Do you see many signs around you? Do you know the signs are an important part of our daily life? They can be in pictures or in words to give people information. What do people think are good signs? If you are thinking about making signs for others, what should you know?
The most important thing is that signs should be simple and easy to understand. It is important to use clear language. On the other hand, the words should be easy to write and you just need to write down what you want to do. “Keep off the grass” is a very good example. It means “Don’t touch or walk on the grass”.
Nowadays, there is a saying that “A picture paints a thousand words”. Perhaps that’s why we are seeing more and more signs in pictures, or a combination of pictures and words. However, that’s the difficult part, because picture signs may have different meanings in different countries. First, a good sign should be ____.
A.clear | B.beautiful | C.funny | D.interesting |
The writer uses “A picture paints a thousand words” to show that ____.
A.a word sign is as easy as a picture sign to make |

We know that many animals do not stay in one place. Birds, fish and other animals move from one place to another at a certain time. They move for different reasons: most of them move to find food more easily, but others move to get away from places that are too crowded.
When cold weather comes, many birds move to warmer places to find food. Some fishes give birth in warm water and move to cold water to feed. The most famous migration (迁移) is probably the migration of fish, which is called “salmon”. This fish is born in fresh water but it travels many miles to salt water. There it spends its life. When it is old, it returns to its birthplace in fresh water. Then it gives birth and dies. In northern Europe, there is a kind of mouse. They leave their mountain homes when they become too crowded. They move down to the low land. Sometimes they move all the way to the seaside, and many of them are killed when they fall into the sea.
Recently (近来), scientists have studied the migration of a kind of lobster (龙虾). Every year, when the season of the bad weather arrives, the lobsters get into a long line and start to walk across the floor of the ocean. Nobody knows why they do this, and nobody knows where they go. So, sometimes we know why humans and animals move from one place to another, but at other times we don’t. Maybe living things just like to travel. Most animals move from one place to another at a certain time to _______.

C.enjoy warmer weather | D.find beautiful places |
The mice in northern Europe move when _______.

C.Sometimes we know why and how living things move from one place to another, but sometimes we don’t. |

It’s hard to make friends if you stay at home alone all the time. Get out of the house and do things that will put you in touch with other people. It’s easier to make friends when you have the same interests.
Don’t be afraid to show people what you are really good at. Talk about the things you like and do best. People will be interested in you if there is something interesting about you.
Look at people in the eyes when you talk to them. That way, they will find it easier to talk to you. If don’t, people may think you are not interested in them and may stop being interested in you.
Listen carefully. Let people talk about themselves before talking about ‘me, me, me’. Ask lots of questions. Show interest in their answers.
Try to make friends with the kind of people you really like — not just with those who are easy to meet. Be friendly to a lot of people. If so, more people will choose to make friends with you.

Weather can influence (影响) people’s intelligence(智力). A report in 1983 showed that IQ of a group of students was very high when a very strong wind came, but after the strong wind, their IQ was 10% lower. That wind could help people have higher intelligence. Very hot weather, on the other hand, can make it lower. A recent report shows that students in many schools of the US often get low marks in exams in the hot months of the year( July and August).
Weather also has a strong influence on people’s feelings. Winter may be a bad time for thin people. They might feel unhappy during cold days. But fat people may have a hard time in hot summer.
Low air pressure (气压) may make people forgetful. People leave more bags on buses and in shops on low-pressure days. People feel best at a temperature of about 18°C.
