Monty Roberts owns a horse ranch(牧马场) in San Ysidro. He told us his story. As a senior, he was asked to write a 36 about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up.
That night he wrote a seven-page paper 37 his goal of someday owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great 38 and he even drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch, showing the 39 of all the buildings.
He put his heart into the 40 and the next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. On the front page was a large red F with a note that 41 , ‘See me after class.’
The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked, ‘Why did I 42 an F?’
The teacher said, ‘This is an 43 dream for a young boy like you. Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. There’s no 44 you could ever do it.’ Then the teacher added, ‘If you will 45 this paper with a more realistic goal, I will reconsider your grade.’”
The boy went home and 46 it. He asked his father what he should do. His father said, ‘Look, son, you have to 47 your own mind on this. However, I think it is a very 48 decision for you.’
Finally, after sitting with it for a week, the boy turned in the 49 paper, making no changes at all. He stated, ‘You can keep the F and I’ll keep my 50 .’
Monty now owned a 200-acre ranch. He had 51 his plan for a 4,000-square-foot house.
Two summers ago that same school teacher brought 30 kids to camp out on his ranch for a week. When leaving, he said 52 , ‘Look, Monty. When I was your teacher, I was something of a dream 53 . During those years I stole a lot of kids’ dreams. 54 , you had enough perseverance not to give up on yours.’”
Don’t let anyone steal your dreams. 55 your heart, no matter what.

I recently traveled to San Francisco for some meetings and found myself with a half day to .My : The 49ers’ first gameof the season, against the Green Bay Packers. The America’s Cup sailing races. Or I could get .
After a terribly longline at the car rental center, I was . So I disappeared into the fog and clouds shrouding the Pacific Coast Highway and headed south with absolutely no in mind. I drove through tunnels out ofthe mountains and stopped at a few state beaches; at one, I watched a wedding out on the cliffs among the crashing . Back inthe car, I drove toward San Gregorio, a town that you can easily . I know because I drove right through it and up on a narrow pine tree–bordered asphalt(柏油) road that felt like it would go on .
A few people just moved around outside the San Gregorio General Store, talking about the motorcycles they've owned over the years. Inside, I founda bar with regular customers, two people playing guitar together, and, of course, a full-on store. I a song, took a seat quickly, and watched the guitarists play and dance. Then I congratulated them, a couple of wrinkled dollars in their bucket, and walked back out into the world.
It was pouring outside. We all waited, some patiently, others , because nature messed up their hurried day. I got lost in the sound and sight of the heavens away the dirt and dust of the world. “Mom, let’s run through the .” said a girl. “When you were talking to Daddy about his cancer, you said, if God can get us through this, he can get us through anything!” “Honey, you are right.” Mom said. Then off they ran. And yes, I did. I ran.
The day could have been so : being into a stadium or bar half-watching sports. this was much more rewarding. Hours prior, I was on a flight with the masses, going through the motions. Then I was out on my own, having an unexpected and unrepeatable experience.
I learned something on September 8: Don’t be to get lost—on purpose or otherwise—and have zero expectations. It will be good for you. I promise.
