At dinner my son talked about how much he liked my truck. I 3 having it, but I said: “Guy, my heart is not set on that truck. I like it but it is just metal and won’t 4 forever. Never set your heart on anything that won’t last.
We were talking 5 we heard a loud noise. 6 hearing it, the whole family ran outside. My son shouted; “Dad! Dad, Holly crashed your truck!”
My heart sank and my mind was flooded with conflicting (矛盾的) thoughts. Was anyone hurt? Who else was 7? As I ran to the door, I heard a voice in my heart say: “Here is a chance to show Holly 8 you really love. She’ll never forget it.”
The 9 had happened in my own driveway. Holly had 10 my truck into our family van (搬运车). Because of her 11 , she had confused the brakes (刹车) and the gas pedal (油门). Holly was unhurt 12 but when I reached her, she was crying and saying “Oh, Dad, I’m sorry. I know how much you love this truck.” I held her in my arms as she cried.
Later that week a friend asked what had happened to my truck. I told her the whole story. Her eyes moistened (湿润) and she said: “That happened to me when I was a girl. I 13 my dad’s car completely. When I got home, my dad knocked me to the ground and began to 14 me.”
Over 40 years later, she still felt the 15 of the night, which was a deep wound on her soul.
I remember how 16 Holly was when she crashed our truck, and how I 17 her. One day, when Holly 18 on her life, I want her to know that I love her a thousand times 19 any piece of 20 .

Mrs. Jones was very interested in singing. She had a good , except that some of her high notes tended to sound like a gate, which someone had forgotten to . Mrs. Jones was very aware of this , and took every she could find to practise these high . As she lived in a small house where she could not practise without the rest of the family, she usually went for long walks along the country roads whenever she had time, and practised her high notes there. Every time she heard a or a person coming along the , she stopped and until she could no longer be heard before she started practising again, because she was a person, and because she was sensitive about those high notes.
One afternoon, however, a fast, open car came up behind her so and so fast that she did not hear it until it was only a few yards from her. She was singing some of her highest and most notes at the time, and as the car passed her, she saw an anxious suddenly come over its driver’s face. He put his brakes on violently, and as soon as the car stopped, he jumped out and began to all his tires carefully.
Mrs. Jones did not dare to tell him what the noise he had heard had really been, so he got back into his car and drove off as as he had been when he stopped.

When I was in the ninth grade, my parents started fighting. I could hear them at each other at night. It always seemed like they were fighting about me. I started to and couldn’t fall asleep. Some nights I didn’t feel like I at all.My grades really started to too. It was hard to pay attention during class because I felt so all the time.
My mom had to take me to see a therapist (治疗专家). On the way, I to worry even more. What would my friends me if they knew I was going to see a therapist? What if the therapist couldn’t me? It was not that . My therapist asked me a lot of questions and then we talked about how my life might if I was able to get more sleep. I understood how the future could be better, I felt really to try new things. At the end of the session, I was sent home with a piece of paper called a sleep diary. When I woke up each morning, I had to answer all these questions about my sleep.
, she gave me homework related to my sleep. I wasn’t to text or be on my computer after 8 pm. If I couldn’t fall asleep after about ten minutes, she wanted me to get up and do something in another room that would help me to and feel sleepy.
During the therapy sessions, she was a cheerleader for my life and kept out all the things I was doing right. With her help, it was so much easier to notice the things that were happening all around me.
After about two months of seeing my therapist, I was sleeping at least eight hours a night, sometimes even nine! I felt happier. I could . My grades got better. Basically, I felt like myself! It was so much better to admit that something was and to do something to fix it just watch my whole life get worse and worse.

I teach a bilingual kindergarten class. One Monday I noticed that two of my students, Juan and Cynthia, had a shared on Friday of that week. I told both their moms that they could bring in to celebrate their children’s birthdays.
I wondered whether either wanted to bring in a birthday treat for the kids. On Thursday, I asked Juan and Cynthia about it, but they didn’t know anything about their parents’ plans. Both children, however, were very about having a birthday party the next day in class. As I was tired after work, I decided to it until the next day.
The next morning my first thought was: What should I do about the cake? It would be terrible if there was nothing for the kids to at the party. The thought worried me as I approached (接近) the Mexican bakery on my drive to school.
The shop had four large pieces of cake for a dollar each. The only thing was I was on cash. I needed the five dollars in my purse to until payday. However, I decided the party was the most important.
After story time, I told the students that we are celebrating the double birthdays of Juan and Cynthia.I brought out the cake and lit the candles, and then we sang Happy Birthday. I cut each of the four pieces of cake into five little pieces. It was just , all 20 of my students had come to class that day.
At the end, they said thank you to me. As I watched them walk away, still , tears came to my eyes.
After talking with their parents, I learned that our simple celebration had been both Cynthia’s and Juan’s first birthday party. I had to the last couple of days of that month on the one dollar ---- but it was certainly worth it!
