Because earthquakes happen without warning, it’s important to take steps now to prepare. Because you don’t know where you will be when an earthquake happens, prepare some supplies for your home, workplace, and car.
1. Water.
A person needs at least 1/2 gallon of water daily just for drinking. Store at least1 gallon of water per person per day and be prepared for a 72-hour period. It’s suggested that you buy bottled water. Keep bottled water in its original container and do not open it until you need to use it. Also, do check the “use by” date.
2. Food.
It’s always a practical idea to keep a supply of non-perishable(不易腐烂的) food on hand. Have an enough supply of canned food, dried milk, dried fruits, non-salted nuts and canned juices for at least 72 hours.
3. Flashlights and spare batteries.
Keep a flashlight beside your bed, at your place of work, and in your car. Do not use matches or candles after an earthquake until you are sure that no gas leaks.
Prepare a battery –powered radio and spare batteries. Most telephones will be out of order, so radios will be your best source of information.
4. Clothes.
If you live in a cold place, you must think about warmth. You might not have heat after an earthquake. Think about your clothing and bedding supplies.

If you go to a fast food restaurant, you will probably see a lot of teenagers. Today, many teenagers are overweight, and reason of this is because of their bad eating habits. Most teenagers love fast food with a lot of fat, oil, salt and sugar. People often call this kind of food “junk food”.
But bad eating habits go beyond fast food. We find many teenagers eat unhealthily. Some don’t have breakfast before they go to school. During the day, some don’t have a proper meal for lunch. In a recent survey at one school, scientists found that over two thirds of the students didn’t follow a healthy diet. They didn’t like vegetables, and many of them didn’t like to eat fruits. They preferred to eat food with a lot of salt, sugar, or fat.
Parents today also worry about their children’s diet. Some doctors give the following advice:
Teenagers shouldn’t eat too much junk food.
Teenagers shouldn’t eat food with too much salt. Salt can cause high blood pressure(高血压)in the future.
Teenagers should eat food with less fat, oil, and sugar.
Teenagers need to eat some fruits and vegetables every day. Fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins(维生素)and have little fat.

Here’s a piece of very simple but life changing advice that I first heard from Brain Tracy. Cut down on the TV at night by just one hour. Instead, use that hour to read books that could improve your life.
If you’re a salesman, google for the best and most useful books on improving your sales.
This applies(适用) to all fields, not just the workrelated(与工作相关的)ones. Maybe you want to improve your health, become a more energetic person. Or maybe you want to improve your study, your relations or perhaps do some personal development.
One hour a day is not much. But if you read for one hour a day on weekdays, that’s about 260 hours a year. That’s a large number of books and a lot of useful advice.
If you follow the ideas, who knows what great things and feelings could come into your life. Also, all that information and advice will start to open up your mind. You will start to see more chances in your life.
Now, you might think something like this:
I really don’t have the money….
Answer: Visit your public library or search the database(数据库). Or look for books that are used in places like amazon.com.

Years ago, I lived in a building in a large city. There was another building not far from mine. A woman lived there. I had never met her, but I could see her sit by the window each afternoon, drinking or reading.
After several months, I began to find that her window was dirty. Everything was unclear through the dirty window. I would say to myself, “What a lazy woman! I want to know why she doesn’t wash her window. It really looks terrible.”
One bright morning, I decided to clean my flat, including the window. I worked the whole morning. When I finished the cleaning, I sat down by the window with a cup of coffee for a rest. What a surprise! Everything in the woman’s flat could be seen clearly. Her window was clean!
I began to understand. I watched the woman’s window from my own dirty window. That’s the problem!
This is quite an important lesson for me. How often do I look at and criticize(批评) others through the dirty window of my heart?
From then on, whenever I want to judge someone, I ask myself first, “Am I looking at him through my dirty window?” Then I try to clean the window of my own world so that I may see others’ world more clearly.

The first copper coins(硬币) were made in China. They were round and had a square hole in the center. Different countries have used different metals for their money. Everybody is different from others. There is nobody in the world that is exactly like you: you are unique(唯一的)!That makes the world interesting. There are people who are taller than you. Maybe your hair is the same color as your friend’s, but perhaps yours is longer than hers. Another difference is that your hair may be straight and hers may be curly.
I am sure you have friends who are smarter than you. And you also have friends who are as good at sports as you. But there are also people around you who are not good at these things. However, you can also become good friends.
Are you the same as your best friend? Do you both like to finish your homework the same day you get it? Are you both neat? I think in some ways you are the same, but in many other ways you are different.
So shout to the world, “I am who I am – I am unique!” It takes all sorts to make a world.
