English words don’t stay the same. People need new words for new ideas and new inventions. Different words come into use, or old words are used in a new way.
English can be changed by borrowing words from other languages. The word “tomato” was borrowed from Mexico and“tea”came from China and so on. Now new space and science words are being borrowed from other countries, too. New words are formed by adding two words together. “Countryside” and “earthquake” are made up of two parts. Sometimes new words are shorter forms of old words. The word “photo” was made from “photograph” by cutting off the end of the longer word. “Plane” was made by cutting off the front part of “airplane”. The names of people and products can become new words, too. Our “sandwich” was named after a man called Sandwich and “sello tape”(透明胶带) was a name given by the company that first made the product.New English words are needed because _____.

There was a man who had four sons. He wanted his sons to learn not to judge(判断 ) things too quickly, so he sent them each to go and look at a pear tree that was far away.
The first son went in winter, the second in spring , the third in summer, and the youngest son went in autumn. When they all came back home the father called them together to describe what they had seen.
The first son said that the tree was ugly. The second son said no-it was covered with green buds (蓓蕾)and full of promise. The third son didn’t agree. He said it was full of flowers that looked very beautiful. The last son said it was full of fruit.
The man then explained to his sons that they were all wrong, because they each had seen just one season in the tree’s life. He told them not to judge how a tree is by only one season. Like that ,the pleasure, joy and love that come from one’s life can only be measured(衡量 )in the end. If you give up when it’s winter, you will miss the promise of your spring, the beauty of your summer and the fruit of your autumn..The man sent his sons each to go and ________ _________a pear tree that was far away.

The 30th Olympics will be held in London soon. More and more people will travel there and watch the games. And it’s necessary for the tourists to know the customs there. Here are some tips(建议)given by William Hanson, an English manner expert.
◆ Afternoon tea. The traditional view that the British sit down for an afternoon tea is not popular any more. Few people keep the tradition nowadays.
◆ Give tips(小费)— but not in a clear way. The British would like to choose a quiet way of saying “thank you” when they get good service. In fact, many British waiters will not mind if you decide not to tip at all.
◆ Greeting with a kiss. The British aren’t like their neighbors in France. They do not greet others with a kiss very often. Many people prefer to shake hands or pat(轻拍) on the back to say “ hello” .
◆ Conversation tips. If you are not sure what you are talking about, end a sentence with the word “mate”.

Young American Volunteers
If you have no special plans for your holiday, why not spend your time helping others? Don’t listen to people who say that young people today often think only of themselves. It’s not true at all. More and more young people in the USA volunteer to spend their school holidays working for others. And they don’t do it for money. Here are some of their stories.
Alice Hamilton, 17 I’m going to help the Forest Center build new hiking paths in the mountains. It’s going to be terrific – I’ll spend the whole summer living in a tent and breathing the clean mountain air. I’m going to sleep under the stars. It will be a nice sport, and I’ll be able to do something good at the same time!
Jason Moore, 18 This summer, I’m going to volunteer with Special House Program. They build good, low-cost houses and sell them to the families that are not very rich. They’ll teach me what to do, so I’ll help people and also have a chance to learn how to build houses.
Trish Anderson, 16 I’m going to teach kids who have trouble reading. I’ll work for a program called Reading For Life. Every day, I’m going to help kids choose and read books that they like. I want to be a teacher and I love children and reading, so this is going to be a great experience for me.
