The Dark Age of GreeceAmong early civilizations, we call the low points "dark ages", because civilizations often dropped to such a low level that it is hard to get an accurate picture of their history during these periods. During a dark age, a civilization may not have produced monuments, statue, or other objects which we use to learn about early civilizations.
One' of the most important dark ages was the dark age of Greece, which lasted from about 1100 BC to 900 BC. Prior to-that-time,Greece had a highly advanced society called the Mycenaean civilization. The Mycenaeans were a trading civilizationIn fact, the Mycenaean civilization was so important that when it collapsed in the 12th centuryBC,most other civilizations in the region collapsed as well. The next 200 years are like a blank page to historians and we know very little about this period.
The collapse of the Mycenaeans brought an end to writing in the area, and thus an end to the written records historians rely on.
The little that we know about this period has been learned from archaeology. It seems that civilization became much less advanced. The pottery from this period is much simpler and less artistic. This suggests that there was lack of wealthy people to buy higher quality products. This would suggest a large decrease in population, possibly due to a widespread lack of food and consequent starvation.
Sometime around 800 BC, the Greeks began to emerge from this dark age, most probably due to the influence of other civilizations. They had lost their early writing system, but began to use the writing system of the Phoenicians at this time.Over the next 300 years, their civilization continued to rise, and their dark age was forgotten.
A.Many civilizations undergo a series of high points and low points during their history. |
B.Many early civilizations underwent dark ages, but Greece never recovered from its dark age. |
C.They began constructing larger cities and trading with their neighbors again. |
D.Another interesting point is that most of the large cities of earlier time periods appear to have been abandoned in favor of much smaller settlements. |
E.Many pieces of evidence suggest that there was a huge increase in population during the dark age of Greece.
F.and they did much to spread their culture across the eastern Mediterranean.
G.One major reason for this is that writing basically stopped.
Some time ago I discovered that one of my chairs had a broken leg. I didn’t think there would be any difficulty in getting it mended, as there are a whole lot of antique(古董) shops near my home. So I left home one morning carrying the chair with me. I went into the first shop expecting a friendly reception. I was quite wrong. The man wouldn’t even look at my chair.
The second shop, though slightly more polite, was just the same, and the third and the fourth, so I decided that my approach must be wrong, and I should try another way.
I entered the fifth shop with a plan in my mind. I placed the chair on the floor and said to the shopkeeper,” “Would you like to buy a chair?” He looked it over carefully and said, “Yes, not a bad chair. How much do you want for it, sir?” “Twenty pounds,” I said. “OK,” he said, “I’ll give you twenty pounds.” “It’s got a slightly broken leg,” I said. “Yes, I saw that, it’s nothing.”
Everything was going according to plan and I was getting excited. “What will you do with it?” I asked. “Oh, it will be easy to sell once the repair is done.” “I’ll buy it,” I said. “What do you mean? You’ve just sold it to me,” he said. “Yes, I know but I’ve changed my mind. I am sorry. I’ll give you twenty-seven pounds for it.” “ You must be crazy,” he said. Then, suddenly the penny dropped. “I know what you want. You want me to repair your chair.” “You’re right,” I said. “And what would you have done if I had walked in and said, “Would you mend this chair for me?” “I wouldn’t have agreed to do it,” he said. “We don’t do repairs, not enough money in it and too much trouble. But I’ll mend this for you, shall we say for a fiver(五英镑钞票)?” He was a very nice man and was greatly amused by the whole thing. We can learn from the text that in the first shop the writer _________.
A.was rather impolite |
B.was warmly received |

D.asked the shopkeeper to repair his chair |

What is a big dream? Or, is a big dream something that provides only entertainment? Children dream big dreams, but there are three barriers to realizing dreams. They often kill them before they ever have a chance to grow.
The Self
Immediately following the birth of a big dream, a negative self-talk takes over and gives all the reasons why it cannot happen. This inside voice is the ego(自我). It’s there for protecting and should be listened to. Most people are influenced by the inside voice. That’s why only a handful of people make their dream come true.
Family and friends are a lot like the ego. They want to protect those they love, so they will often list all the reasons why the big dreams won’t come true. Sometimes, family and friends destroy dreams of those they love most, out of their own fear of being left behind.
The World
If one gets past the first two barriers, one has to face the world. In the past, big dreamers were locked up and sometimes even killed when they were shown to the world. Fortunately, in most of the world today, big dreamers just get laughed at.
The way to realize a big dream is with confidence and action. When children have confidence and then take action, they will be ready to accept any failure. The truth is that every great dreamer whose dreams have never seen the light of success knows failure well.
A.How Big Dreams Die |
B.Family and Friends |
C.Sometimes it is right, but more often it is wrong. |
D.Does a big dream show one’s future? |
E. It is the last and the most terrible barrier.
F. And their big dream is to be a rock star or a famous artist.
G. They simply fail until they succeed.

Any car accident is frightening, but an accident in which your vehicle is thrown into the water, with you trapped inside, is absolutely terrifying. However, most deaths result from panic, without a plan or understanding what is happening to the car in the water. By adopting a brace(支撑) position, acting decisively and getting out fast, you can save yourself from a sinking vehicle.
Brace yourself for impact (撞击力). As soon as you're aware that you're going off the road and into a body of water, adopt a brace position. The impact could set off the airbag system in your vehicle, so you should place both hands on the steering wheel in the "ten and two" position.
Undo your seatbelt. Unbuckle the children, starting with the oldest first. Forget the cell phone call. Your car isn't going to wait for you to make the call.
Leave the door alone at this stage and concentrate on the window. A car's electrical system should work for up to three minutes in water, so try the method of opening it electronically first. Many people don't think about the window as an escape option either because of panic or misinformation about doors and sinking.
Break the window. If you aren't able to open the window, or it only opens halfway, you'll need to break it with an object or your foot. It may feel counter-intuitive (有悖常理的) to let water into the car.
Escape when the car has equalized. If it has reached the dramatic stage where the car cabin has been filled with water and it has become balanced, you must move quickly and effectively to ensure your survival. While there is still air in the car, take slow, deep breaths and focus on what you're doing.
A.Open the window as soon as you hit the water. |
B.Surviving a sinking car is not as difficult as you think. |
C.It takes 60 to 120 seconds for a car to fill up with water usually. |
D.Such accidents are particularly dangerous to the risk of drowning. |
E.In conclusion, if you know what to do in the water, you will be safe.
F.This is the first thing to attend to, yet it often gets forgotten in the panic.
G.But the sooner the window is open, the sooner you can escape directly through it.
