It’s hard to make friends if you stay at home alone all the time. Get out of the house and do things that will put you in touch with other people. It’s easier to make friends when you have the same interests.
Don’t be afraid to show people what you are really good at. Talk about the things you like and do best. People will be interested in you if there is something interesting about you.
Look at people in the eyes when you talk to them. That way, they will find it easier to talk to you. If don’t, people may think you are not interested in them and may stop being interested in you.
Listen carefully. Let people talk about themselves before talking about ‘me, me, me’. Ask lots of questions. Show interest in their answers.
Try to make friends with the kind of people you really like — not just with those who are easy to meet. Be friendly to a lot of people. If so, more people will choose to make friends with you.

Weather can influence (影响) people’s intelligence(智力). A report in 1983 showed that IQ of a group of students was very high when a very strong wind came, but after the strong wind, their IQ was 10% lower. That wind could help people have higher intelligence. Very hot weather, on the other hand, can make it lower. A recent report shows that students in many schools of the US often get low marks in exams in the hot months of the year( July and August).
Weather also has a strong influence on people’s feelings. Winter may be a bad time for thin people. They might feel unhappy during cold days. But fat people may have a hard time in hot summer.
Low air pressure (气压) may make people forgetful. People leave more bags on buses and in shops on low-pressure days. People feel best at a temperature of about 18°C.

Some birthday customs are quite similar in many parts of the world---- birthday candles(蜡烛), birthday games, and birthday cakes. But some customs are more specific to certain countries. Here are some children talking about their customs.
Linda: I am fourteen. I come from Aruba阿鲁巴岛(拉丁美洲)(荷属安的列斯群岛中的大岛). In our country, Children take something special to school for their classmates and all teachers. Each teacher gives the birthday child a small gift like a pencil, an eraser or a postcard. The birthday child is also allowed to wear special clothes instead of the school uniform.
Lucy: I am one year older than Linda. Denmark(丹麦)is my country. A flag is flown outside a window to show that someone who lives in that house is having a birthday. Presents are placed around the child's bed while they are sleeping so they will see them at once when they wake up.
Tom: I am as old as Linda. I am from Brazil. The birthday child receives a pull on the earlobe(耳垂) for each year in my country. The birthday person also gives the first slice of cake to his/her most special friend or relative, usually mom or dad.

My little brother sat in the corner of the living room, a pen in one hand and my father’s book in the other.
As my father walked into the room, my brother knew that he had done something wrong. I could see that he had scribbled (胡写乱画) in the book with a pen. Now, he and I both waited for our father’s punishment.
My father picked up his book and looked at it carefully. My father was a teacher. For him, books were very important, and yet he loved his children. Instead of punishing my brother, he took the pen from my brother’s hand, and then wrote in the book himself: John’s work, 1959, age 2. I’m very thankful to you for scribbling in my book.
“Wow,” I thought. “Is this punishment?”
The years and the books came and went. We always knew our parents loved us. From time to time we would open the book, look at the scribbles and read my father’s expression of love. My father taught us how important it is when our lives are touched by little hands. He also taught us about what is really important in life: people, not things.
Now I am a father too. Unlike my father, I don’t wait for my daughters to take books from my bookshelf and scribble in them. I take one down and give it to my children to scribble. As I look at their artwork (艺术作品), I think about my father and the lessons he taught me. What did the writer think when his father came into the room?
