Someone is singing next door, but you feel unhappy because her singing is terrible. So you think she is just making noise. We know that too much noise makes people feel terrible.
Scientists are still trying to find out more about noise, but already it is known that a noise of over 85 decibels(分贝) can make some people tried and anxious(焦虑的).
In the past we thought only workers in very noisy places became deaf easily. Today, scientists believe that 10% of all workers in Britain become deaf in their work.
There are also new dangers from noise. Pop music, for example, can reach 120 decibels when it is played loudly five feet away! Only a plane can make such loud noise when it takes off.
There was an experiment in the United States. Some people would be given a lot of money if they stood below a jet when it was taking off over their heads. No one got the money after the jet flew past because all of them died in the noise.
People can’t pay their attention on what they are doing when there is much noise. Workers in noisy offices, for example, do their work more slowly than workers in quiet offices. Another study shows that workers in factories can do dull(枯燥的) jobs better when lively music is played for them.

Minoru Yamasaki was a well-known American architect (建筑师). He was born in 1912 in Seattle, Washington. His parents came from Japan. Minoru went to college to study architecture. Every summer he worked in a fish factory to help pay for college. Often he worked from four o'clock in the morning until midnight. He slept in a room with 100 other men. Later in life, Yamasaki remembered these times and was always good to his workers.
Yamasaki sometimes dreamed about his work. Once he woke up at three o’clock in the morning. He remembered a building that was in his dream. He got up and started to draw. Yamasaki used a new design for the buildings. These buildings are now the Century Plaza Hotel, and Tower in Los Angeles, California.
Yamasaki was different from other architects. His buildings give people a feeling of peace and happiness. Many of his designs have pools of water, flowers, and windows on the roof to let in light. He always designed buildings to please people. He wanted to give them a place away from the busy ways of modern life.
Yamasaki worked for several companies. But his success began when he started his own company. In 1956, he won the Architect’s First Honor Award for his design of an airport in St. Louis, Missouri. He won two more awards over the next five years. In 1962, he designed the World Trade Center in New York. It is very famous.
In 1993, a bomb exploded (炸弹爆炸) in the World Trade Center. But the buildings did not fall down because they had a good design.
Yamasaki had strong opinions about his buildings. They had to be built his way. He refused to change the design of his buildings, even if he lost a job.
Minoru Yamasaki died in 1986. He designed more than 300 buildings. People will enjoy the design and beauty of his buildings for a very long time.

One little miracle (奇迹) has been happening to me recently, and it gives me a special joy.
A few months ago, I was 1 my daughter, Sally, some stories about my mother. My daughter was so young when my mother died that she doesn’t remember her well. I told her all I could remember, like how wonderful my mother was and how much she meant to me.
One day, Sally was sad because her grandmother was in heaven (天堂) and she couldn’t see her. I explained that though her grandmother was dead, now she was still watching over us and could send us something to let us know she was there. She could be anywhere, even riding invisibly (看不见地) on the back of a butterfly (蝴蝶). Just after I said this, a butterfly flew down right by us, and we laughed happily.
Now many people would say it was just luck that the butterfly flew down at that time. A funny thing, however, has happened since then. Every time I go out in any type of weather I see butterflies. Very often they fly right by my face to get my attention. I always say hi to Mom, send her my love, and thank God for little miracles.
Everyone is always looking 2some big miracles to come out and save them when they are in trouble, but they don’t notice the little miracles that happen every day right in front of their eyes. I know what they really are, however. For me little miracles are the best kind. So many little miracles happen around me all the time that I know they are not just luck.
