On August 26, 1999, New York City was struck by a terrible rainstorm. The rain caused the streets to 36 and the subway system almost came to a stop.
Unfortunately, this happened during the morning rush hour. Many people who were going to work were 37 to go home. Some battled to 38 a taxi or to get on a bus. Still others faced the 39 bravely, walking miles to get to work.
I 40 to be one of people on the way to work that morning. I went from subway line to subway line only to find that most 41 had stopped. After making my way 42 crowds of people, I finally found a subway line that was 43. Unfortunately, there were so many people waiting to 44 the subway that I could not even get down the stairs to the 45 . So I took the train going in the opposite direction, and then switched back to the downtown train.
Finally, after what seemed like forever, the train 46 my stop. Then I had to walk several blocks in the increasingly heavy rain. When I finally got to my office, I was 47 through, exhausted and 48 .
My co-workers and I spent most of the day drying off. When it was 5:00 pm, I was ready to go home. I was about to turn off my computer 49 I received an email from Garth, my Director:
I would like to thank all of you who made the effort and 50 went to work. It is always reassuring(令人欣慰), at times like these, when employees so clearly show their 51 to their jobs. Thank you.
Garth’s email was short, but I learned more from that 52 message than I ever did from a textbook. The email taught me that a few words of 53 can make a big difference. The rainstorm and the traffic 54 had made me tired and upset. But Garth’s words immediately 55 me and put a smile back on my face.

Whenever we hear about “the homeless”, most of us think of the Developing world. But the 31 is that homelessness is everywhere. For example, how many of us would expect to see people living on the streets of a 32 country like Germany?
Kurt Muller and his wife Rita have spent eleven years making 33 for the homeless of Berlin, Germany’s capital. They first 34 one long hot summer when most Germans were 35 on holiday. Kurt and his wife stayed at home, made sandwiches, 36a table in the street and gave food to the homeless.
The Mullers soon realized that food and clothing weren’t37 . “What these people also need is warmth and 38 ,” says Rita. The Mullers didn’t 39 to give their phone number to the street people and told them to phone anytime. Rita40 there was somebody at home to answer the phone and their home was always 41 to anyone who couldn’t face another night on the street.
The couple were soon 42 all their time and money, so Kurt visited food and clothing companies to43 donations. Today, over thirty companies 44 donate food and other goods to the cause and volunteers help to 45 them to the homeless. The public also give clothes and money and a shoe producer 46 new shoes.
Kurt and Rita receive no 47 for their hard work. “ We feel like parents,” says Rita, “and parents shouldn’t 48 money for helping their children. One day I visited an art museum while waiting for my husband to finish a business meeting . I was expecting a quiet 21 of the splendid artwork.

I met them several times as I moved 27 the various rooms of art, Each time I heard her continuous flow of words, I moved away 28 .
I was standing at the counter of the museum gift shop making a 29 when the couple approached the 30 . Before they left, the man 31 into his pocket and pulled out a white object. He 32 it into a long sick and then 33 his way into the coatroom to get his wife’s jacket.
“He′s a 34 man.” The clerk at the counter said. “Most of us would give up if we were blinded at such a young age, During his recovery, he made a promise his life wouldn’t change. So, as before, he and his wife come in 35 there is a new art show.”
“But what does he get out of the art?”I asked .“He can’t see.”
“Can’t see? You’re 36 . He sees a lot, More than you and I do,” the clerk said, “His wife 37 each painting so he can see it in his head.”
I learned something about patience, 38 and love that day. I saw the patience of a young wife describing paintings to a person without 39 and the courage of a husband who would not 40 blindness to change his life. And I saw the love shared by two people as I watched this couple walk away, their arms intertwined.

A man hired a taxi outside the airfield. The cab had a woolen carpet with 26 lace edges. On the glass partition that 27 the driver's seat was a copy of a famous painting. Its windows were all clean. The customer was very much 28 and said to the driver, “I've never seen a nicer 29 .”“Thank you for your praise.”the driver answered 30 .
“The car isn't mine,” said the driver. “It belongs to the company. I used to be a 31 of cabs. When they returned, all of them were as 32 as garbage cans with cigarette butts and rubbish 33 here and there. On the seats and door-handles could be found something 34 like peanut sauce or, chewing gum.Why so? I thought if the car itself were very clean the passengers would most 35 be considerate and refrain from littering.”
“So when I got a 36 to be a taxi-driver, I began 37 my idea into practice-to tidy and 38 the car. Now before a new passenger gets on my car, I'd make a cheek and be sure it is in good order. When my car 39 after a day's work, it always remains 40 .”
When doing a thing, one makes efforts and wants to see the result. To change others, one has to make twice the 41 but get half the result. To change oneself is the other way round-more fruit with less effort. One had better ask oneself why one makes 42 on others much more than on oneself. 43 you take enough care to do as best you can for other people's sake, your efforts will yield results, If you 44 the inner world of your own, examine yourself and wipe out the dust and dirt, instead of fixing your eyes on other people, you will find a cheerful 45 for yourself and create a pleasant environment for others.
