Each day I took the same route to work and passed by a security guard (保安). 1 greeted everyone walking by and made small talk with many of the passers-by and wishing them well. His simple “hello” made people feel 2 . His cheerful smile became a part of my day. When he was absent, many people noticed it, and I felt a little bit empty.
The first few times, I didn’t say hello back to him when he greeted me. I was 3 in my own world. On Monday the security guard asked me:“How was your weekend?” I told him about my visit to California, to see my mother, who had colon cancer. I 4 how I visited her each month. “The time with my mother is so precious(珍贵的), 5 I know that each time may be the last.”
He listened like a close friend I’d known for years. He felt my 6 and my love. He shared how he had lost his father to cancer two years before. He said, “I understand what you are going through. My father passed away while I was serving in Germany. Because of some reasons I was unable to fly back in time. I was unable to say goodbye to him. I wish I could have been with him, given him a hug, and told him I loved him. You are really lucky to have the gift of 7 .”
As I walked away, I realized I did not even know his name. The following day, on my way to work, I said: “After we spent all that time 8 yesterday, I still don’t know your name.” He answered, “Gary.” I responded back, “I’m Deborah.”
After that, we talked and shared stories about our weekends, dreams and families.
Later, Gary got 9 a new job and moved away. It’s been several years since I last spoke to him, yet the memory feels like yesterday. Gary reached out to me, 10 me and made my morning the best part of the day. I experienced the beauty of friendship and love.
In the business of life, we often forget to wish a stranger hello although how easy it is, and how great and lasting a 11 it can make. When you say hello to a stranger you become like a pebble(鹅卵石) thrown into a pond. With each ripple (波纹)you create, you spread love that continues to 12 . Make a point of saying hello to a stranger today. You will give the gift that keeps on giving.

Last August we were on vacation at Diana's Baths,a place famous for waterfalls.
Sitting on the rocks with my husband,I watched some parents(1) guarding their kids away from the rocks' edges.I felt glad that our 8﹣year﹣old son Wyatt could
(2) himself.Don't get me wrong:I still felt(3) as I saw my boy jump between the rocks."No running,"I said from time to time. "Stay away from the edges.""But I soon(4) ,and we were all having fun in the water.
(5) ,I saw Wyatt sit down between two rocks in the running water.I shouted at him to get out.He shouted back something and then he (6) over the edge.
"Somebody help my son!"I (7) ,over and over. But I only heard a woman scream."That (8) just went over the waterfall!"she shouted at her husband."We are leaving!"They walked away, not even looking back to see whether our child was OK.
By the time (9) climbed down to the rocks below,my husband had pulled Wyatt out of the water with the help of a young woman. She was (10) first aid."I'm Lisa,a nurse.I'm not leaving you." She looked at me (11) ,as if she were trying to take every bit of energy,(12) and strength(力量)in her body and pass it on to me.I held on to that energy like a rope that could pull us to(13) .
Wyatt was taken to the hospital immediately.(14) we spent a sleepless night there,we were told Wyatt was going to be OK.
Meeting Lisa has reminded(提醒)me how we need (15) from people we don't know.I know we are two strangers who are less strange.

Love, joy and the warm feeling of getting together don't cost a thing. But gifts do cost money. So what's a poor family to do?
Before New Year,I told my mother that the only thing I(1) was a pogo stick(弹簧单高跷).However,my mother said they were so expensive that we couldn't(2) one.
On a Saturday before New Year,my family(3) together. While my mother and I were picking out the gifts,my dad said, "I'll be back soon— I need to see something in the tool area. "A little later,he came back with a long box.I remember wondering if there was a(4) in it.
When we arrived home,my dad put the box in the garage. While my parents were busy with their chores,I(5) walked out to the garage and found the box.I was so(6) and I knew as soon as I opened that magical box,my bright, shiny pogo stick would appear. No such(7) !Inside the box was a(8) old broom(扫帚).
That New Year morning,I got some nice gifts(9) I didn't get the present that I really wanted.
After cleaning up the room,my dad went to the garage. When he came back in,he was(10) a beautiful pogo stick.I couldn't(11) it!My parents probably got quite a laugh from the trick they played on(12) .
Although we didn't have much(13) ,my parents gave me the most important gift of all:lots of(14) .That was over 60 years ago and I still think about those
(15) memories.I will never forget all the joy my parents brought into my life.

Something that I learnt from both my parents was the importance of having respect(尊重)for other people.I remember one day when we were travelling on a bus and
(1) sat down while other people were standing. My mother shouted at me, "
(2) immediately! You have young legs and you don't need to sit down. "At the time I felt embarrassed about being told of(3) ,but now I understand.I think children nowadays have(4) that respect and it really makes me angry if I see children sitting down while(5) people are standing.
One area in which we had a lot of rules was table(6) .For example,we weren't allowed to start our meal(7) the oldest person had started. We had to say "thank you" when our food was(8) ,and eat everything on our plates before we could(9) the table. We couldn't make any noise when eating.Worse than that,we were only(10) to have sweets at the weekend,as a special(11) if we had been good.
Although my upbringing(养育)was perhaps a bit(12) compared with modern children,I'm very thankful to my parents for giving me a clear(13) in life.Even though I was sometimes(14) ,I think it has made me a better person. In my view, children need clear rules, but more than that they need to learn how to get on with(15) people and realize they are not the center of the world.

When I was young,I was very proud.I liked to show off (炫耀)in front of others to earn their praise. But after one (1) experience,I came to understand that it's important to be modest (谦虚).
One day,my friend and I were riding our bikes in a park.My mother knew I had just learned how to ride for a short time,(2) she asked me to wear some safety equipment (装备)."No,I won't wear(3) !" 1 said, pointing at my friend's elbows and knees,"She doesn't wear it (4) !" "It's dangerous," my friend said, "You need more practice." "I might have learned later than you,but I can ride even(5) ! "I said loudly. She narrowed her eyes and said, "Let's wait and see!"
I saw a path leading into some woods."I'll race you!" I shouted. Then we rode towards the woods .(6) ,the path wasn't as smooth as I thought.I kept bumping (颠簸)up and down, and then suddenly..bam!I fell (7) my bike.I(8) my elbows and knees bleeding. "Ha﹣ha!" My friend made a face and helped me up."Be more careful next time," she said.Tears ran down my(9) . "Sorry," I said.
All in all, this experience made me realize that we must be(10) .A fall into a pit,a gain in my wit.
