother and her caring hands. And the guilt that I had carried around for so long was 40 to be found.
