I believe listening is powerful medicine. Studies have shown it takes a ___36___ about 18 seconds to interrupt a patient after he begins talking.
It was a Sunday. I had one last patient to see. I ___37___ her room in a hurry and stood at the doorway. She was an old woman, sitting at the edge of the bed, ___38___ to put socks on her swollen(肿胀)feet. I crossed the threshold(门槛), spoke quickly to the nurse, and scanned her chart noting she was in stable condition. I was almost in the clear.
I ___39___ on the bedrail(床的栏杆)looking down at her. She asked if I could help put on her socks. Instead, I launched into a monologue(独白) that went ___40___ like this, “How are you feeling? Your sugars and blood pressure were high ___41___ they’re better today. The nurse mentioned you’re ___42___ to see your son who’s visiting you today. It’s nice to have family visit from far away. I bet you really look forward to seeing him.”
She ___43___ me with a serious, authoritative voice. “Sit down, doctor. This is my story, not your story.”
I was surprised and embarrassed. I sat down. I helped her with the socks. She began to tell me that her only son lived ___44___ from her, but she had not seen him in five years. She believed that the stress of this ___45___ greatly to her health problems. After hearing her story and putting on her socks, I asked if there was anything else I could do for her. She ___46___ her head no and smiled. All she wanted me to do was to listen.
Each story is different. Some are detailed; others are vague. Some have a beginning, middle and end; others wander ___47___ a clear conclusion. Some are true; others not. Yet all those things do not really matter. What matters to the storyteller is that the story is heard without ___48___, assumption or judgment.
Listening to someone’s story costs ___49___ expensive diagnostic testing but is key to healing and diagnosis.
I often thought of ___50___ that woman taught me, and I ___51___ myself of the importance of stopping, sitting down and truly listening. And, not long after, in a(n) ___52___ twist, I became the patient, with a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis(多发性硬化症) at age 31. Now, 20 years later, I sit all the time in a wheelchair.
For ___53___ I could, I continued to see patients from my chair, but I had to resign when my hands were affected. I still teach medical students and other health care professionals, but now from the perspective(角度) of physician and patient.
I tell them I ___54___ the power of listening. I tell them I know firsthand that immeasurable healing ___55___ within me when someone stops, sits down and listens to my story.

Dash of Hope
"Dash" is a symbol which represents every day we've spent alive on earth. Therefore, how you spend your "dash" is important.
Recently I 36 about a little girl named Hope. After learning more about her life, I couldn't help but feel it was not by 37 , nor happenstance(意外事件), that she had been named "Hope". Hope was a twelve-year-old girl who was 40a "wish" in early December 2010 by the "Make-A-Wish" Foundation after being 41 that she had a rare type of bone cancer. However, when she found out that more than 150 42in her area were waiting for their wishes to be achieved , she unselfishly used her wish to 43 that those children have their wishes granted. She also asked that it be done 44 January 16, 2011. Unfortunately, however, the organization informed her that her 45 request could not be granted as the funds were simply 46 . They calculated that they would need to raise more than one 47 dollars in thirty days in order to grant her wish.48 , but not discouraged, she turned her disappointment into an enthusiasm that inspired caring 49 to take up helping grant the wishes of the other children, and eventually 50 as well. Newspaper columnists and reporters for radio and TV stations 51 the story of this caring young girl who had 52 the hearts of so many and as word spread, the community was challenged. Committees were fanned and schools, corporations and various organizations assisted in53 money to help make Hope's dream come true.
Her efforts were not in vain as they continue to help others, not only 54 , but spiritually and emotionally as well. At the gathering to celebrate her life, "A Celebration of Hope" on January 16, 2011 , the 55 was made that they had indeed received donations totaling more than one million dollars. Lulu is a brave pet in our shelter. As you know, there are a lot of forest fires during the summer season. Many forests are badly damaged by fire each year. Not far from our shelter, a forest caught fire during this hot summer. We were in a heat wave which had been 31 for three days.
Lulu rushed towards the forest where flames sent out a terrible 32 .I no longer had any hope that Lulu would come back to the shelter. In fact, I was waiting for the firemen to announce his 33 in the forest, when suddenly, a fireman burst into my shelter and informed me that my dog Lulu had 34 to save four kittens(小猫) who were trapped by the flames.According to the fireman, Lulu seized the kittens, one by one moving them to a safe place.I immediately accompanied(陪同) the fireman to the forest to 35 the rescued kittens. When we arrived 36 the scene of the incident, we found Lulu was not there. Then we heard the 37 of a dog from the forest barking furiously (猛烈地). I recognized it was my dog Lulu. The fireman followed the tracks of the dog until we found him barking 38 by the side of an injured fireman who was lying on the ground and desperately(绝望地) waiting for rescue. Thanks to Lulu, four kittens and a fireman were saved.
That day, I was very proud of Lulu for his two heroic(英雄的)39 toward the kittens and the fireman.Lulu showed much compassion (同情) for both animals like him and for a human being who was trying to 40 the fire with his colleagues(同事).
This true story of genuine(真的) love and compassion shows us that pets are loving, caring and considerate(考虑周到的).We should love and protect them. One day they could do us a good turn.

What on earth does happiness mean? I can’t give you its exact definition, but I’m sure if you love and help 16., you’ll get it.
I’ll never forget an old lady. She lives in 17.small house alone. It is said that her husband and her son 18.(die)in a road accident years ago. Her life is bitter, but she often helps others 19 .a smile. Whenever it snows, she is always the first to clean the paths. She looks after several children living nearby. I am one of them. I often remember the stories she told us and her kind smile. Perhaps she is unlucky, but I think she is a happy person. Her life is full of 20.(laugh)and love.
But I’m sad to see some people getting their happiness in bad ways. They talk 21.(noisy)in cinemas and meeting rooms; they destroy trees to enjoy themselves and they laugh at others’ shortcomings. Perhaps they feel happy at that time, 22.they will never get true happiness because they 23.(lose)their personality already.
Now I know what happiness is. 24.means kindness, love and unselfishness. Above all, I have come to understand that 25.(bring)happiness to others is getting ourselves happiness.
