For years I wanted a garden.I’d spend hours thinking of different things I could plant that would look nice together.
But then we had Matthew, and Marvin, and the twins Alisa and Alan, and then Helen.I was too busy raising them to grow a garden.
Money was not enough.Neither was time.Often when my children were little,
one of them would want something that cost too much, and I’d have to say, “Do you see a money tree outside? Money doesn't grow on trees, you know.”
Finally, all the children got through high school and college and were off on their own.I started thinking again about a garden.
Then, one spring morning, on Mother’s Day, I was working in my kitchen.Suddenly, I looked out of the window and there was a new tree, planted right in my yard. There were things blowing around on it. Then I put my glasses on—and I couldn’t believe what I saw.
There was a money tree in my yard!
I went outside to look.It was true! There were dollar bills(帐单), one hundred of them, hanging all over that tree. There was also a note among them, “Thank you for your time, Mom.We love you!”
Later, my children bought me tools, ornaments, a sunflower stepping stone and gardening books.A new page started in my life.
That was three years ago.My garden’s now very pretty, just like I wanted. When I go out and take care of my flowers, I don’t seem to miss my children as much as I once did.It feels like they’re right there with me.Now every year when winter comes, I look out of my window and think of the flowers I’ll see next spring in my little garden.I think about what my children did for me, and I get tears in my eyes—every time.

Lightning is one of the most beautiful natural phenomena (现象). It is also one of the most deadly phenomena. A bolt of lightning is six times hotter than the surface (表面) of the sun and gives out 30, 000 amps of electricity (电). It can travel at 100, 000 kilometers per hour and has the ability to hit a target up to 40 kilometers away. About 1,000 people around the world are killed by lightning every year.
Only about ten percent of people struck (击中) by lightning will actually die, but the others are actually very badly injured (受伤), with burns, broken bones, blindness, deafness, paralysis, or memory loss. However, when the electricity passes through their brains (大脑), it can occasionally have unusual and even positive effects (积极作用). Some blind (瞎的) people have got their sight back after being struck by lightning. One woman said a psychological test showed her intelligence (智力) had greatly improved (提高) and one man said he could no longer feel cold at all and could go out in temperature below zero in just a T-shirt!
So what should you do to stay safe in a thunderstorm? The most important rule is to stay inside, but do not go near phones, electrical appliances, plumbing or water. If you are struck outside, do not take shelter under a tree. Instead, roll (卷) yourself up into a ball on the ground as small as possible. And do not think it has to be raining in order for lightning to strike.
Strangely, lightning seems to prefer (偏爱) some people to others. If you are a man, you are more likely to be struck by lightning than a woman!

Very few people enjoy exams. I don’t, either. And although I tell myself not to worry about them, I always do! So I am not surprised that my students worry about them, too, even though they usually don’t need to. Because they are afraid of failing. However, since it is hard not to worry at all, we all must try not to worry too much. Why? Because worrying makes exams worse! How to do this?
Ask the teacher about how to revise and about exam skills---- how to work when you are in the exam.
Good students don’t wait until the week before an exam. They study all through the year. It is not possible to learn everything at the last minute. So don’t leave it till then!
If you start planning and working for each exam early and you make sure that you understand what you are studying , then, when it is over, you’ll be able to say, “What a good exam that was!”
Take a short rest during your time of work and revision(复习). If your mind is tired, it will not remember well. Work at the time when you know you will work at your best.
If you are studying in the evening, don’t go straight to bed afterwards. Your mind will still be “going round and round”----thinking that will relax you, and make you think of other things.
If you feel bad, talk to someone about your worries. But don’t be too relaxed! Some stress over exams makes you work hard for them. Why are the students afraid of exams according to the passage?
