It’s only after three weeks into a new job that I made a serious mistake. My boss called it “extremely embarrassing” in a company-wide e-mail — which, 11 , he wrote because he felt he needed to explain that what I did was something 12 in the company should ever do. I wish I 13 give a good excuse for what I did. At the very least, I wish I could explain it somehow — 14 it on youth, inexperience or ignorance. Unfortunately, I’m 15 , experienced and I know better.
16 I work with some very kind and compassionate (富于同情心的) people. For the past couple of days many of them have taken time to 17 by my desk and offer comfort, encouragement and support. Some have shared with me similar 18 they have made. Evidently I’m not the only “ 19 ” person here.
One of the exchanges I had this week was with Lois, the much-honored, much-respected professional who 20 the desk right next to mine. Lois was completely 21 about her work, and to be honest I was a little nervous about how she would 22 to such an extremely embarrassing incident.
As I expected, Lois didn’t pass over the 23 when she saw me the next day. She mentioned it directly, 24 with empathetic consideration. She listened to my 25 . Just as I was ready to express my regrets, she brought my self-pity partly to a(n) 26 .
“It happened”, she said, “There’s nothing you can do to 27 that. It happened. But it’s over now. It’s 28 . It’s in the past. You need to let it go, and move on.” And with that she returned her 29 to her work, as if to say, “We’re done here.”
I beat myself up for weeks. At such times I need to remember those 30 words: It’s over. It’s done. Let it go. And mostly, move on.

Immediately I got up and dressed, I stuck my violin under my jacket and went out into the streets to try my 36 . I wandered about for an hour, looking for a likely 37 , feeling as though I were about to commit a crime. Then I 38 at last under a bridge near the station and decided to have a try.
I felt tense and 39 . It was the first time, after all. I drew the violin from under the jacket like a gun. It was here, in Southampton, with trains rattling overhead, that I was about to 40 myself. One moment I was part of the hurrying crowds, the next I stood apart, my back to the wall, my hat on the 41 before me, the violin under my chin.
The first notes I played were loud and raw, like a declaration of protest, then they settled down and began to run more _42 and to stay more or less in tune. To my 43 ,I was neither arrested nor told to shut up. Indeed, nobody took any 44 at all. Then an old man, without stopping at all, dropped a penny into my 45 as though getting rid of some guilty evidence.
I worked the streets of Southampton for several days, gradually obtaining the truth of the 46 by trial and error. It was not a good thing, for instance, to let the hat fill up with money---the sight could 47 a kind-hearted man; nor was it wise to 48 it completely, which could also confuse him, giving him no hint as to where to 49 his money. Placing a couple of pennies in the hat to start the thing going soon became a 50 practice and I made sure, between tunes, to take off most of the earnings, but always leaving two 51 behind.
Old 52 were most generous, and so were women with children, shop girls and barmaids. As for men, heavy drinkers were always willing listeners and so were big guys with muscles. But 53 a man with an expensive hat, briefcase or dog: respectable types were the least 54 of all. Except for retired army officers, who would shout "Why aren't you 55 , young man?" and then would over-tip to cover up their confusion.

It was a cold evening and my daughter and I were walking up Broadway.I didn’t notice a guy sitting inside a cardboard box.But Nora did.She wasn’t even four, but she 36 at my coat and said, “That man’s cold, Daddy, 37 we take him home?”
I don’t remember my reply. But I do remember a sudden 38 feeling inside me.I had always been delighted at how much my daughter noticed in her 39 , whether it was 40 in flight or children playing. But now she was noticing 41 and beggary.
A few days later, I saw an article in the newspaper about volunteers who picked up a food package from a nearby school on a Sunday morning and 42 it to an elderly person. It was quick and easy.I 43 us up.Nora was 44 about it.She could understand the importance of food, so she could easily see how 45 our job was. When Sunday came, she was ready, but I had to 46 myself to leave the house to fetch the food package. On the way to the school, I fought an urge to turn 47 .The Sunday paper and coffee were waiting for me at home. Why do this? 48 , we phoned the elderly person we’d been appointed. She 49 us right over.
The building was in a bad state.Facing us was a silver-haired woman in an old dress. She took the package and asked us to come in.Nora ran inside.I unwillingly followed. 50 inside, I saw that the apartment belonged to someone poor. Our hostess showed us some photos.Nora played and when it came time to say good-bye, we three hugged, I walked home in tears.
Professionals call such a(n) 51 a “volunteer opportunity”.They are opportunities, and I’ve come to see.Where else but as volunteers do you have the opportunity to do something 52 that’s good for others as well as for yourself? Nora and I regularly serve meals to needy people and 53 clothes for the homeless.Yet, as I’ve 54 her grow over these past four years, I still wonder ------ which of us has 55 more?

When I entered the classroom, our teacher announced we were going to have a math test. I took a look at the 41 full of what looked like hieroglyphs(象形文字) to me and began to 42 . I did the best that I could, and then left my 43 to put my paper in a pile(摞) on the front desk with a(n) 44 .
I returned to my seat and then an idea came to my mind. I 45 where the teacher was before I made my 46 . She was walking in the 47 of the room with her back turned. I left my seat and went back to the pile of test papers already handed 48 and when I picked up my paper I also 49 the paper right below it before returning to my seat. When I looked at the 50 paper I had taken, I discovered it was the work of the 51 girl in our class, I copied her answers to my paper.
The next day the teacher handed back our papers turning them facedown on everyone’s desks. When I 52 my paper over, I was 53 to see an “F” on it. After class I went to the girl whose answers I had 54 and said to her, “That math test was difficult. I 55 it. I guess we need to study more.” Her 56 was, “Not me, I got every question 57 and got an A.”
The teacher knew. She never blamed me in front of the class and 58 me to keep my dignity(尊严). I made a 59 to myself never ever to cheat again. I would remember to always be 60in the things I do. I never forgot that teacher who failed me when, really, I had failed myself.

New genetic analysis has revealed that many Amazon tree species are likely to survive human-made climate warming in the coming century, contrary to previous findings that temperature increases would cause them to die out. A study, 1 in the latest edition of Ecology and Evolution, reveals the 2 age of some Amazonian tree species -- more than 8 million years -- and 3 shows that they have survived previous periods as warm as many of the global warming imagined periods 4 for the year 2100.
The authors write that, having survived warm periods in the past, the trees will 5 survive future warming, provided there are no other major environmental changes. 6 extreme droughts and forest fires will impact Amazonia as temperatures 7 , the trees will stand the direct impact of higher temperatures. The authors 8 that as well as reducing greenhouse gas emissions to minimize the risk of drought and fire, conservation policy should remain 9 on preventing deforestation(采伐森林)for agriculture and mining.
The study disagrees with other recent researches which predicted tree species’ extinctions 10 relatively small increases in global average air temperatures.
Study co-author Dr Simon Lewis (UCL Geography) said the 11 were good news for Amazon tree species, but warned that drought and over-exploitation of the forest remained major 12 to the Amazon’s future.
Dr Lewis said: “The past cannot be compared directly with the future. while tree species seem likely to 13 higher air temperatures than today, the Amazon forest is being transformed for agriculture and 14 , and what remains is being degraded by logging, and increasingly split up by fields and roads.
“Species will not move as freely in today’s Amazon as they did in previous warm periods, when there was no human 15 . Similarly, today’s climate change is extremely fast, making comparisons with slower changes in the past 16 .”
“With a clearer 17 of the relative risks to the Amazon forest, we 18 that direct human impacts -- such as forest clearances for agriculture or mining -- should remain a key point of conservation policy. We also need more aggressive 19 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in order to make minimum the risk of drought and fire impacts and 20 the future of most Amazon tree species.”

My partner and I were staying in Beruwela on the Southwest coast of Sri Lanka when the tsunami(海啸) hit. We 1 from the first floor of our hotel. At that time, a wall of water swept in and tore the ground floor apart underneath us. 2 to be moved out to Colombo was very frightening because everyone was afraid that another and possibly bigger 3 would come. At one stage we heard that another wave was coming and there was 4 . Surprisingly, a fleet of small vehicles driven by local people arrived outside the hotel and we just 5 a minibus.
We were taken up a hill to a place of 6 where we were welcomed by a family who told us that we could stay as 7 as we needed to. Among all this death and 8 , these people were trying to help us! We were shown to the local Mosque where hundreds of locals were cooking, collecting and distributing food and supplies for those less 9 . In the three days we were waiting to leave, we saw many examples of ordinary Sri Lankans, many of whom had lost friends, 10 and livelihoods(生计,谋生方式), trying to help others who were worse off. It was a very moving experience.
We have since been 11 the family who took us in and they are saying that what their country needs most urgently is practical help, doctors, nurses and medicines, helping to 12 roads and rebuilding electricity and water supplies. These people would have done anything to help us, it is time for the British Government to do more to help them.
