You can never be too sure these days in the United States of your neighbors or even your customers! Try to keep a low profile (姿态) in your neighborhood: Don’t announce to everyone that you are running a home business with thousands of dollars worth of equipment. As much as possible, do not invite clients (客户) or visitors to your home. In fact, I know of some homebased entrepreneurs (企业家) who would rather meet their clients in a neutral ground, e.g. the client’s office or even Starbucks.
There are other ways to keep burglars away from your house.
•Keep lights on around your house in the evenings. Light is a natural fright for burglars.
•Invest in a security alarm, particularly if your house is located at a remote spot. Security systems can often bring down the cost of your homeowner’s premium (保险费).
•Make sure that all windows and doors are locked and the security alarm turned on before you sleep at night or go out of the house. Avoid keeping house keys in obvious places, such as under the lamp or on top of the doorframe.
•Adding an additional lock will provide extra security when you are home. The deadlock, sometimes called an “exit only deadbolt”is a deadbolt that does not have an external (外部的) key. It is clearly visible on the door from the outside, but cannot be broken into without destroying the door, frame or lock itself. While this security won’t help directly when you aren’t home, the visibility may discourage an intruder from trying the door.
•Your door itself should be made of strong materials, such as oneinch thick solid hardwood or heavy metal.
The advice given by the writer in the passage focuses on ________.

A.how to make your house safe from burglars
B.what to do when your house is broken into
C.how to improve social security in the United States
D.how to run a home business

A.buy a security alarm and turn it on in the evening
B.fix an extra lock on the door from inside
C.have the doors made of solid hardwood or heavy metal
D.keep lights on in all rooms to threaten burglars

What does the underlined word “intruder” most probably mean in the passage?

A.Someone who is invited for a visit.
B.Someone who illegally enters the home.
C.Someone who pays regular visits to the home.
D.Someone who tries to destroy the lock.

China is going green. In order to reduce air pollution and oil-shortages, automobile manufacturers have announced their plans to develop hybrid vehicles (混合燃料汽车) for the Chinese market. Toyota’s hybrid car Prius will be ready to drive in China this week. Let’s have a look at the new car.
Any vehicle is a hybrid when it combines two or more sources of power. Hybrid cars run off a rechargeable battery and gasoline. Hybrid cars have special engines, which are smaller than traditional gasoline engines. They run at 99 percent of their power when the car is cruising (匀速行驶). A specially designed battery motor provides extra power for running up hills or when extra acceleration(加速) is needed.
Step into a Prius, and turn on the engine. The first thing you notice is how much quieter it is than a traditional car. At this point, the car’s gasoline engine is dormant (休眠). The electric motor will provide power until the car reaches about 24 km/h. If you stay at a low speed, you are effectively driving an electric car, with no gasoline being used, and no waste gas gives off.
The onboard (车载的) computer makes the decision about when to use a gas engine, when to go electric, and when to use a combination of the two. If you go over 24 km/h, when you step on the gas pedal (油门), you are actually telling the computer how fast you want to go.
The electronic motor recharges automatically using a set of batteries. When driving at high speed, the gasoline engine not only powers the car, but also charges the batteries. Any time you use the brake, the electric motor in the wheels will work like a generator(发电机) and produce electricity to recharge the batteries. As a consequence, the car’s batteries will last for around 200,000 miles.
The author writes this passage mainly to ________.

A.teach people how to drive a hybrid car

C.show how to save their gasoline when driving a car
D.announce plans to develop hybrid vehicles for China

A.The hybrid cars reduce air pollution and oil-shortages.
B.The car’s gasoline engine doesn’t work until it reaches about 24 km/h.
C.This kind of car is completely controlled by an onboard computer.
D.A specially designed battery motor provides extra power when needed.

What is the MOST important feature of hybrid cars?

A.They are powered by both a rechargeable battery and gasoline.
B.They are much quieter than traditional cars.
C.They only use 99 percent of their power to run up hills.
D.They have smaller engines than traditional gasoline ones.

In today’s world of cellphones, mini laptops and MP3 players, most people have at least one time-telling tool with them. Since these devices are so common,is time running out for the 500yearold watch?According to some consumers, yes. New Jersey teenager Charlie Wollman says a watch is “an extra piece of equipment with no necessary function”.Many young adults agree—and use their cellphones to tell time. Louis Galie, a senior vice president at Timex, said that fewer young people wear watches today than five years ago. As a result, some people claim that the watch industry is at a crossroads.
However, watchmakers optimistically say that watches regain popularity when consumers reach their 20s and 30s.By then, they are willing to spend money on a quality timepiece that doesn’t just keep good time. Fifty years ago, watchmakers boasted about their products’ accuracy. But in recent years, the watch industry has transformed itself into an accessory business. And for many today, the image a watch communicates has become more important than the time it tells.
“Complications”—features that go beyond simple timekeeping—are an important part of a watch’s image. Today’s watches offer a lot of features that suit almost any personality. These features include altitude trackers, compasses, lunar calendars, USB drives, and even devices that measure the effectiveness of golf swings!
Creativity is also a key element in today’s watches. For example,Japanese watchmaker Tokyoflash makes watches that don’t even look like watches. The company’s popular Shinshoku model uses different color lights to tell time. It looks more like a futuristic(未来主义的)bracelet than a watch. Another Japanese watchmaker, EleeNo, makes a “handless” watch. Using a ring of circles to keep time, this watch makes an excellent conversation piece.
Whether a watch communicates fashion sense, creative talent or a love of sports, consumers want their timepieces to stand out. Nowadays, everyone has the same kind of gadget (小玩意儿)in their bags,so people want to make a statement with what’s on their wrists. Will this interesting wrist fashion last?Only time will tell!
Why aren’t watches popular with young people as before?

A.Because watches cannot keep good time as cellphones, mini laptops and MP3 players.
B.Because watches are featured by the disadvantages of simple function.
C.Because watches are too expensive to afford.
D.Because watches don’t have beautiful appearance as other modern timetelling tools.

A.Watchmaking is facing a survival crisis challenge.
B.Watchmaking is faced with the developing opportunity.

It can be implied that ________.

A.people will gradually lose interest in watches as they grow older
B.watchmakers scarcely change the development strategy for watches
C.today’s watches are better than those in the past in quality
D.customers used to be more concerned with the quality of a watch than with its image

What’s the best title of the passage?

A.Watches and Teenagers B.The History of Watches
C.The Accuracy of Watches D.Watches Tell More than Time
