One day, Nancy came home from school crying. Taking her in her arms, Mummy tried to 36 her. After a while, she stopped crying and asked, “Mummy, am I 37 ?” “No, you are not,” said Mummy, “but let us discuss this after you 38 , OK?”
Several minutes later, Nancy began to have supper with Mummy.
“Who 39 that you are bad?” asked Mummy.
“Phillips, my friend. He asked me for help with his maths but I 40 because I wanted to read the new book Daddy gave me. He got 41 and said I was a bad girl,” said Nancy.
“You are 42 ,” said Mummy. “Phillips has often helped you with your English. You should have helped him. Why don’t you phone him and say 43 to him?”
“But he called me bad and 44 with me. I don’t want to go,” Nancy cried.
“Though you have done 45 bad, it does not make you a bad person. You are 46 a good person.”
Nancy showed a 47 look on her face. “How can that be, Mummy?” she asked.
“Our 48 is always good. So never believe that you are bad,” Mummy replied with a smile.
49 flooded on Nancy’s face. “Am I 50 good, Mummy?” she asked.
“Yes, you are good, and always will be so. But that does not mean that you should not 51 the wrong that you do. You will have to call and 52 to Phillips. Do you understand me?”
“Yes, Mummy,” said Nancy slowly. “Thank you for telling me this. I feel much better now,” said Nancy 53 . “I am going to 54 Phillips right away, and I am never going to 55 that I am always good.”

Although I had left school against the advice of my teachers, I had, without telling anyone, tried to 36 my studies in literature at evening classes. It was a tiresome 37 from one end of the city to another and to 38 among adults was uninteresting. I was the youngest in the 39 , so the friendship I knew at school was 40 . I put up with it for a short period. It was 41 long a walk on cold winter’s nights and it was hard to put my 42 into Shakespeare with wet shoes and trousers. So I continued writing poetry at home.
By chance, I 43 some prizes and awards for literature. A young woman from a 44 company came to the college one day. She told me that I won a national poetry award. I 45 at her in astonishment (吃惊) and disbelief. She wanted to make a short 46 about me, to which I said, “No, I couldn’t do that.” Not that I had any real 47 . I was just frightened. In the end she 48 me that I should do it the following day.
So I did. They made a short film of me reading one of my 49 and I became 50 interested in literature than ever. I 51 what I should do after this, and decided some weeks later that I could not 52 myself spending the rest of my days dealing with machines. So one evening, I hesitatingly (犹豫地) told my parents that I wanted to 53 to school. They were greatly surprised and a little afraid, but they did not try to persuade me not to. They wanted to know if I was 54 , and if I knew what it meant and 55 I realized that if I gave up my job training, it would be very difficult to get a good job. But nothing could stop me, and they asked about the matter no further.

During the last fifteen years of my mother's life she suffered with Alzheimer's disease. Until then she had been a bright, __51__ woman deeply interested and involved in the world around her. I would go home to visit her in Virginia and she would look at me in a(an) __52__ way and ask, "Who are you?" I would answer, "I'm your son." "Where do you live?" She would ask. "In California," I would tell her. "Isn't that interesting," she would say, "I have a son in California."
She seemed __53__ forgetful and confused at the beginning of the disease, __54__ later on she would go __55__periods of intense anxiety. She would pace through the house she had lived in most of her life __56__ uneasily that she wanted to go home. Or she would leave home and wander away if she were __57__ for a short time.
Hoping to please her and put her mind __58__ I would take her for a drive, visiting sites where she had lived as a __59__. In the yard of the hillside house in Shipman I sat in the car and admired the view of the old oaks and long green lawn. I __60__ my mother there as a little girl playing with the pet lamb she had been so fond of. I looked to her for some __61__. She shook her head and said, "I want to go home." Over the years I have decided that what my mother was calling home was not a __62__, but a time. I suspect it was a time when she was much __63__, when her children were still underfoot, when her husband was still vigorous and attentive.
Watching my mother's suffering set me wondering __64__ I would have in mind if someday I couldn't find __65__ and wanted to go there. In this family we tend to be long-lived and we grow fuzzy (糊涂的) minded as the years go by. At eighty I have already noticed some __66__ symptoms. My doctor says the forgetfulness is only __67__ and that it comes with age. Still the fear of Alzheimer's is haunting there. Someday __68__ and when I become even more __69__ minded than I am now, unable to drive and unable to tell you where "home" is, my dear son, I expect I will ask you to take me home, I know you will do your best to find the place I need to be. I leave these notes for your __70__.

My husband and I insisted that our children were old enough to clean their rooms and make their beds. But they thought 11 . My complaints, even self-justified(自有道理) 12 , were always landing on 13 ears. Very often a whole hour’s scolding would end up with their 14 into tears. I felt very frustrated. I realized I needed to 15 my method of “mothering”.
One day when they were at school, I spent some time tidying their rooms. On their desks, in plain 16 , I left the cards: “Dear Bill(the other card was 17 to Sarah), your room was messy this morning and I’m sure you like it clean. Love, the Room Fairy.” 18 arriving back, the children were 19 excited to receive the little note from the Room Fairy. The next day, their rooms were fairly tidy. Sure enough, there was another note from the Room Fairy 20
for them, thanking them for their nice “gift” of a clean room and 21 asking them to play a certain violin 22 . Each day, thank-you notes would be written differently to keep the ideas 23 .
Sometimes the Room Fairy would propose a little 24 : “If you can finish your homework and go over your lessons before dinner, I’d like to watch a particular television program with you tonight.” Sometimes some colored markers or other little items would be left in 25 of well-done jobs the day 26 .
27 I can’t remember how long “the Room Fairy” continued leaving her love notes. When they were age appropriate, we used various versions of Post-Its (贴条). The bathroom mirror became the 28 centre of our home. Appointments, notices about visiting relatives, lesson schedules, and changes in plans could be 29 .
We all benefited from and 30 the idea of sharing reminders and daily details of life through notes. I believe the true advantage of the Room Fairy notes survives in our frequent and enjoyable communication.
