My name is Scott and I am 36 years old. I have spent most of my adult life doing an 36 job, so I had a very cynical (愤世嫉俗的) view of life and the world around me. I saw no point in trying to 37 my life or the lives of the people around me.
Two years ago my wife 38 me to return to school and work toward a career where I would find satisfaction. So I entered Long Beach City College to pursue a 39 in history. Last term I took a political science class. The 40 Dr. Rock had such a great effect on me. He 41 in the Air Force, worked in the U.S. nuclear program and served in the White House. When I asked another instructor 42 someone who was so overqualified(资历过高的)worked at a small community college, she 43 told me because he wanted to.
This 44 me, so I asked Dr. Rock himself why he did not pursue a better role in his career. What he told me has changed my 45 forever. He told me that by working at the college he would be able to 46 the kinds of students he believed would make a 47 in the world. He said that 48 the right motivation and support, the students he taught could become the future leaders of our country. He said that he preferred the inner city 49 because the students there showed the 50 promise and cared deeply for their education.
Dr. Rock paid attention to the needs of the community. He taught me how to care and 51 us to take part in our community in any way we 52 .
I thought that I was the 53 one that was affected by his lessons, but at the end of the term I found that the entire class had felt the same 54 that came over me. Dr. Rock taught us how to 55 our country, our community and ourselves.

I made up my mind to drive to South Carolina to meet my friends in my used car. Though I had only been there once 36 and did not know the 37 very well. I was on the 38 after I had made some enquiries.
At Ashvelle, there was a crossroad where I could go on along the main road or I could take a short cut(小道,近路). The short cut was to 39 several hills and was dangerous, I hesitated (犹豫)for a little while and then chose the main road, for I wanted to be 40 .
Something strange happened 41 I drove a long way and found it was not the correct road that I wanted to 42 , but the hilly road I decided to avoid. I realized that it was at the 43 that I had made the 44 mistake. “What shall I do?” I asked myself. If I went back to take that road again, it would be very late by the time I got to Columbia. Thinking it 45 , I decided to go on. “If 46 people can go along this road, why can’t I?” I 47 myself.
The short cut, to my surprise, was not that 48 . In fact, it was only a very peaceful country road, 49 up and down two low 50 .There was 51 traffic. On both sides of the road, you could see trees, wild flowers, and 52 with cows and horses. My fear was 53 with the wind. Listening to the beautiful country music over my car stereo (立体声), I drove on and 54 the scenery which was so quiet and so natural. Even my used car forgot to give me 55 . It was just in this light heartedness that I arrived at my destination. My friends, after they heard what had happened to me, all said it sounded like an adventure.

It was a bright spring afternoon when Freda told me she wouldn’t need me any more. I had just finished my four-hour work - 36 up and down the stairs of her three-storey home, cleaning the floor and washing the dished. She was 37 jeans and a sweater. Sitting at the table I had just 38 a pile of papers spread around her. Her husband’s 39 was going to be reduced by thirty percent. And they were trying to live as if it had 40 happened. I felt sorry for her, but I also felt a sense of 41 .
I had been cleaning Freda’s house for five years and had 42 an unexpected relationship with the family. It was not just 43 I had become an expert at scraping(刮掉)dirt stuck to their wooden floor. 44 that I had learned exactly how to place toys on the girls’ beds. It was 45 than that, for I felt I had become a part of their 46 .
Freda stayed at home with the kids, 47 I would often see her in the morning 48
them to school. And I’d be there when they 49 home at lunch for sandwiches and piano practice. I had 50 them grow up. Now I was fired, but the 51 thing was that I still wanted to keep scraping away the dirt and dust for the family.
I left Freda’s 52 relationship with my clients(主顾). Who am I 53 them? As a matter of fact. I’m 54 an employee - the lowest kind of employee. But I’m also a trusted 55 of the family. I can’t help worrying about what happens around me.
