Tiger Mom,
You’ve been criticized(批评) a lot since your book, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, came out. One problem is that some people don’t get your humor. They think you’re serious about all things and Lulu and I are suffering a lot from such a strict mother. That is not true.
But for real, it’s not their fault. No outsider can know what our family is really like. They don’t hear us laughing over each other’s jokes. They don’t see us eating our hamburgers with fried rice. They don’t know how much fun we have when the six of us — dogs included — squeeze into one bed and argue about what movies to download from Netflix.
I admit it: Having you as a mother was no tea party. There were some play dates I wish I’d gone to and some piano camps I wish I’d got away from. But now that I’m 18 and about to leave the tiger den(穴), I’m glad you and Daddy raised me the way you did.
A lot of people have accused you of producing robot kids who can’t think for themselves. Well, I came to the opposite conclusion: your strict parenting made me more independent(独立的).
Everybody’s talking about the birthday cards we once made for you, which you refused to take because they weren’t good enough. Funny how some people believe that Lulu and I will feel hurt for life. But let’s face it: It took me 30 second; I didn’t put my heart into it. That’s why, when you rejected it, I didn’t feel hurt at all.
There’s one more thing: I have come to understand what it really means to live a meaningful life to the fullest. To me, it’s about knowing that you’ve tried your best, body and mind. You feel it when the piano piece you’ve practiced for days and hours finally comes to life beneath your fingertips. You feel it when you do something on your own that you never thought you could. And for that, Tiger Mom, thank you.
Yours,
Sophia
In the writer’s opinion, why do some people criticize her mother?

A.They don’t know what her family is really like.
B.They have a different culture.
C.They aren’t strict with their children.
D.They don’t have a good sense of humor.

The passage tells us her mother’s strict parenting raised the writer to be _________.

A.a robot kid B.a kid with no play dates
C.a kid uninterested in the piano D.an independent thinker

Which of the following sentences is Wrong ?

A.Sophia is thankful for what her strict mother has made her
B.Sophia has never been disturbed by tea parties.
C.Sophia is satisfied with her parents’ way of raising her.
D.Tiger Mom was blamed for rejecting her daughters’ birthday cards.

The underlined words “it” in the last paragraph refer to_________.

A.Making personal achievements
B.Having lived your life at 110 percent
C.Practicing piano pieces
D.Doing something on your own

In the very early 1800's, a young boy about 14 years old named John lived in a orphanage(孤儿院) in Old England along with several other children. Orphan meant unwanted and unloved.
Christmas was the one day of the year when the children didn't work and received a gift, an orange. Usually they tried to taste and keep it for so long that it often went bad before they ever peeled(剥开)it to enjoy the sweet juice. Many thoughts were expressed as Christmas time drew near. The children would say, "I will keep mine the longest." John usually slept with his next to his pillow. This year John was overjoyed by the Christmas season. He was becoming a man and stronger and soon he would be old enough to leave. He would save his orange until his birthday in July.
Christmas day finally came. The children were so excited as they entered the big dinning hall. Immediately the master shouted, "John, leave the hall and there will be no orange for you this year." John's heart broke violently wide open. He turned and went quickly back to the cold room. Then he heard the door open and each of the children entered. Little Elizabeth with her hair falling over her shoulders, a smile on her face, and tears in her eyes held out a piece of rag to John. "Here John," she said, "this is for you." As he lifted back the edges of the rag he saw a big juicy orange all peeled and quartered(成四等份) and then he realized what they had done.
John never forgot the sharing, love and personal sacrifice (牺牲)his friends had shown him that Christmas day. In memory of that day every year he would send oranges all over the world to children everywhere.
These children would be happiest when .

A.they got the special gift
B.they preserved it very long

A.He placed his orange next to his pillow.
B.He would eat his orange on his birthday.
C.He wouldn't get his special gift.
D.He would stay in the orphanage for another year.

According to the text, where did John's orange come from this year?

A.It was made up of what these children donated.
B.His master gave him a whole one again.
C.These children bought him one.
D.Little Elizabeth donated hers to John.

What can be inferred from the text?

A.John had expected he wouldn't get the gift this year.
B.John knew why he didn't get the gift this year.
C.John felt ashamed for not getting the special gift.
D.The story teaches us to learn to share with others.

Is there someone you hate? Well, you don’t really hate them. But you get really angry every time you think of them. If you don’t let this anger go, it can turn into bitterness(痛苦).
Bitterness appears when we can’t forgive someone who has hurt us or made us angry. Someone might say or do something that hurts us. But instead of controlling the anger, we keep it deep inside. Before long, a bitter feeling begins to grow. We may think we’re hurting that person by criticizing(批评) him or her often, but we’re really only hurting ourselves.
Bitterness can not only lead to terrible health problems such as heart disease, but also hurt our friendships with our friends and family members. No one enjoys being around an angry person for very long.
If you see bitterness in your life, the following ways can be helpful.
Accept it
Instead of trying to deny your anger, make it clear to yourself and accept it. See your anger for what it is and quickly deal with it.
Stop making excuses for it
You may feel you have a right to be angry. You may think you’re right and the other person is wrong. You may even secretly enjoy making the other person look bad. But in the end, bitterness hurts you much more than the other person. The bitterness will hold you back, and the other person will go on with his or her life.
Forgive and forget it
You probably can’t completely put the anger out of your mind. But you can decide to forgive the other person. Forget it and move on. You’ll enjoy better health and peace of your mind.

What is your zodiac(生肖) animal? According to the Chinese lunar calendar(农历), 12 animals mark 12 different years. It is the basis of the Chinese zodiac. Nowadays, Chinese zodiac animals have worldwide fame and are increasingly popular among western people.
The zodiac is an important part of Chinese culture. People believe that the characteristics of a zodiac animal influence the personality of every person born in that year. For example, people born in the Year of the Tiger are considered powerful and brave.
Zodiac animals also have some social functions. When people think it is not proper to ask: “How old are you”, they may change their question to “What is your zodiac animal?” With this question, you can figure out roughly which year someone was born and the person’s age.
Zodiac animals are not special to China. Many countries share a similar zodiac culture with China. For example, in the Japanese Zodiac, a wild boar(野猪)takes the place of a pig and the Vietnamese(越南的)zodiac has a cat instead of a rabbit.
But have you ever wondered how these 12 animals were chosen to represent each year? According to legend, the Jade Emperor(玉皇大帝)invited all the animals to join him for Chinese New Year. Only 12 animals went to see him. As a reward he named a year after each one in the order they arrived. The ox would have been the first to arrive, but the rat sat on his back and jumped off just before they arrived to come in first place.
