A few years ago, when I was about 14,I went out for a walk 31 a rainy summer day. I saw a man 32 small, dirty colthes. He had 33umbrella, and he was picking bottles out of bushes. When he found 34 ,he smiled and put it in his big bag. I thought,“I wish there 35 some way to help him. Well, I could give him my umbrella.” Then I walked to him 36 gave the umbrella to him.“You need this more than I 37 .” The man took it with 38 big smile on his face and said,“Thank you! Thank you!” And then I walked away 39 good, I turned around and saw him 40a lot more, even though he was still picking bottles from bushes. “It was just an umbrella.” I thought, not 41 that it was the kindness 42 made him happy.
A few weeks later I was walking on a sunny day, and 43 the same man with the same clothes, 44 the same big bag 45 of bottles. The only 46 was that my umbrella was right in the corner, looking47 he cherished(爱护) it. It was so clean.
It didn’t 48 that I couldn’t give the man a house and a job and I only did I was able to do. But 50made someone else happier, so that was enough.

My neighbor Jennifer is blind, but you’d never know it. She makes such good use of her other 36 , including her "sixth sense", that she hardly gives the impression that she has 37 anything. Jennifer looks after her children much like the rest of us, 38 that she doesn’t push too hard on them, 39 really benefit a lot from her relaxed attitude. She knows when to clean the house, and she moves around so fast that 40 often don't realize she's blind.
I 41 this the first time after my six-year-old daughter, Kayla, went to play there. When Kayla came home, she was very 42 about her day. She told me they had baked cookies, played games and done art projects. But she was 43 excited about her finger-painting project.
“Mom, guess what?” said Kayla, all smiles. “I learned how to 44 colors today! Blue and red make purple, and yellow and blue make green! And Jennifer 45 with us”. To my great 46 , my child had learnt about color from a blind friend! Then Kayla continued, “Jennifer told me my 47 showed joy, pride and a sense of accomplishment(成就感). She really _48 what I was doing!” Kayla said she had never known how good finger paints felt 49 Jennifer showed her how to paint without looking at her paper.
I realized Kayla didn't know that Jennifer was blind. It had just never 50in conversation. When I told my daughter that Jennifer was blind, she was 51 for a moment. At first, she didn't believe me. “But Mommy, Jennifer knew exactly what was in my picture!” Kayla 52 . And I knew my child was 53 because Jennifer had listened to Kayla describe her art work. Jennifer had also heard Kayla's 54in her work.
We were silent for a minute. Then Kayla said slowly, “You know, Mommy, Jennifer really did ‘see’ my picture. She just used my 55 .”
Indeed, she uses a special type of “vision” that all mothers have.

I've always loved pigeons(鸽子). Some years ago I managed to persuade my wife to let me buy a few and start 16 them myself. They cost a lot of money and so it spoilt(破坏) our 17 a bit, but my wife never actually stopped me so I 18 carried on. I learnt so much about them that I could 19 a good racer anywhere and I bought some beauties. My pigeons won some top races, and I even began to make a bit of 20 .
You see, people are prepared to pay big prices if they get to know that your pigeons are21 big prizes.
My wife had been changing her 22 to the pigeons over the last year or two anyway. She was quite 23 of all the prizes we’d won. Then there was the travelling, which she liked. You see some one has to take the pigeons a 24 way off and set them free. Some of the 25 were really nice. I never travelled. I used to like to wait at home and see them come in. They’ve got this wonderful sense of 26 , which can bring them back home so quickly. They’d flown hundreds of miles sometimes 27 storms or against strong winds. And there they’d come, tiny white birds against the great 28 . Then I'd watch them 29 round and come down onto the landing shelf. I'd look at my watch and think, “My goodness, that’s a good 30 . ”And I'd take off the little leg ring and push it through the machine to 31 what time he’d arrived. Then my wife would 32 up and say, “Has he arrived yet?” Then we would work out if we’d won 33 .
Then last year we had a 34 ! All of them got some sort of flu and 35 . It was terrible. I had to burn them all. We lost a fortune, of course.

Though there is much to be concerned about, there is far, far more for which to be thankful. Though life’s goodness can at times be overshadowed (黯然失色), it is 41
outweighed.
For every single act that is senselessly destructive, 42 are thousands more small, quiet acts of love, 43 and sympathy. For every person who seeks to hurt, there are many, many more who 44 their lives to helping and to healing.
There is a goodness to life that 45 be denied. In the most remarkable views and in the smallest details, look 46 , because that goodness always comes shining through. There is no 47 to the goodness of life. It 48 more abundant(充裕的) each time you feel it. The 49 you experience and appreciate the goodness of life, the more there is to be lived.
Even 50 the cold winds blow and the world seems to be 51 in foggy shadows, the goodness of life lives 52 . Open your eyes, open your heart, 53 you will see that goodness is everywhere. Though the goodness of life 54 at times to suffer hardships, it is always going on there. For in the 55 moment, it becomes more clear that life is a 56 treasure. And so the goodness of 57 is made even stronger by the very things that would go against it.
Time and time again when you feared it was 58 forever, you found that the goodness of life was really only a / an 59 away. Around the next corner, inside every moment, the goodness of life is there to surprise and 60 you.
