Statistically, air travel is by far the safest way to travel, and you can make flying even safer, just by following these simple rules. As your chances of being involved in an air accident are practically nil (零), many of these tips concern what you should and shouldn't do to make your journey safer when you are airborne (升空的).
Fly on non-stop routes
Most accidents occur during the takeoff, climb, descent and landing phases of a flight, so flying non-stop reduces your exposure to these complex procedures.
Choose larger aircraft.
Although small aircrafts have very good safety records, those with more than 30 passenger seats are designed to comply (遵守) with much stricter regulations and are tested more regularly to make sure they still comply. Also, in the unlikely event of a serious accident, larger aircraft provide a better opportunity for passenger survival.
Pay attention to the pre-flight safety briefing
The information may seem repetitious (重复的), but it's worth listening to the flight attendants. And even if you've flown before, it doesn't mean you know everything about the aircraft you're on, such as the location of the closest emergency exit.
Store things safely
Never put very heavy articles in the overhead storage bins. They may fall out when someone opens the bin and cause injury. Also, the bin may not be able to hold heavier objects during turbulence (气流).
Keep our seat belt fastened while you are seated
Cabin crew always tell you this, but it's important. You would be seriously injured if the plane hits unexpected turbulence. Always fasten your seat belt if you are told to. The general rule of flying is this: If you are told to do something, do it first and ask questions later.
Let the flight attendant pour your hot drinks
Flight attendants are trained to handle hot drinks like coffee or tea in a crowded aisle on a moving aircraft, so allow them to pour the drink and hand it to you. Never ask to take a coffee pot from one of them. What is the overall reason for these air safety tips?
A.What to do in the event of a crash. | B.How to avoid turbulence. |
C.How to improve safety while you are flying. | D.How to avoid injury. |
The underlined word "those" in the second tip refers to _______.
A.smaller planes | B.passengers | C.larger aircraft | D.safety records |
The underlined phrase "The general rule" in the fifth tip refers to _______.
A.anything the flight staff tell you to do | B.general safety advice |
C.walking around the plane | D.pouring hot drinks |
Which of the following is NOT true?
A.Larger planes have more safety checks and are safer in an accident. |
B.Take-offs are safer on non-stop flights than landings. |
C.Every aircraft is different, so the safety procedures may be different. |
D.Seat belts should be worn to protect against turbulence. |
The best title of the passage should be _______.
A.The Safest Way to Travel | B.Air Safety Tips |
C.Non-stop Routes | D.How to Fly a Plane |

ON March 17 there will be an explosion of green across the World in celebration of St Patrick’s Day.The Irish traditionally wear green on this day, as the color is associated with Ireland.
But there are others, non-Irish,who use the occasion to make jokes about the Irish. They use the stereotype(成见)of the Irish as hot-tempered(脾气暴躁的)drinkers,who love to fight and will do anything to avoid a day's work.
However, today the Irish are more often admired for their musical talent and many other abilities. It’s no accident that many of today's most popular music groups, such as singer Enya and rock band U2,are Irish born and bred.Lonely Planet readers even ranked Ireland in 2007 as the friendliest country in the world.
So where did the negative Irish stereotype come from? From the 19th century when it was a bad time to be Irish.
Ireland then was poverty-stricken and starving. Many Irish moved to the United States to escape famine, but there they had to compete---occasionally with their fists for jobs and housing with other immigrant groups, such as the Italians. It was on the US’ streets that the Irish earned their reputation for street fighting.
The stereotype of the Irish as big drinkers may be unfair, but Ireland can boast(为……自豪) its fair share of famous drinks. It was the Irish after all who created one of the world’s best-loved beers,Guinness.

Telepathy: Mind-to-mind Contact
Telepathy is the ability to communicate without the use of the five senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste). It’s an instinct (本能) which can be woken up in times of emergency or need. When we feel that something is happening or about to happen by instinct, we’re using resources within the unconscious mind. When the resources of two persons’ unconscious minds link together into the same frequency, we call it Telepathy.
We can either send or receive Telepathy. If you know who is calling before you answer the ringing phone, you are probably a good receiver. If you think of a person and he/she calls you, you are most likely to be better at sending.
You can easily put your abilities to the test. Think of somebody and will him or her to contact you. Be patient. The other person may not be a good receiver, but they should contact you much earlier than would normally be expected. Or whenever the phones rings, but try “feeling” who is contacting you. Don’t guess, but try to feel it with your mind. However, if neither of these work for you, that doesn’t mean that you have no ability of telepathy. As mentioned earlier, telepathy is most likely to turn up in case of emergency.
Telepathy dreams often contain telepathic messages. Two people may both dream of the other and find that their dreams had a clear connection. These people are probably linking to each other’s unconscious mind.
Telepathy & Relationships. The more people spend time together, the more likely they are to be able to link up to the other’s mind, specially when separated. There are two reasons for this. One is that they understand the other’s mind through time spent together; the other is that there is usually a strong desire to communicate. A mother will often sense that her child is in danger. This is due to the child’s eagerly wanting his or her mother, knowing that this person who would always want to be there for them, and the mother’s deep desire to protect her child from harm.
64. Telepathy turns up when we ____.
A. sense a close friend in dangerB. use the five senses together
C. recall things from our memory D. think of a stranger
65. You’re better at sending than receiving Telepathy if you ____.
A. can feel your mom is in danger B. receive a friend’s call as you wish
C. can tell who knocks at your doorD. dream of a friend dreaming of you
66. Which is not the way to help people gain Telepathy?
A. Help them have a strong desire to communicate. B. Separate them all the time.
C. Help them link up their unconscious minds. D. Let them spend much time together.
