The telephone rang in the police station at Richmond, California, US. “ 1 station? A train for Santa Fe collided (相撞) a 2 at the McDonald Street Crossing. Please come here at once. With an ambulance(救护车),too. A man is badly wounded,” said a(n) 3 voice of a young woman.
“OK. We’ll come soon. Please stay there and wait.” Replied the policeman.
Within a minute, a police car and an ambulance 4 off. Soon they got to the crossing, but only to find everything was 5 . No collision, no wounded man.
“What a dirty 6 !” said the policeman angrily. “ We must find out that mischievous (恶作剧) 7
and…”
They had not been able to say anything about a 8 when they heard the whistle of a train was nearing them quickly. All of a sudden, a truck appeared. It came 9 towards them, too. When it was passing the crossing, it suddenly 10 to move on. Right then and there, before the eyes of all the people present, the train collided with the truck heavily and struck it dozens of metres away.
When Randolph Bruce, the driver , was helped out of the damaged truck, he was badly wounded just as the young woman had foretold (预言) on the phone. As he was taken to hospital in time, he was 11 at last. Later the police did whatever they could to 12 the woman who had 13 them, but failed.
It is really 14 that a prophecy(预言) should agree with the fact so 15 .

Nowadays air pollution is something that is hardly questioned any more. However, I still can’t walk down the street in any of the big cities without 33 that people are 34 the air pollution. It is time for the government departments of the world to introduce emission(废气排放) controls on all cars and 35 the public transport system(公共交通体系) to encourage people to 36 their cars at home. A friend of mine takes flying lesson each morning and it really makes him 37 when he climbs above the smog layer(烟雾) and looks down 38 it and thinks: “I’m breathing that!” this kind of 39 results from the bad management of resources. Many of us spend a great deal of time and energy trying to prove that we are right and others are wrong. Many people 21 that it’s their job to show others how their positions, statements, and points of view are 22 , and that on doing so, the person they are correcting is going to somehow _23 it, or at least learn something. Wrong!
Think about it. Have you ever been _24 by someone and said to him, “Thank you so much for showing me that I’m wrong and you’re right”? Or, has anyone you know ever 25 you when you corrected them, or made yourself “right” at their 26 ? Of course not. The truth is, all of us 27 to be corrected. A wonderful way for becoming more peaceful and loving is to practice 33 others the joy of being right ---give them the glory. 34 correcting. When someone says, “ I really feel it’s important to …”, rather than breaking 35 and saying, “No, it’s more important to…”, simply let it go and allow their statement to 36 . The people in your life will become less defensive and more 37 . They will appreciate you more than you could ever have 38 . You’ll discover the joy of joining in and witnessing other people’s 39 , which is far more rewarding than a battle of egos( 自我 ). Starting today, let others be “ 40 ” , most of the time.

In the depths of my memory, many things I did with my father still live. These things have come to represent, in fact, what I call 26 and love.
I don’t remember my father ever getting into a swimming pool. But he did 27 the water. Any kind of 28 ride seemed to give pleasure. 29 he loved to fish; sometimes he took me along.
But I never really liked being on the water the way my father did. I liked being 30 the water, moving through it, 31 it all around me. I was not a strong 32 , or one who learned to swim early, for I had my 33 . but I loved being in the swimming pool close to my father’s office and 34 those summer days with my father, who 35 come by on a break. I needed him to see what I could do. My father would stand there in his suit, the 36 person not in swimsuit.
After swimming, I would go 37 his office and sit on the wooden chair in front of his big desk, where he let me 38 anything I found in his top desk drawer. Sometimes, if I was left alone at his desk 39 he worked in the lab, an assistant or a student might come in and tell me perhaps I shouldn’t be playing with his 40 . but my father always 41 and said easily, “Oh, no, it’s 42 .” Sometimes he handed me coins and told me to get 43 an ice cream…
A poet once said, “We look at life once, in childhood; the rest is 44 .” and I think it is not only what we “look at once, in childhood” that determines our memories, but 45 , in that childhood, looks at us.
