Many of the world’s pollution problems have been caused by the crowding of large groups of people into the cities. Supply for the needs of the people leads to further 1 by industry. If the rapid increase of world 2 continues at the present rate, there may be much greater 3 to human beings. Some scientists 4 of the increase in numbers of people as “population pollution(人口公害)”.
About 2, 000 years ago, the world population was about 250 million. It 5 a billion in 1850. By 1930 the population was two billion. It is now six billion. It is 6 to double by the year 2020. If the population 7 to grow at the same rate, there will be 25 billion people in the 8 a hundred years from now.
Man has been 9 the earth’s resources more and more 10 over the past years. Some of them are almost gone. Now many people believe that man’s 11 problem is how to control the 12 of the population. The material supplies in the world will be far from enough to 13 the human population if the present rate of increase continues. There is already over-crowding(过分拥挤)in many cities and 14 in some countries. Many people believe that human survival(生存) in the future 15 on the answer to the question.

One Bite at a Time
Stephen was on campus(校园)to register when I first met him.
One summer day I was headed over to the administration building, I heard someone call my name. I around and saw Philip, one of my colleagues standing with another young man. As Philip introduced me to the young man, named Stephen, he reminded him that he would be taking one of my , Introduction to Literature. With a somewhat expression, Stephen asked if my class was going to be “hard”. Would he be able to pass? I he was concerned about failing before the day of classes. We talked about what the class would and I saw Stephen’s eyes getting big with .
Then I remembered a bit of classical dialog:
Question: “How do you eat an elephant?”
Answer: “One bite at a time.”
I told him to his work that way. To do his assignment(作业), all of them, and to get them in on time. I added that most students I knew made a timetable of all the assignment so they could their workload.
As time went on, I learned more of Stephen’s story. He had in middle school. It had taken him longer to finish than most young people. Family members, including his mother, kept reminding him that he was a . Now, in the face of their negative-saying he had been admitted into college. He told me that before coming to our campus no one had believed he had much .
Stephen didn’t become an “A” student. He didn’t make any honor rolls. Still, he managed to most of his courses by being in class every day, turning in all of his assignment on time and breaking down his studying into digestible parts. By passing course after course he began to gain a measure of self-respect. He was a great singer and he was the school’s cross-country team.
Every time I saw him on campus, he would brighten up and say, “One bite at a time.” Whenever he introduced me to his friends, he would tell them that he was when he was supposed to be failing. His , he said, was that he was what I taught him before classes ever started: “Take it one bite at a time.”

My parents had some strange rules when my sister and I were growing up.For example they never us soda or juice. Our choice was water or iced tea no sugar. My mom's for it was that she didn't like kids who only drank sweet drinks,or worse, kids who did not like ! She wanted to teach us to like water or unsweetened drinks that did not come in a bottle. We,on the other hand, wanted to a coke when we ate out.Now I can make my own decision, but I choose juice or soda.I don't it.It's not because I don't like it.I' m just used to drinking water. Many people to think that a kid needs juice. If the child can't get it,he or she will secretly buy this kind of drink elsewhere.I found this really ,since I was raised no juice or soda, and I didn't really only having water. Now people kids to make their own choice, I grew up in a family where the children's opinions were seldom for,and the parents made the final decision.

The was almost unbearable. I struggled for days with draft after draft. I put my manuscript (手稿) into a large envelope and dropped it into a mailbox.

Five years later, I was moving to California. While my apartment, I came across the unopened envelope. This time I opened it and read the editor’s letter in :
Ms Profit,
Your story on Salome Bey is fantastic. Yet we need some materials. Please add those and return the article immediately. We would like to your story soon.
Shocked, it took me a long time to . Fear of rejection cost me dearly. I lost at least five hundred dollars and having my article appear in a major magazine. I remember as a smart child when we met with either family or friends. Someone would come up and mention my high “ ” and ask, “What are you going to be when you ?”
Well, it started out being a teacher or a hero. it was a fireman, artist…As I grew older my dreams of the future . When I was in college, I was asked, “What will you major in?” Another question was to find out what I would be when I “grew up”.
By then I had set about becoming a programmer. So I studied and prepared for that. I was studying software full-time for much of my life. I am that I could realize my dream that affords me the opportunity to have a positive on someone’s life. However, for many, there is a “ ” which goes around stealing our dreams and robbing us of the mental state to attain our . Sometimes, the thief will come as a parent, a relative, a friend or a co-worker, the greatest thief is just ourselves.
We find ourselves just about the aim, and this “small” voice inside says, “You’ll never .” “Very few have ever done this successfully.’ And on and on the “small” voice some kind of failure.
Failure, though, is exactly how dreams are . It is one of the most important we have, because it teaches us lessons. And, when we learn these lessons well, we are ready for , which is probably just around the corner.
There are no “overnight” successes, but with perseverance(毅力), it will come. So, be true to your dream, and don’t let anyone steal it from you. You can do anything you want to do, so don’t .
